Page 11 BEYOND WELCOME Pastor Anthony Stephens ( ) The bar in the old long running series Cheers was allegedly where everyone knew your name. Over the years the series gained popularity and strength by developing stories around the foibles and flaws of the regular characters. An ongoing theme was the incredible shallowness and self-serving nature of these characters. They failed to see others perspectives and lacked sensibility to others sensitivity. (A caricatured glimpse of the real world!) Nevertheless, from time to time characters in this community would all of a sudden demonstrate a deep compassion for one another. As this was such a stark change from the well developed natures of the character, this was the moment of irony. Immediately after the resurrection, Christianity or the Church was commissioned with being evangelic and hospitable. The evangelic component was 1 found in Isaiah s version of everyone knows your name, which is the prophet speaking for God and saying, I know you, and I have called you by name. The gospels have this call being extended through Christ. The hospitality, successively played down from its pinnacle position in ancient Judaism, assumed again a pride of position; not just Jews, but also gentiles, not just males but also females, not just free but slaves. Any who came to confess Christ as Lord and were baptized (according to early historians) were beyond being welcome; they were intrinsic to the Body. Any who had not come to that point of confession, were lovingly taught. The presumption, though, was inclusion. The Church progresses and regresses in various ways. It always progresses when we recognize that God s story written upon Christ interweaves our story patterned around, not our virtues, but our flaws. We, who have every right to be excluded, are known by name. Qualification is not the code for admission but rather our justification through Christ is. This is not self-justification, but justification by faith through faith. Similarly, progress is always made when we have mature compassionate discussions about those who have been historically excluded and their being included. What room was there in pre-christian Judaism for the tax collector or sinner? None. What room in the Church; why, they are our treasure. Note Jesus inclusion mushrooming through the disenfranchised; the leprous, the ritually impure, intermittently women, and even the raving, homicidal, xenophobe zealot Saul. This latter character we know today as Paul and we understand the grace of God better through his writings. Certainly every household will have its rhythms and indeed standards; but these need not be at the cost of reclaiming the Great Tradition: CALLING BY ME AND WELCOMING.

FASTING Amy Gardiner ( ) For a society that is always striving towards the next leisure moment, designing our tools for comfort, anticipating the 3-day weekend (well, those 2 day ones can be kind of hectic!) and planning the next get-away vacation, the idea of fasting does not sit down and put its feet up. No one wants to be uncomfortable or do without a creature comfort, or even deny oneself what is considered a personal reward. No one likes to sacrifice. And fasting has become a term synonymous with sacrifice. So here is another Lent. Again the questions will flurry, Are you giving up anything? Are you taking anything extra on? And the answers will vary there is no common ground when it comes to what is a sacrifice to one and what one is for another. And there is very safe ground in responding because there is no need to answer. Christians are in the lap of luxury. There are no obligatory fasts, prayer is not mandatory, and by His dying on the cross and resurrection, Christ has saved from sin and granted eternal life to those who believe. So, what s a good Christian to do to observe Lent? The Sunday school students know that the best way to respond to God s love and many, many gifts is to give thanks to Him everyday. They know we thank God everyday by praising Him in our prayer and in our loving actions towards others. They also know that some things get in the way of prayer- - - the many distractions of daily life and our creature comforts. If we were to take some of these distractions away wouldn t there be a clearer path to prayer? When Jesus spent His forty days and nights fasting in the desert he was in direct communication with God. No distraction. (Well, Satan is always a distraction, isn t he?) So we can surmise that fasting is prayer. And it is prayer that is uninterrupted by another daily choice; what to ingest. Our brothers and sisters in Islam have a holy month of fasting