1 Newsletter asalo Share the Good News Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Office of Christian Formation Diocese of Lubbock P.O. Box Lubbock, Tx (806) September/October 2010 This year the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has designated the Catechetical Theme as: Matrimony: Sacrament of Enduring Love. Matrimony: Sacrament of Enduring Love, is an appropriate way to reflect on and celebrate the proper role of parents as primary catechists of their children. We encourage parents and families to pray the Prayer for Family Commitment as a reminder of their calling to teach their children by word and example what it means to be the domestic Church. (Prayer can be found on the back page of this newsletter.) Therefore, all of us who have been entrusted to help parents through the Catechetical Ministry must also understand the Church s teaching on the Sacrament of Matrimony. This year s Annual Catechetical and Ministries Conference will focus on the same theme in order to help new and veteran Catechists, DRE s, Deacons, Priests, RCIA Teams, parish liturgy committee members, musicians, and all lay ministers to enrich themselves with the teachings of the Church regarding this Sacrament. You will find that all the breakout sessions will focus on God s enduring love not only in matrimony, but in every aspect of Christian life as we experience it in the family, the parish, the diocese, and the Universal Church. We look forward to seeing you at the Annual Catechetical and Ministries Conference which will include separate sessions for the youth of our parishes. The youth sessions will be lead by the National Evangelization Team. Mark your calendars October 23, 2010!!! Staff of the Office of Christian Formation

3 2010 Annual Catechetical and Ministries Conference Goals: When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them [a scholar of the law] tested him by asking, "Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?" He said to him, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments." Matthew 22:34-40 A Fruitful Love: To understand that we are all fruits of the generous love of Christ on the Cross. In such a way, the enduring love within the family requires the cooperation of all with the providential will of God. Thus every one of us is called to live a life of generosity and spiritual fruitfulness not only for ourselves, but for the good of others. A Generous Love: To examine the witnesss of families whose generosity to each other shows itself in their daily sacrifices and especially, in their ability to forgive one another. Thus they create a road to sanctity to travel upon together, since sanctity consists in our participation in the generous love of Christ Jesus. An Enduring Love: To show how the possibility of a faithful and enduring love within the marriage commitment reflects God s enduring love and is possible in today s world. This is a mission that the Lord confides in a particular way to married couples, a happiness that is lived in the midst of a faithful and freely generous marital commitment, which calls us all to remember our better aspirations, and invites those who are disheartened to have new hope! The following are resources available in the Office of Christian Formation Resource Library FAMILY VC-4.20 THE SACRAMENT OF PARENTHOOD (Paulist Press) VHS 30min Grace is everywhere. God s love is not limited to seven sacraments. Parents love for their children are tangible manifestations of God s love. VC-4.37 GATHERED IN MY NAME (ACTA Publications) VHS 10min. This video is an introduction to the spirituality of family life. Using real life video clips of many different families, the video explores the profound love that should be at the center of every Christian family. Ordinary family events, such as, meals, conversation, moments of intimacy and reconciliation are shown to be occasions of God's presence. Suggested uses: individual family use, parish and diocese for marriage preparation and marriage enrichment programs. The video gives an all inclusive view of family within the church community. VC-4.38 RAISING CHILDREN IN A VIOLENT WORLD (XXIII Pub.) VHS 33min. Kathleen O. 8 Family Commitment Prayer Dear God our Father, you have called all Christian families to be a sign of your love to the world. Help us to be generous with the gifts of life and love that you have showered on our family. May we share them so that our homes become true signs of unitive and fruitful love. Let us never forget to thank you each day for all that sustains us and to look to Christ, who comes to us in the events of family life, in the Sacraments of the Church, and in service to the poor. In all of this, our family becomes a living expression of your Church, a hallowed home of life and love. By the power of the Holy Spirit, may all of us spouses, parents, and children share, as members of his Body, in Jesus mission to build a civilization of love. Father, we ask this in Jesus name in union with the Holy Spirit. Amen. Catechist s Prayer Father of all families, you have called me to serve the family in truth and love as a catechist. May I be faithful to this call, rooted in your Word, and open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit. May I use these gifts, especially the gifts of faith, hope, and love, to serve the family as a witness to you, who are love and life and the source and destiny of all families. Let your Spirit enlighten my mind and strengthen my heart so that I can be a path of Christ s love to families, especially those in need, the homebound and aged, the disabled and disheartened. Through the intercession of Mary and Joseph, I pray for the Church, the Bride of Christ, whose mission to build a civilization of love passes through the family. Amen.
