Believe Being a Christian is not a one-time event. While most of us can point to a time when we decided to follow Christ and prayed to turn our lives over to Him, the life of a Christ-follower is very much a process of becoming more like Him. We were created by God in His own image to have a love relationship with Him. Unfortunately sin entered the world through humankind s disobedience and sin remains a barrier in each one of our lives. The trouble is that your sins have cut you off from God says Isaiah 59:2. The good news (gospel) is that God Himself, in the form of His Son Jesus Christ, came to earth to die for each one of us whom He loves, to pay the price for our sins on the cross. Romans 6:23 says the wages or result of sin is death but the free gift of God is everlasting life in Jesus our Lord. We can never earn our salvation; it is given to us by God s mercy and grace. The Bible calls on us to: 1. ADMIT we have sin in our lives, to repent and turn away from it and to ask Christ to forgive our sins. (Acts 3:19; Romans 3:23) 2. BELIEVE the Jesus died for our sins on the cross, rose from the dead and is alive today. (John 3:16; Ephesians 2:8) 3. CONFESS with our mouth that Jesus is the Lord of our life, that means surrendering our life to His control (Romans 10:9) What is Baptism? Just as Jesus was baptized by being immersed in the Jordan River, we want to be obedient to God s Word. The Great Commission of Christ is set out in Matthew 28:19-20 where Jesus says: Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. It s clear that Jesus set the example for us to be baptized as believers in Him. By being baptized we are obeying Christ s command and we are identifying ourselves as being his disciple and follower. Baptism shows the world around us that we are surrendered to God and dedicate our lives to Him. Who can be baptized? Baptism is for anyone who has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It is for those who believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for their sins; that He has forgiven their sins and that Jesus alone can save them from their sins. John 3:16 states: For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. (NLT)
If you have asked forgiveness for your sins, believe that Jesus died for your sins and you have accepted Him as your Lord and Saviour, you are ready to be baptized. If you would like more information on having a personal relationship with Jesus, please call the Church office, , to speak with a Pastor. When Should You Be Baptized? There is no reason to delay being baptized. As soon as you have decided to receive Christ into your life and to follow Him, you can and should be baptized. An account from the early church in Acts 2:41 says Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church. The Bible commands us to be baptized as believers and we follow the example of Christ and the early church by being immersed in water. Baptism is obedience to God, a symbol of our death to our sins and being raised up into life in Christ, and a clear sign to the world of our dedication to God.
Belong First Alliance Church exists to build lives that honour God. We seek to do that by: Building lives that CONNECT. Every person must have a heart connection to God through Jesus Christ and a vital, growing connection with other believers through the church. Building lives that GROW. We are to grow spiritually and become more like Christ. Building lives that SERVE. God wants us to serve Him by serving people. We are all ministers and must use our gifts to reach out to others. Building lives that SHARE. God commands us to be fishers of men sharing the love of God and His saving message wherever we go. Building lives that HONOUR. Life is measured by our commitment to be focused on Jesus Christ in everything we do. We will strive to worship God in lives devoted to Him. Why be a member? The apostle Paul says that once you accept Christ into your life you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone in him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. (Ephesians 2:19-22) At First Alliance Church we believe that all who have been baptized as believers and who want to commit to the body of Christ should become members of the Church. We believe that our mandate as a body of believers can best be accomplished by people who want to identify with and be part of our local church body. The New Testament gives us numerous examples of local churches where the believers devoted themselves to serving each other and the world around them. Like the New Testament church, First Alliance is led by a group of Elders as described in the book of Titus.
Benefits of Membership 1. It is a sign of your commitment to the local church body. (Ephesians 2:19; Romans 12:5) 2. It strengthens your bond to the spiritual family for support and encouragement (Galatians 6:1-2, Hebrews 10:24-25) 3. It enables you to develop and use your spiritual gifs at all levels of the body (I Corinthians 12:4-27) 4. It places you under the spiritual protection and accountability of Godly leaders (Hebrews 13:17; Acts 20:28-29) 5. It gives you the right to vote for selection of leaders and direction of the local church. More and more key leadership roles in the church will be filled only by those willing to identify with and commit to the church as members. We believe that such a commitment is a mark of spiritual maturity. Responsibilities of Membership When we become part of something far greater than ourselves, it comes with the benefits of spiritual family to surround us and it also comes with some responsibilities. Christ says in John 15:5 that apart from Him we can do nothing; to be used by God as part of First Alliance Church we must be submitted daily to the Holy Spirit. Part of that submission is pursuing loving Christ-like relationships with those around us at home, work, church and the world-at-large. We are also expected to participate in our Church not as a spectator but freely giving of our time, talents and treasure. We, all of us, are the church and we must follow Christ s example of servanthood, serving God with our hands through volunteer service to the congregation, the community and the world. First Alliance Church is committed to helping you become a fully engaged, growing disciple of Jesus Christ. We will do all we can to promote your spiritual growth through ministries and resources to encourage building life processes, prayer, life groups, family life and opportunities for you to give, serve and go into the world to spread the good news of what Jesus Christ has done for us. As members we confirm that: we have received Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour we have been baptized as believers we will promote the unity within First Alliance Church by loving others and respecting leadership we will be accountable to attend and give to support our church we will discover, develop and use our spiritual gifts we will support our church by praying and sharing the gospel with others in our city, country and world As members we will also agree to First Alliance Church s statement of faith which summarizes our Biblical beliefs.