called Rahmadan. Each day of the month begins with a meal before sunrise, then no food or beverage is consumed until sunset. And this is not an optional fast.. It sounds awful, I know! But to them it is the equivalent to a month-long Christmas. Any why not? Forty days of prayer..forty days of Christmas because prayer brings joy?!?. Prayer is rewarding, prayer is healing, prayer puts us in the Heart of God! Sometimes one may wish to be secluded away from the hub- bub of our daily activities, and have a quiet day in prayer. It may be difficult for many to produce this situation with work, and other duties to perform. By fasting one is able to be in a secret place with God and go on with daily life so that none would ever suspect. Inner thoughts of God are deepened and a reminder that one is close to God alone is apparent in any pang of hunger. Reminding one: what more do we really need? God s omnipresent love and mercy. And when the fast is broken praise Him! Fasting is prayer. Prayer is healing. Prayer gives many rewards. Prayer puts us in the Heart of God. Maybe fasting is for you this Lent? Try it, you may like it! And not to worry, it IS optional! COW AND HEIFER INTERTIOL Eric Golberg ( ) At coffee hour there will be a basket out for collecting voluntary donations to Heifer International. Our wonderful coffee and fellowship time is a great example of the blessings we share with each other. However, for our cow to get fatter, we need to help others with their cows. That's the way it works in God's kingdom. We can literally do that by donating to Heifer International. Information on Heifer International will be available next to the basket. (Their website is ORGAN FUND NEWS Lisa Stephens ( ) John and Lisa hope that you have been enjoying the sound of the organ with its new speakers given by Stadelles Organ shop. The new sound has been so nice it is hard to believe that the organ is going to need to be replaced within the next few years. We have a good start on the organ fund, but still a long way to go. During Lent and for Easter please consider giving a little extra each week, even pocket change. There will be a container as you enter the church to collect whatever you would like to contribute to the organ fund. 2

PRESIDENT S LETTER Erich Paulsen ( ) I love the time of Spring. There is but one hurdle, the drab of Winter with all it s inconveniences like ice and difficult travel, expensive heat and everything has one color, gray. So I like to do tasks which are best done indoors and it carries me over the time of passion with all its trials and tragedies weighing heavily on my soul. How can you not have compassion with a man who at the greatest hour kept to his God for us. But Spring is near and Easter and Ascension. I already see the bright cloth and big hats, maybe a couple ties. I am not burdening you with the order of daily needs of Our Saviour at this time. The newsletter comes out bi-monthly and this time it covers passion and Easter. What can I address to you? Be generous in your compassion, and generous towards the maintenance of our great gathering place. Peace to you. Anyone who has a concern or question regarding our church, please feel free to consult with any of our church council members. Members are: Robyn Arecco, Dianne Carroll, Chuck Cooper, Ken Gabrielsen, Kunmi Johnson, Sue Montgomery, Frank Orts, Erich Paulsen and Bob Soucy. GLORIOUS EASTER BONNETS Mikiko Golberg ( ) Two years ago, Our Saviour ladies were invited by me to celebrate the glorious day of Easter in a special way, by wearing an old fashion icon the Easter Bonnet. I now remind all and extend the invitation to all new members to continue this grand tradition. Do not feel that you must buy a new hat, they can be expensive. Many of us take a straw hat and decorate it ourselves. AC Moore has lots of ribbons and flowers. Please join us in this fun tradition! I look forward to seeing all the wonderful hats on Easter Day! LENTEN / EASTER SEASON Pastor Anthony Stephens ( ) Lent and Easter in the same newsletter? Why not, after all they were not separate and could not be separated. The Lenten season of self denial reflects on the miserable, but not joyless journey to the cross. It was miserable because it was unavoidable without so much the glimmer of hope of avoidance. Nevertheless, those who came to believe through the words and actions of Christ experienced a profound joy; that of being whole. Such joy, however, was only a foretaste of the perfected joy when God s love beat sin and death as Christ s resurrection and blessing of the faithful clearly demonstrated. Such faithful had also been