1 Trinity Lutheran Church & Academy November 2016 Lutheran History and Culture Lutheran churches trace their roots directly to the Protestant Reformation that took place in Europe in the 16th century. Martin Luther, a German monk, became aware of differences between the Bible and church practices of the day. His writings, lectures and sermons inspired others to protest church practices and call for reform. By the late 1500s the Reformation had spread throughout Europe. Followers of Martin Luther's teachings were labeled "Lutherans" by their enemies and adopted the name themselves. Lutheran beliefs became widespread, especially in Germany and the Scandinavian countries (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Finland), later spreading throughout the world as early explorers took their faith with them on their voyages. Lutheranism came to the Americas that way; some of the earliest settlers in the Americas were Scandinavians, Dutch and German Lutherans. The first permanent colony of them was in the West Indies, and by the 1620s there were settlements of Lutherans along the Hudson River in what are now the states of New York and New Jersey. In North America, Lutherans from the Netherlands were among the settlers on Manhattan island in A congregation was formed there in 1648, but it was antedated by one established (1638) by Swedish settlers at Fort Christina (Wilmington) on the Delaware River. On nearby Tinicum Island the first Lutheran church building in the country was dedicated in Early in the 18th cent. exiles from the Palatinate established German Lutheran churches in New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland. The Salzburger migration to Georgia (1734) introduced Lutheranism in the South. In 1817, Frederick William III of Prussia sought to merge forcibly the Lutheran and Reformed churches of Prussia into a single organization called the Prussian Union. Some conservative Lutherans opposed this move and withdrew from the union to found the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Prussia as a free church. After World War I, the churches were no longer governed by state laws but still received state support. As people migrated to the New World they continued to speak and worship in their native languages and use resources from their countries of origin. Europeans from a particular region would migrate to a particular region in America and start their own churches. As the number of these congregations grew, scattered groups would form a "synod" or church body, and as the nation expanded so did the number of Lutheran church bodies. By the late 1800s the 20 or so Lutheran church bodies that would eventually merge to become The American Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Church in America had been established. Massive immigration from traditionally Lutheran countries had started, and between 1840 and 1875 alone 58 Lutheran synods were formed in the U.S. In 1847 the Missouri Synod of the Lutheran Church was founded by German immigrants to combat what they saw as the liberalization of Lutheranism in America. Today, the 8.7 million Lutherans in North America belong to 21 different Lutheran bodies. The largest of these at 5.2 million is the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), which came into being in 1988 as the result of a three way merger of the Lutheran Church in America, the American Lutheran Church, and the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches. This brings us to The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, which with 2,615,567 baptized members ranks as the second largest Lutheran church body in North America and the 11th largest denomination in the USA. The Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) has 421,189 members and is the third largest Lutheran Church in the USA. These three groups comprise about 95% of North American Lutherans. Additionally, the Lutheran Church is the established state church of Denmark, Iceland, Norway, and Finland; Sweden disestablished its Lutheran state church in For more information visit :

2 Trinity Concert Series Argentina born, Tomas Cotik, violinist, and pianist Tao Lin, originally from China, will perform at Trinity on Sunday, November 13, 2016 at 4:00 pm. This fantastic and highly acclaimed duo is a favorite in South Florida and with our concert series. We are honored to present them since Tomas has recently moved to Portland, Oregon, with a new position as assistant-professorship at the University of Portland. He is coming back to our area for performances and recordings with Tao Lin. This duo has been very highly praised for their recordings of Schubert, Mozart and Piazzolla, with their Schubert recordings awarded "Recording of the Year". This concert is an earlier Sunday in the month, due to traveling arrangements, so note the date this month, and be sure to attend the NOVEMBER 13, 2016 concert at 4:00 PM. Sunday afternoons at 4:00 pm. Christmas on Las Olas Christmas on Las Olas is such a great Fort Lauderdale tradition and a wonderful kickoff to the holiday season that can be enjoyed by all ages. The event runs from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 29th, between S.E. 6th Avenue and S.E. 11th Avenue, and is free and open to the public. 6 Learning Space Christian Academy Greetings from the Learning Space Christian Academy! We recently redecorated part of the preschool with help from one of our dedicated parents. Our goal was to create a space where parents, teachers, and the children can interact, share ideas, and enjoy each other's company. We created sitting areas with coffee and educational materials. In addition, the teachers did a beautiful job decorating our new bulletin boards with a fall theme and photos of the children. We hope the redesign of our welcoming area will help our families and teachers continue to strengthen the bonds they have formed and help us continue to serve our community. We are going to be catering Thanksgiving Dinner to those don't feel like cooking. 7 Academically Speaking with Mrs. Church Trinity Lutheran Academy has lots to be thankful for. This month we are taking time out of our schedule to learn how to be thankful for our many blessings. On Tuesday, November 22, our students will present A Chapel of Thanks to thank our Lord for all we are given. Each class will present a song, poem or short skit during our chapel that represents our thankfulness. This service begins at 10:30, all are welcome to attend. Following our chapel will be a luncheon provided by the students and their families. Each family is asked to bring a dish that they love to share with us. This is the second year we have done this, it went so well last year that we decided to have this meal instead of our tradition Turkey dinner we have had in the past. We are looking forward to the variety of dishes we will share and the time we will spend together. We invite all our friends and families to join us. We are also having our annual Scholastic Book Fair from November Our theme this year is Ahoy Bookaneers. We will have a variety of books for children of all ages. These books always make great Christmas gifts. Please come by and visit us during our school hours or on Sunday, November 20 th. On Tuesday, November 29 th Trinity is participating in Christmas on Las Olas. Our students have sung at this event for many years.