Partnership Through Giving A growing/maturing Christ-follower is learning to give... GENEROUSLY... They know Christ has given all to them, and they know Christ owns all they have anyway. PROPORTIONALLY... They try to give as high a percentage of their income as possible, recognizing the tithe (10%) as a long established benchmark which may well be exceeded as they prosper. REGULARLY... As resources flow in, they offer the first-fruits back to God, honouring Him before any others. LOCALLY... Knowing that they claim this church as their spiritual home, they support the ministries from which they derive benefit. LIBERALLY... As they are able, they go beyond giving to their own church and contribute to the cause of Christ globally. CHEERFULLY... Knowing that God sees the heart, they don t just give begrudgingly to an organization they give their offering as unto God Himself; they do so willingly, and not under compulsion, but with joyful worship as their resources flow out to serve others. ANONYMOUSLY... They don t call attention to themselves when they give or expect their offering to produce an advantage in the church. EXPECTANTLY... Counting on God s promise of provision, they anticipate seeing God use their gift and know He ll work in their own life including financially as they give. OUR STATEMENT on GOOD STEWARDSHIP Christ followers realize that they have been bought with the price of Christ s blood, and that everything they are and have belongs to Him. In light of this, they desire to be responsible caretakers of the material resources that God has entrusted to them. Being responsible includes being careful about what they spend on themselves, therefore, they submit this area to the Lord s direction also. They recognize the tithe (10% of one s earnings) as the historic standard of giving in Scripture. But moreover, in response to Christ s abundant giving, they increasingly submit their resources to His Lordship and display a spirit of generosity and cheerfulness in supporting the work of the church.
The Practical Side of Giving General Fund The day to day ministry of First Alliance Church is supported through our collective giving to the General Fund. Investment through giving on this front allows ministries to carry on aggressively, provides salary to our staff, and cares for he operating costs of our church campus. The cost of ministry through the ministry year will be just over $4 million dollars. Missions Fund Designating to the Missions Fund helps support 230 Canadian Alliance International Workers worldwide through our Global Advance support. It also helps support a number of First Alliance Church International Workers working with other organizations, as well as outreach organizations working in Calgary and across Canada. This fund helps support our denominational school Ambrose University College. Care Fund We are pleased to be able to help people in our church who find themselves in difficult situations. This can occur through unexpected job loss, relationship difficulties, or other family crisis. When this occurs, the church is able to help because people have designated a portion of their offering to the Care Fund. Capital Fund In 2005, FAC continued stepping out in faith, trusting God for provision in relocating and re-establishing a new church campus in SE Calgary. Our Power Of Everyone campaign was launched in the fall of 2008, and to date close to two million dollars has been given towards this 2 year campaign. These commitments plus the much needed giving of new partners will move us significantly forward in covering the costs of our relocation dream. The greater the partnership on this front the greater the impact in the years to come! Pre-authorized Giving Pre-authorized Bank Withdrawals are available to assist you with your stewardship. Simply pick up an Automated Donation Option Enrollment Form from the Information Desk in the foyer, fill it out, include a VOID cheque, and place it in the offering plate. If you have any questions about this program, call the church office.

The Journey To Today How did the Christian & Missionary Alliance Begin? The Alliance began as a fellowship of people interested in missions and the deeper Christian life. Anyone who agreed to certain principles could join without leaving their own church. Thus it was an alliance which referred to itself as a society. That humble gathering, under the leadership of A.B. Simpson, become the instrument by which The Christian and Missionary Alliance was born in Gradually churches were formed, the Lord s Supper and baptism practised, and pastors ordained. The Alliance finally admitted its denominational status. It had become a missionary denomination. The First Alliance Story In 1938, cottage prayer meetings in Calgary were organized to form a church. On January 27, 1941, this fledgling group was incorporated with 17 members present. In 1943, a church building was purchased (819 13th Avenue SW) and became the first non-rental home of The Alliance Tabernacle. As the congregation began to grow, it became evident that a larger facility was required to accommodate the ever increasing needs of an expanding church body. A parcel of land was purchased on the corner of 17th Avenue and 1st Street SW and on July 14, 1954, the church moved into its second home. It was during these days that the church was officially named First Alliance Church of The Christian and Missionary Alliance. First Alliance Church continued to prosper and in the fall of 1967, sod was turned and construction began at their third location at 1201 Glenmore Trail. This facility was dedicated to the Lord on December 14, Realizing the need to reach the rapidly expanding southeast section of the city, and having outgrown the Glenmore Trail facility, the congregation ventured out in faith and moved into its fourth home at this present location ( Street SE) in the fall of Ten men, each with a unique ministry, have served the pulpits of First Alliance. Untiring in their labours and unsparing in their time, they have been instrumental in hundreds having been led to the Lord and countless others have been strengthened in their walk with God. The call of untouched neighborhoods has resulted in First Alliance supporting the organization of four daughter churches and several ethnic congregations within the city. The call of a waiting world has motivated over one hundred of its members to enter ministries in North America and overseas. A great legacy has been left and we continue to look to the Lord for His enabling to be found faithful in the days ahead. It is our desire to walk obediently and confidently into the next millennium with Christ as the Head of this local body of believers.
