93 RD CONVENTION LEADERSHIP DAY FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2015 FORMATION, VOCATION, AND TEACHING Leadership Day this year will concentrate on the second area of the Diocesan Strategic Visioning document: Formation, Vocation, and Teaching. As we transition from this past convention s theme of Stewardship of People, Place, and Money, we will have workshops that reflect the interconnectedness of these themes. Each of the workshops will fall under one of the four areas of our Strategic Visioning document. Plenary Speaker and Workshop Leader Dr. Julie A. Lytle, Author of Faith Formation 4.0: Introducing an Ecology of Faith in a Digital Age Life lover, curious innovator, and natural networker, Julie's career links theology, faith formation, and all forms of media. Her goal is to connect people, provide them access to resources they need, and build communities of practice to support and sustain efforts that enact God's Mission and fulfill the Dream of God. Her interest is primarily how environments fashion and form individuals and communities. Her book, Faith Formation 4.0: Introducing an Ecology of Faith in a Digital Age, 3

explores the ways each of the four eras of human communication (oral, written, mass mediated, and interactive) have influenced the ways Christians "proclaim the Gospel" (Evangelization) and "make Christians" (Faith Formation), Best known for her mantra, Message, Method, then Media, Julie helps individuals and communities develop educational and formational offerings that integrate appropriate pedagogical practices and technology to meet their mission and reflect their values. Julie's perspective, skills, processes and practices are anchored in over thirty years' experiencing integration ministry and media in parish, diocesan, church-wide, academic and health care contexts. She has an interdisciplinary PhD in Religion and Education from Boston College, MDiv from the University of Notre Dame, and BA in Journalism/Advertising from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She lives on Cape Cod and concurrently serves the seven dioceses of New England as the Executive Director of Province 1 and offers facilitation and consulting services through her company M3 (M cubed): Message, Method, then Media. Dinner Keynote Speaker Ms. Mary Hunter Rouse, Canon for Education, Cathedral of St. Philip, Atlanta, GA Mary Hunter is the Canon for Education at the Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta, Georgia and Visiting Instructor of Christian Education in the School of Theology at the University of the South. A lifelong Episcopalian and former camp counselor who can t seem to get enough of school, Mary Hunter is deeply passionate about bringing rigorous academic discipline to the practice of Christian formation and bringing practical experience from the field back into the classroom. Mary Hunter s presentation is entitled Organizing the Faithful Community: The Role of the Christian Formation Leader Reimagined. Using principles of community organizing as the starting point, Mary Hunter will explore a theologically grounded and exceedingly practical approach to the concept and practice of Christian Formation in the church today. 4

Formation Workshops on the Church as a Community of Worship, Prayer and Dialogue Music and Christian Formation Mr. Kenneth Miller, Associate Organist and Choirmaster at Trinity Cathedral, Columbia, SC STEVENSON-MCCLELLAND BUILDING UPPER FLOOR, ROOM 202 Much of our Christian heritage, and particularly our Episcopal heritage, affirms music's place as the chief art form of the church. Looking at several examples from the Hymnal 1982, as well as choral and organ music by Johann Sebastian Bach and others, we will discuss music and its application in Christian education and formation--how do we, as Saint Paul suggests, sing with the spirit, and sing with the understanding also? And how do we help others, especially children, to do the same? Kenneth Miller is Associate Organist and Choirmaster at Trinity Cathedral, Columbia, where he works with the choirs of Men and Boys, Men and Girls, and Adults. He is a doctoral candidate in organ at the Yale School of Music/Institute of Sacred Music and holds degrees from Yale and Lenoir-Rhyne University. He serves as Instructor of Organ at the University of South Carolina. Prayers with the People: Meeting one another where Faith and Life Intersect The Reverend Furman Buchanan, Rector of St. Peter s Episcopal Church, Greenville, SC The Reverend Dorian Del Priore, Associate for Children, Youth & Family Ministry at St. Peter s Episcopal Church, Greenville, SC STEVENSON-MCCLELLAND BUILDING UPPER FLOOR, ROOM 212 Even though Jesus regularly withdrew in order to be alone for prayer, he also embodied an active prayer life that met people where they were--walking on the road, sitting beside a pool, gathered on a grassy hillside, lying on a cot or sailing on the water--and he engaged with them in ways that were transformative. How can the Church become more focused about meeting people where they are with prayer and service that transforms lives? 5

In this session, The Rev. Furman Buchanan and the Rev. Dorian Del Priore will describe examples of prayer and blessing which meet people where they are. Blessing athletes who have spent months devoted to rigorous preparation and conditioning is a way that we can illuminate the connections of body and soul. Anointing those preparing for surgery with prayers that draw in the healing touch and words of family members can help others' claim their intercessory role. Celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, back to school and other special events are ways that we can meet people where they are and connect the practice of faith with the living of our days. The Rev. Furman Buchanan is the Rector of St. Peter s Episcopal Church in Greenville, where he has served since Prior to that he served at St. Martin s in the Fields Episcopal Church in Columbia. Fr. Buchanan is a graduate of the School of Theology at Sewanee, and Wofford College. In addition to parochial ministry, he serves as the ecumenical officer for our diocese and a participant on the steering committee for the partnership of Episcopal, Roman Catholic, Lutheran and United Methodist Bishops in South Carolina (LARCUM). He is married to Kim Buchanan and has three daughters, Katherine, Finley and Lamar. The Rev. Dorian Del Priore is the Associate Priest for Children, Youth, and Family Ministries at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Greenville, where has served since graduating from Virginia Theological Seminary in May Dorian is a graduate of the University of South Carolina, a native of Columbia, and former Director of Youth Ministries at St. John's, Shandon. He is married to Lauren Del Priore, and they have a son, Jordan, and a daughter, Brynn. Dorian loves butter pecan ice cream, photography, hiking, camping, and going on adventures with his family. 6

Formation Workshops on Formation, Teaching and Vocation Within the Church Faith Formation 4.0: Introducing an Ecology of Faith in a Digital Age Dr. Julie A. Lytle, Author of Faith Formation 4.0: Introducing an Ecology of Faith in a Digital Age STEVENSON-MCCLELLAND BUILDING LOWER FLOOR, GYM Faith Formation 4.0 looks at how our efforts to be story-keepers, storysharers, and story-makers have evolved over four eras of human communication, including 1.0 Jesus telling stories and the oral tradition; 2.0 Peter's letters to build and guide the church and the written tradition; 3.0 The reformation, printing press, and rise of mass media; and 4.0 faith communities online and the interactive age. Together we will explore examples of how communities are using digital tools and methods for ensuring they are used appropriately for evangelization and faith formation. Life lover, curious innovator, and natural networker, Julie's career links theology, faith formation, and all forms of media. Her goal is to connect people, provide them access to resources they need, and build communities of practice to support and sustain efforts that enact God's Mission and fulfill the Dream of God. Her interest is primarily how environments fashion and form individuals and communities. Considering current research on the importance of "Vitamin N (Nature)," and Pope Francis' passionate response to climate change, we will share examples of how our individual, church, and community actions to care for the environment can have a big impact. Resources for incorporating stewardship of the environment into Sunday school, youth, and VBS activities will be exchanged.
