2 Page Two Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, An important way for the Diocese of Joliet to spread the Good News and inspire people in their faith life is through Christ is our Hope, the magazine that gets sent to every registered parishioner within the seven counties that make up the Diocese of Joliet. I cannot thank you enough for making this possible. My hope is that you find reading the magazine to be a source of great inspiration and education about our Catholic faith and have shared some of the articles with others. All the parishes in the diocese help make this vital ministry possible, along with your personal support, so it is a vital part of the diocese s efforts at engaging in the New Evangelization. My prayer is that the magazine is one of the many ways through which the diocese tries to help people grow in faith. Through articles by and about the people who are part of our diocesan family, the magazine seeks to keep you connected to the Church and to make everyone realize that turning to Christ is when our hopes, our joys and our lives truly come to life. Through your generous donation, and support from the parishes in our diocese, Christ Is Our Hope is published each month, reaching out to over 170,000 households. Please help me to continue to spread the Good News with a donation to this appeal. You can mail your gift in response to the direct mailing sent to your home during the second week of September. By making a donation, you are helping to spread the Good News to others, just as Jesus did. As with any effort, prayer is important. So thank you for your prayers for the magazine being an integral part in helping people grow in faith, and thank you for your generosity. Sincerely in Christ, Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon, Bishop of Joliet Dear Parishioners, In spite of the cool weather, what a great Fall Festival we enjoyed last Saturday which began with an outdoor mass at 4:00 p.m.!! 3 Page Three NANCY MCKNIGHT Phone #: Director of Faith Formation Eighth grade students from both the school and Religious Education Program and their parents should mark their calendars for the first Confirmation GIFT (Gathered in Faith Together) meeting on Wednesday, September 30, at 6:30 p.m. in the church to hear an overview of the Confirmation program and receive your Confirmation project packet. The theme for 2015 Catechetical Sunday is Safeguarding the Dignity of Every Human Person. This year s theme reminds us that the dignity of each human person rests in the biblical teaching (Genesis 1:26-27) that he or she is made in God s image and likeness. It also reminds us that we the baptized may need to actively support and protect others from all sorts of harm, cherishing human life from the moment of conception to a natural death. The Ten Commandments give emphasis to human dignity and human rights. They are a prime example of how the "living tradition" of the Church, guided by the Holy Spirit, anchors its teaching in the Scriptures but remains open to the complex realities of modern human society. Some people think of the Commandments as simply DOs and DON'Ts, but they are much more. The living tradition of the Church finds in them signposts along the road toward greater personal and social respect for human dignity. They have a profound relevance for both individuals and societies that seek to promote the human dignity and human rights of all. Review the Ten Commandments and share them with your family. Think of ways that you can Safeguard the Dignity of Every Human Person as a family this year. This weekend, parishes across the country will honor those who share in the evangelizing and teaching mission of the Church through a special rite of commissioning and blessing. Here at St. Philip the Apostle Parish the following catechists and teen assistants from the Religious Education Program and teachers from the school will be commissioned to share the faith of the Church with the adults, families, youth, and children of the parish: Angela Addante, Fran Amadeo, Victoria Anelli, Nick Baker, Sandy Bays, Mena Biagi, Eric Blume, Stefania Camaci, Viviana Carrazco, Katie Castellano, Anna Marie Ciccone, Sam Conforti, Nick Conrad, Nino Conte, Sabrina Cucinella, Lia Cucinella, Bonnie Daniello, Jocelyn Deang, Nicole DeNicolo, Tom Deutsch, Stefano Favuzzi, Salvatore Ferenzi, Jeremy Gloms, Gayle Gloms, Jessie Gomes, Philma Hinkhouse, Lilly Katavic, Veronica Kenar, Jack Kent, Michael Kroll, Ethan Macaraeg, Mary Madonia, Cristina Mannino, Nick Maucieri, Alexa Montero, Abigail Montero, Zachary Novak, Caterina Partipilo, Anna Pecoraro, Sarah Petrbok, Frank Reid, Pam Reith, Maria Rodriguez, Shannie Roeglin, Mia Rumps, Maddie Rumps, Sam Sannasardo, Gina Sannasardo, Holly Schwartz, Tamber Soverino, Bernadette Tamondong, Diane Thompson, Eileen Tran, Magdalena Uribe, Karyn Ustas, Amy Valdez, Don Wysocki, and Lisette Zermeno. 