the faithless, but on such he built his Church. I hope that you will not separate Lent from Easter; particularly Good Friday from the Triduum leading to the celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord. If you keep them together then perhaps you will better understand the depths of God s love and the amazing grace shown in the resurgent Christ. Our Lenten / Easter season will look like this: March 1 st : Ash Wednesday services of Imposition of Ashes at Noon & 7:30 pm. Each Wednesday in Lent service of Evening Prayer at 7:30 pm. Holy Week Schedule: Palm Sunday (April 9 th ) Procession from Chapel of the Good Shepherd at 10:15 am Eucharist at 10:30 am. Holy Monday Evening Prayer at 7:30 pm. Holy Tuesday Evening Prayer at 7:30 pm. Holy Wednesday Evensong at 7:30 pm. Maundy Thursday Eucharist, pedelavium and stripping of the altar at 7:30 pm. Good Friday Services at Noon & Tenebrae at 7:30 pm. Low Saturday, Prayer Vigil 6:00 pm to 6:00 am. Resurrection of Our Lord, Sunrise Service at Bethel Chapel 6:30 am: Easter Breakfast at Our Saviour 7:30 am. Eucharist at 8:30 am. Children s Easter activities at approximately 9:30 am. Eucharist at 10:30 am. Please worship as often as you can through Lent and celebrate as heartily as you will at Easter. If you can sing, consider adding your voice to the choir. If you play a musical instrument see Lisa Stephens or John Nurmi. 3

RUNNING TO SAVE DARFUR Pastor Anthony Stephens ( ) The Croton Interfaith Committee on Darfur was elated to hear of President Bush s strong initiative to restore peace and justice in Darfur. Recall that the president had been sent many letters by the nine affiliated faith groups of the Croton Interfaith Council, and millions of others of faith and conscience across the country. It is entirely possible that the president decided to respond to Darfur of his own volition, but it certainly seems that people of faith in the electorate expressing their concerns about global justice could not have hindered. On Sunday April 30 th Pastor Stephens will be running the New Jersey Marathon again. So far by the grace of God there have been no muscle tears or sprains, and hopefully there will be no knee injuries in the process. Following the great footsteps of Pastor Chris Mietlowski, who in his marathon running has raised over $ for children s causes; Pastor Stephens goal is to raise some money to help victims of the conflict in Darfur and also young people in the Metropolitan New York area helped by programs run by Lutheran Social Services. Please consider sponsoring his run either in favor of those in Darfur or those in the Metropolis; or both. Look for a sign up sheet and possibly a web-page. THRIVENT COFFEE HOUR Thrivent On Sunday March 12, Thrivent Financial Consultant, William O Doherty will join us at Coffee Hour following Sunday Worship. He invites all congregation members to come out and find out about those resources available to reach your financial goals. Topics will include: Increasing your dollar impact in the Lutheran Community through matching donations Expanding your volunteer opportunities Building needed housing with Habitat for Humanity Leaving a Legacy Planning for Retirement Minimizing Taxes Protecting your Loved Ones and the Money you ve worked hard for. OUR SAVIOUR WISH LIST Pastor Anthony Stephens ( ) The following items are the outstanding requests: A new Organ for our church is needed. Please consider a gift to the Organ Fund. Altar Guild has requested a new Paschal Candle. Cost is $100. Thank you all for building up our worshipping community through your generosity. MUSICIANS WANTED Lisa Stephens ( ) Musicians wanted! The wonderful celebrations of Palm Sunday and Easter are just around the corner and it would be great to have extra singers in the choir. I m also looking for people to play the chimes. Please come share your musical talents with our church community. CORTLANDT FOOD BANK Jeff Esteves ( ) Cortlandt Emergency Food Bank The Food Bank is an independent, non-profit organization that provides non-perishable groceries to people in need in the Northern Westchester area. The Food Bank is located in the basement of the United Asbury Methodist Church at 19 Old Post Road south in the town of Croton. They are open every Saturday from 10AM - 12 PM on Saturday and by appointment during the week. Our Savior Lutheran Church has been a proud supporter of the Food Bank for over ten years. Non-perishable items such as spaghetti sauce, pasta and canned fruits and vegetables are generously donated in a basket at the back of the church and it is brought over to the Food Bank every couple of weeks. Your generosity is thoroughly appreciated by everyone that that uses and supports the services provided by the Food Bank. 4

