Students will learn how they can respond to God s gift of friendship, as well as tell others how they, too, can become friends with God.

Genesis 1:1 and Friends with God booklet (p.1) will be the focus of Lessons 2-4. Remind students again of the Scripture Memory Verses pages that were provided in the students packets.

2 Lesson 2 MUSIC: (15 min.) Refer to the Music section in the Leader s Guide for ideas on how to use this time. Song examples and options can be found here: SHARE THE WORD: (15 min.) Friends with God Intro: Friends with God is a Gospel presentation centered around the idea of a friendship between God and man. Students will learn how they can respond to God s gift of friendship, as well as tell others how they, too, can become friends with God. Year-end Goal: for students to be able to relate the gospel presentation, using the booklet as a guide, and quote the memory verses that correspond with each page. Genesis 1:1 and Friends with God booklet (p.1) will be the focus of Lessons 2-4. Remind students again of the Scripture Memory Verses pages that were provided in the students packets. Encourage them to work on the memorization of these verses at home, as well as the corresponding section of the Friends with God booklet. Choose a game from the Scripture Review Games section of the Appendix, A-3 through A-4, to aid students in their memorization of this verse. Page 1: God has always existed, even before we could imagine. And we learn from the Bible that God is the Creator of everything. The Bible says that: In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1 He is absolutely loving and perfectly good. He is just, which means He is always fair. He is also holy. Being holy means that God is without sin and is perfect, which means that He is not like anyone or anything else in the world. Note: See the complete script, R-2a, in the resources. 3 MAP IT: (30 min.) This week we will complete the dough maps that were formed last week. Specifically, students will paint and label their maps. If you have new students in class this week, allow these students to paint a blank map. For step-by-step instructions on the process, you may access this portion of the lesson using a password from your curriculum administrator for the following link: Note to Teachers: As the students work through the following steps on their maps, verbally make connections with the geography through these activities. For example, Why are we painting this area blue? Correct! This is water. Which body of water is it? Yes, - the Caribbean Sea which connects to the Atlantic Ocean. What is this line we are painting black? Yes, the Tropic of Cancer. What is the Tropic of Cancer? An imaginary line that represents the degree to which the earth tilts and helps account for seasons of the year. What is this section of countries called that connect North and South America? That s right. Central America And so on. Instructions for Completing Dough Maps Instruct students to use their Central America Reference Map, R-1f, as a guide to aid them in completing the following project. 1. Paint land areas: Point out the elevation key. Notice that different elevations are in different colors. Instruct the children to imitate the map with their painting. Paint mountain regions and lower elevations in different colors as indicated. Note that the mountain range in Mexico continues down into the Central American isthmus. Remind them to paint the small Caribbean Islands green. 2. Label and/or paint oceans, rivers and lakes: Option 1: Paint a thin layer of blue all over the ocean areas, as well as the areas of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. Paint in Lake Nicaragua, the Rio Grande River, and the Panama Canal. Note: With this option, you will NOT do any labelling. Option 2: Do NOT paint ocean or sea areas; instead, leave this area blank for labeling that will occur in #4. DO paint Lake Nicaragua, the Rio Grande River, and the Panama Canal with blue. 4 Additional Note: Labeling takes a significant amount of time if you do not have strong writers. Use your discretion as to whether you will have your students paint or label based on the capabilities of your class and the time constraints given. Our recommendation is that younger students paint only. Upper elementary and older can label a portion or all of their maps. 3. Paint a black line for the Tropic of Cancer. 4. When dry, place completed projects in page protectors and place behind the Geography section in the student notebooks. GEOGRAPHY: (15 min.) Review the first country card: Mexico, R-2d. The goal for students is to be able to at least identify the country. Older students should also be able to learn much or all of the information in the Identify section on the back of the cards. For the first few cards, spend time in class identifying and labeling all of the items from the Identify section. Cards should be placed on a hinged metal ring and attached to one of the rings inside the three-ring binder. Lesson 2-4

5 Examples of completed Semester 1 country cards can be accessed using a password from your curriculum administrator for the following link: During future weeks, students can then identify items on cards independently. Therefore, as more countries are learned, class time may then be used for review of these countries by choosing one or more of the games found in the Geography Games section in the Appendix, page A-5. PRAY: (10 min.) As students learn about Mexico, lead students to pray for the people of Mexico. Remind the class that the ultimate goal for gaining knowledge about these countries is so that we will be moved to pray and ask God to be glorified in the lives of the people that live there. 7 Friends with God Script Distribute the student version of the Friends with God gospel booklet to each student. Explain to students that they will need to write some things in their booklets so they should listen carefully to hear when and what they should write. Begin to read the booklet, using the script below. Page 1: Our story begins with God. God has always existed, even before we could imagine. And we learn from the Bible that God is the Creator of everything we can see and everything we can t. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1 He is absolutely loving and perfectly good. He is just, which means He is always fair. He is also holy (Instruct students to write holy in the gray area on Page 1). Being holy means not only that He is without sin and is perfect, but also that He is not like anyone or anything else in the world. Page 2: God created everything in the world in a perfect way. The Bible tells us that God created the first people, too. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27 Their names were Adam and Eve and they had a wonderful relationship with God. They were friends with God. (Instruct students to draw a stick figure of Adam inside the gray area. Students should also write the word friends on the line above the people and God on page 2.) Page 3: God gave Adam and Eve so many good things to enjoy, but he also gave them one command: not to eat from one tree in the garden. They did it anyway. They disobeyed God and this disobedience is called sin. (Instruct students to write = in between Disobedience and sin in the gray area on page 3.) So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Genesis 3:6 Adam and Eve s sin made a relationship with God impossible because He is holy. Sin got in the way of their friendship. (Instruct students to write SIN in the gray area between Adam and Eve and God.) Page 4: We are also sinful because we disobey God. Our sin separates us from God. The Bible says in Romans 3:23 - For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

8 That means we ALL (not just some of us) fall short of God s standard of perfection. (Instruct students to draw a stick figure in the in the gray area to the left of SIN and label it us.) Page 5: BUT God loved the world so much and wanted to have a relationship with us, the people He created. (Instruct students to draw a heart in the gray area between God and the people.) God sent His son, Jesus, to earth to make a way for us to be friends with Him. Jesus said, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6 (Instruct students to write Jesus in the gray space in the sentence.) Page 6: Because God is holy and just, He requires a punishment for the sin in our lives. That punishment is eternal death. When Jesus died on the cross, He took the punishment for our sin. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God.. I Peter 3:18 (Instruct students to write Jesus in the gray area in the middle of the cross.) Three days after Jesus died, He rose from the grave, defeating sin and death. Page 7: If we turn (Instruct students to write turn in the gray space in the sentence.) from our sin and follow Jesus with our lives in faith, He will save us. (Instruct students to draw an arrow in the gray area around faith and pointing toward Jesus.) We are no longer an enemy of God. Instead, we can be His friend again. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. Romans 5:10 Page 8: God s plan for us is to live with him forever, worshipping him and enjoying his friendship. You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Psalm 16:11 (Instruct students to draw a stick figure in the gray area worshiping God and to write the word forever" at the end of the sentence.)