4 Page Four CAROL SCHUBERT Director of Liturgy & Adult Faith Formation Phone #: x104 Address: People camp out for days to be the first to get tickets to a rock concert, to purchase the latest techno gadget, or to crash the doors to stores on Black Friday. How quickly whatever is gained from these efforts to be first passes! Jesus teaches in this Gospel that what endures is to be last--to be servant of all. The lesson Jesus teaches in this Gospel is so important that he takes the disciples off by themselves. Yet, for all his effort, they do not understand. It takes a lifetime of discipleship to come to a deeper, life-giving appreciation for what dying to self means, for what being servant of all entails, for where choosing to be least leads. This lifetime of effort opens onto an eternity of Life. First and last are not positions in line, but ways to be oriented toward one another. We become first in relation to other not by shouldering our way past them, but by being last through serving them. We serve in simple, everyday ways: holding a door open, smiling at a someone, listening instead of always being the one talking. How quickly these small gestures of dying to self for others pass, yet they have lasting merit now and for the Life to come. 5 DEACON SEAN MCGREAL Pastoral Associate & RCIA Director Phone #: x105 Address: Give us this day our daily bread. We are all familiar with this phrase from the Lord s Prayer. Recently a woman who is relatively new to the parish began coming to daily Mass, and she shared with me about how wonderfully our parish community has welcomed her. She was also impressed with the number of people who come to daily Mass and to our Wednesday morning communion service (approximately people attend on a regular basis). They come to be nourished in body, mind and spirit. They also come to be part of something bigger than themselves. Most of these people are retired; but others come before going to work. All come for the strength that can only come from the grace that God bestows through the Eucharist, our daily bread. The nourishment received in Word and Sacrament sustains us and gives us hope. This strength and hope enables us to live through the difficult times of our lives and helps us to be drawn closer to God and our community. Being a part of a Eucharistic community builds the kingdom of God in our hearts and in our world. When God is central to our lives we live in His peace. I understand that not everyone has the opportunity to attend daily Mass but if you have the chance, give it a try and see what effect it has on your life. October 4 is Respect Life Sunday and the date of the National Life Chain. We need priests, deacons, Knights of Columbus, men, women, and children to pray silently at the Advantage Clinic located at 203 E. Irving Park Road in Wood Dale from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. on that day. Our church has been assigned to pray for the closure of this clinic. Signs with prayers will be available. Other churches will be there too. Please stand up for life. 7 ANNULMENT MYTHS & TRUTHS: The following are myths about divorce, annulment, and remarriage in the Catholic Church. (Please note the word annulment is commonly-used jargon, but the proper church term is declaration of nullity.) Myth #6: Children of parents who received a declaration of nullity are considered illegitimate. Truth: The parents who are now divorced or whose marriage is civilly annulled once obtained a civil license and had a legal marriage. Any children of that legal marriage are legitimate offspring. A civil divorce, a civil annulment, and a Church annulment do not change the legitimacy of the children. Also, the parents responsibility toward the children remains the same as before the civil divorce and annulment. The annulment process is concerned only with the spouses, not the children or arrangements involving the children such as custody or support. Myth #7: Children of divorced or remarried Catholics may not be baptized or receive any other sacraments. Truth: Children of divorce may be baptized and receive any other sacrament providing that the parents of the children intend to raise their children in the Catholic faith. If you or someone you know would like to receive accurate information about the annulment process or need help navigating the annulment process, you can contact Fr. Danaher ( x101) or Carol Schubert, Annulment Field Advocate ( x104 or cschubert@st-phil.org).