A LENTEN REFLECTION Pastor Anthony Stephens ( ) Curvatus In Se In ancient times, and perhaps still in a few pulpits today, sin was described as curvatus in se or curving in on oneself. Philosophically this was similar to the idea of solipsism, or that the world centers on our own person. The difference between these ideas was one of dynamics; solipsism is an attitude left over from the healthy narcissism of childhood that the world revolves around us. Why would a baby in a healthy home believe differently? They cry; they are fed. There is no other. Life s cruel experience causes this illusion to dissipate, but sometimes, for many reasons an individual is stuck with the notion of their own centrality. In contrast, curving in on one s self is the dynamic of self-centering. This is not to be confused with centering, which is a tuning of one s self; often quite beneficial. Self-centering is the act, very often found in the attitude, of becoming besotted by one s self, self-righteousness and self-justifying. A symptom of this may be a deep sense of deserving. In 1973 Karl Menninger wrote Whatever Happened To Sin? His book sought to move beyond the content of putative (what is commonly held to be) sin; such as specific acts, to the underlying motivation or spirit. Stealing, for instance, is not sinful because it is the taking of something without permission, but rather it is sinful because it intends to deprive. Link to this the idea of curvatus in se, then one can see the sense that my need is greater than thine, or the pleasure that I derive is more important than the pain that you will suffer. My needs have priority over your needs to the exclusion of even their consideration. Naturally, as a psychotherapist (in practice on my day off, and in thought as an opportunity to use one of many lenses to look at life), I ask but what of self care? What of those who are pathologically incapable of thinking of themselves? Can we never think of ourselves, or does it just become a matter of too often? I am not sure of the answer precisely, but I do know that healthy people have an adequate sense of self regard, and this permits them to relate more fully with others. Thus instead of being curved in on themselves, they are curved out on others. Often times a key to this health is the non-use of such words like, ought, must, and should. Such words point to an inward curvature. In order to fulfill my script of the world then I must Compare this to, I chose to because I recognize a global benefit. However, I realize that Adam and Eve were not intended as paradigms of psychopathology, but were they curved in on themselves? The answer would seem to be, yes. I must know. I must have. I must eat. The inveigling power of knowing became greater than the communal power of blessing, or even the consequence of communal wrath. When Moses handed down the Law, clearly its intent was to benefit the community of Ancient Israel in its internal structure. Thus prohibitions were at the individual level so that the whole may not have been spoiled. Nevertheless, the Law was no match for the individual murmurer. What if my needs are not met? I don t really want to be on this Exodus. I could be better off back in Egypt. What if God s providence towards me is not all it is cracked up to be? Well, centuries have passed and laws have changed. Often times they have changed because the selfinterested have created circles of self-interest that stack the communal deck in their own favor. This happened long before the first lobbyist! Such societal changes slip quickly across the lines as they are often clothed in garments of righteousness: for instance, escape the cruel oppression of a poxridden, demented royal tyrant, bring peace, liberty and justice to all, and then claim land, steal it from its possessors because it looks good to me. Menninger s point in Whatever Happened is to show how sin has been lost in what he refers to as collective irresponsibility. By way of illustration he notes that stealing in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries was heavily punished, even when a loaf of bread was stolen to feed the starving family. Contrast this with various categories of sins of irresponsibility, such as architectural. He notes that young boys were used to clean the chimneys by climbing up them. This work led to high rates of lung disease and testicular cancer in the young boys. This cruelty registered with authors such as Dickens and Kingsley. Attempt to pass acts of parliament to prohibit the practice, or just widen chimneys so that they did not gather soot in the same way, were 5