What About the Missionary in Christian & Missionary Alliance? At any moment of the day or night, somewhere on planet earth, Alliance congregations are meeting in worship, and the C&MA International Workers and local church leaders are advancing the cause of Christ. With more than 20,000 churches and groups and with more than 2.5 million people in 81 countries and territories worldwide, it truly may be said that the sun never sets on this fellowship of Christians despite the constant fluctuations of international politics and developments. Alliance congregations are encouraged to pray for the work of the C&MA around the world. Secondly, we desire to be a people who honestly face the fact that we possess much of the world s resources and have much to give. God has allowed us to be responsible stewards of our income in order to help others. When we give to Global Advance Fund for the support of our International Workers and when we contribute to lifting people from poverty through World Relief Canada, we are placing our treasures in heaven. Thirdly, there are a number of opportunities for personal service in missions. Men, women and teens from time to time raise money and travel overseas to participate in evangelism and church planting projects or work projects. When our church announces such a project, consider it as a possibility for yourself. It can change your life forever. 11 WHAT DOES THIS LOCAL CHURCH BELIEVE WITH ALL OF ITS HEART? Statement 1 There is one God, 1 who is infinitely perfect, 2 existing eternally in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Statement 2 Jesus Christ is true God and true man. 4 He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. 5 He died upon the cross, the Just for the unjust, as a substitutionary sacrifice, and all who believe in Him are justified on the ground of His shed blood. He arose from the dead according to the Scriptures. 6 He is now at the right hand of the Majesty on high as our great High Priest. 7 He will come again to establish His kingdom of righteousness and peace. 8 Statement 3 The Holy Spirit is a divine Person, sent to indwell, 9 guide, teach and empower the believer, and to convince the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgment. 10 Statement 4 The Old and New Testaments, inerrant as originally given, were verbally inspired by God and are a complete revelation of His will for the salvation of people. They constitute the divine and only rule of Christian faith and practice. 11 Statement 5 Humankind, originally created in the image and likeness of God 12, fell through disobedience, incurring thereby both physical and spiritual death. All people are born with a sinful nature, are separated from the life of God, and can be saved only through the atoning work of the Lord Jesus Christ. 13 The destiny of the impenitent and unbelieving is existence forever in conscious torment, but that of the believer is everlasting joy and bliss. 14 Statement 6 Salvation has been provided only through Jesus Christ. Those who repent and believe in Him are united with Christ through the Holy Spirit and are thereby regenerated (born again), justified, sanctified and granted the gift of eternal life as adopted children of God. 15 Statement 7 It is the will of God that in union with Christ each believer should be sanctified thoroughly, 16 thereby being separated from sin and the world and fully dedicated to God, receiving power for holy living and sacrificial and effective service toward the completion of Christ's commission. 17 This is accomplished through being filled with the Holy Spirit, which is both a distinct event and progressive experience in the life of the believer. 18 Statement 8 Provision is made in the redemptive work of the Lord Jesus Christ for the healing of the mortal body. Prayer for the sick and anointing with oil as taught in the Scriptures are privileges for the Church in this present age. 19 Statement 9
The universal Church, of which Christ is the Head, consists of all those who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, are redeemed through His blood, regenerated by the Holy Spirit, and commissioned by Christ to go into all the world as a witness, preaching the Gospel to all nations. 20 The local church, the visible expression of the universal Church, is a body of believers in Christ who are joined together to worship God, to observe the ordinances of Baptism and the Lord's Supper, to pray, to be edified through the Word of God, to fellowship, and to testify in word and deed to the good news of salvation both locally and globally. The local church enters into relationships with other like-minded churches for accountability, encouragement and mission. 21 Statement 10 There shall be a bodily resurrection of the just and of the unjust; for the former, a resurrection unto life; 22 for the latter, a resurrection unto judgment. 23 Statement 11 The second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ is imminent and will be personal and visible. 24 As the believer's blessed hope, this vital truth is an incentive for holy living and sacrificial service toward the completion of Christ's commission. 25 Endnotes 1.