thwarted because it was not in the best interest of the home owners. This sounds a little like the rationale for nonparticipation in environmental treaties, or the abrogation of nuclear arms treaties; because they are not in the best national interest; to which we concede that a valid point has been made and so we move on. It is difficult to know whether collective irresponsibility is a sum of the parts or now works collectively to shape the individual; as Peter Berger would say, The social construction of reality. In an amusing autobiography by Tony Hendra, entitled Father Joe, Hendra muses with his confessor, Father Joe, about self-interest. So Father Joe says, Your self interest is meant to help my self interest? Thoughtfully Father Joe replies, poppycock. Yet self interest benefiting self interest is seen as being the art of the deal; to borrow from the title of a work by Donald Trump. When two unrestrainedly acquisitive individuals meet, perhaps they may concede a little so they gain a lot. This is perhaps why the trickle down economy never did, or not a lot. It is not my intent to strike out at the dogma of capitalism, but rather note most political, social and economic systems that are in place if not profoundly self curving in nature, are vulnerable to becoming the Nautilus machine of self-curvature. In Plato s Republic, Plato noted that any imaginable system of government was ultimately subject to its own demise. Is this through the specter of self-curvature? Well, taking the examples of such stellar pro-social models as Nero, Idi Amin, Stalin, Sadam Hussein, the Shah of Persia, George III, and a lengthy list of despots and tyrants, you can judge for yourself! Even though, I have used some rather blatant examples to illustrate the notion of curvatus in se publicly or privately, I am painfully aware that our experience of trying to avoid this is far from clear. Knowing of our disposition to be selfish, we may hope that generosity and kindness will balance things out. If our national and political ideologies have a ring of beneficence about them, but require us to kill nonetheless, is that sin? Menninger and Rachel Carson, author of Silent Spring, have both been shown to be incorrect in their predictions of the environmental demise; but this may be a case of not yet. Nevertheless, as I 6 drive in a fast V6, which heats up the planet just a little quicker than a three cylinder hybrid of some species, is that sin? My own personal library of these ways of being in this place and this time becomes a crazy making list of questionable sin is it sin or not? Fortunately, some issues are clear and one can take action with some certainty, but often we do not know that doing good will have good results, or that doing bad won t. Clearly the marginal and often unperceived nature of the vast majority of our socially sanctioned sin cannot be adequately defined or identified. This suggests that the only remedy and relief that we are likely to find is a spiritual one. St. Augustine argued, Love and do as you will. This is not to be confused with Love and do whatever you like; which is a very curved concept. Augustine s argument was that if one is committed to being loving, then one cannot commit to being inward curving. Before Augustine came Christ, who condensed the two great commandments to the New Commandment of Love one another as I have loved you. Before Christ came the Jewish Shema y Israel: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your mind and all your soul. It s difficult, I would think, to be inward curving if you are doing all of that all of the time. Sin tends to come out for its annual brush up and dust off in this season of Lent, and we are obliged to deal with the text in Matthew 6 that seems to go against the way Lent is typically observed. We are not meant to be morose or doleful, but actually quite chipper. Lent was a season that came into being post-resurrection, but Jesus certainly knew about fasts and feasts. Perhaps he saw that in the mournful fasting of the Pharisees, they were not somehow becoming more morally pure, but in their selfabsorption became the more oblivious to the charitable aspects of the Law of which they were meant to be good stewards. I wonder therefore if being acutely focused on our own moral depravity tends to make us the more inward curved, when our gaze should be outward. What can we be doing? How can we be loving the Lord with all our heart, mind and soul through our actions towards the others he sends our way?

PRAISE GOD BY RECYCLING Amy Gardiner ( ) Sadly, we are past the point of returning health to our abused global environment. Many who stand behind their politicians who have helped exacerbate this condition, are of the belief that many environmental woes are natural in their progression. Regardless what one believes, the fact remains that the US is a major contributor to world pollution, the worse offender being greenhouse gases. It is all too easy to take advantage of the wonderful gifts of creation that God has blessed humankind with. Even the regular ones we hardly think about; air, water, sunlight, such everyday things (good things, as Martha would say!)that we need for physical survival. One small arrangement has been created for us to pitch in and show our respect and thankfulness while helping to sustain our environment is the recycling program. In Westchester County recycling is the law. It isn t something that only happens at home; it can be done when one is out and about or even while visiting Our Saviour Lutheran Church! What is recyclable: Do: Recycle all weekly and daily newspapers, including their glossy inserts. Recycle all outdated phone books, magazines, brochures, catalogs, colored and glossy periodicals and junk mail (letters, all types of envelopes, promotional advertisements, etc.). Do: Recycle corrugated cardboard boxes and brown paper bags. Don't: Waxed cardboard and grey cardboard (such as cereal, pizza and tissue boxes and towel rollers), plastic and styrofoam packing materials are not recyclable. Put these items in the garbage. Do: Recycle food and beverage cans, clean aluminum foil and trays and all empty aerosol cans. Do: Recycle clear, green or brown glass jars and bottles, any size. Don't: Glass that is not used for food or beverages, such as light bulbs, drinking glasses, crystal, window and mirror glass, ceramic ware, kitchen cookware, pesticide/herbicide bottles, etc., are not recyclable. Put these items in the garbage Do: Recycle plastic containers coded 1 or 2 on the bottom, commonly used for food, beverages, detergents, household cleaners and shampoos. Don't: Five gallon plastic pails, foam plastic materials, film plastic, plastic bags, and flower pots, regardless of their recycling code number, are not recyclable. Also, empty plastic containers which held potentially hazardous materials such as motor oil, pesticides, solvents, etc. should be discarded with your garbage. There are 2 blue bins for paper recycling, one in the parish hall the other in the office. I am finding there is a problem with having only one red commingle bin in the parish hall so I have placed another receptacle in the office for this purpose. Please do your best to recycle and reuse whether it be at home, while visiting Our Saviour, or while out and about! Thank you! The Sexton (amysobi@optonline.net) The salvation of this human world lies nowhere else than in the human heart, in the power to reflect, in human meekness and in human responsibility. - Vaclav Havel STEWARDSHIP CORNER Sue Montgomery ( ) Thanks to all those who prayerfully considered my question last month: Can you give just a little more each week, can you increase your giving by 10%? Let us continue to ponder in our hearts the wise use of God s extraordinary gifts. I belong to an internet group/service run by a lady called Flylady. Some people might label her a cleaning nut, but those who listen carefully can hear the parallel to the ways that Jesus has instructed us to lead our lives. This is no coincidence; she is a Christian and shares her faith. One of Flylady s messages is that clutter and stuff can take over our lives. We end up buried in it, and then we spend all our free time trying to organize, sort and store more and more stuff. Her definition of clutter is anything we don t love. She challenges her readers to use this test each time. Garbage goes in the trash; unloved items go to charity so they can bless someone else. She says: Don t save something just because you might need it someday too often we can t find these things when we finally do need them, or they 7

are too old or have become useless through disuse. Better to give them away now, and trust that your needs in the future will be met. Further, each time you bring something new into the home, asks again: do you need it, do you love it, will it bring you peace. The messenger is Flylady, but the message comes from God. Let me share Matthew with you: Do not store up for yourselves treasure on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. So my stewardship questions this time is: Do I, and all my stuff, serve the Lord, or am I serving my stuff and storing treasures on earth? Are my belongings tools which I use to follow God, or masters that I must dust, maintain and service? Do I buy things because an advertiser convinced me everyone must have one? Am I holding onto something that I do not need, but that might bless someone else? I confess to being a sinner, and the owner of a messy home. Flylady reassures us that the mess didn t happen in a day, and it won t be cleaned up in one either. And God provides the ultimate reassurance and forgiveness in the gift of His Son. So we are free to have faith, and to take small steps to use the gifts given by God as He has asked.
