Guyjest letter The Society of Jesus OCT 2011 n 28th July, just a couple of weeks after I took over from Dermot, I was asked to preside at the Funeral service of Sr Beatrice Fernandes. This Owas an emotional moment for me. When I arrived in Guyana as a rather uncertain scholastic back in 1989, it was Sr Beatrice who first invited me to venture into the interior. She had organized three youth Seminars in St Ignatius, Sand Creek and Aishalton and she wondered if I would like to come along. After those first few tentative steps I never looked back, spending my second year of regency with Fr Britt in the Rupununi and Fr Fred Rigby in the Pakaraimas and then after theology in Brazil and a year as a deacon in Moruca I was to spend the next 12 years based in Kurukabaru followed by three in Karasabai. Now the Lord has called Beatrice to let go of one life and enter into another. In a way He asks the same of me. As I sit at my desk in Arrupe I sometimes think of how Ignatius must have felt sat at his desk in Rome. I am sure at times he longed for the freedom of the open road to be journeying through India with Francis Xavier or exploring the jungles of South America with the youthful Jose Anchieta. But then I think of Ignatius gazing out at the night sky over Rome, lost in wonder at the majesty of the stars and caught up in the mystery of a God who is present in all things. Ever the pilgrim he would know that the road goes ever on and the same Lord who had led him from Loyola down to Manresa, across to Jerusalem, back to school in Paris and finally with many twists and turns brought him here to Rome, led him still. In these first few months in town I have received an invitation from another Sister, this time Sr Mary Ann of the Sisters of Mercy has asked me to help give a course in spiritual direction. I have taken this as a big hint from the Lord that what is asked of me now is to have confidence in our Jesuit charism. I do indeed give thanks to God for calling me to be a companion of Jesus and servant of Christ s mission sent to the frontiers but sent as part of an apostolic body. It is a great joy to me to see the tremendous work that is being done by my companions here in the Guyana Region labouring in often difficult circumstances but doing so with cheerfulness and good humour. The work of each one of us contributes to the mission of the Region and indeed the Society as a whole. Let us pray that the Lord will grant us that union of hearts and minds that will make our work more effective for His Kingdom. Paul Martin sj Regional Superior

Rewind mode Early French Jesuits arrived in what is By 1762, there were 14 Jesuits in now Cayenne in 1666, coming from the Cayenne, including the Irishman Fr well-established mission on Martinique. Philip O Reilly, SJ who won the trust and They had considerable success friendship of those to whom he wished to establishing settlements for the preach by first playing the flute and indigenous people after the pattern of the joining them in their festivals and Paraguay Reductions. In 1712 Fr Aime celebrations. Such promising beginnings Lombard, SJ established a school here were however cut short in July 1763, with the farsighted vision of forming when French colonists expelled all the indigenous catechists to minister to their Jesuits from Cayenne, anticipating the own people. worldwide suppression of the Society that was to come in A few years prior to the arrival of the Jesuits in Cayenne another member of the Martinique mission, Fr Denis Meland, SJ made a visit to Spanish Guiana. He wrote enthusiastically to the General of the Society in 1652, talking of his efforts to learn the Carib language and in this way hoping to proclaim the Good News of the Gospel in the wide lands of Guiana that stretch 300 leagues and more, from the River Aquarabis to the River Amazon. These hopes sadly were not to be realized and Meland had to return to Martinique. However he returned the next year with Fr Piere Pelleprat, SJ who was similarly moved by the opportunities this new land presented for missionary work, writing in 1654, it is sad to think that on these 400 leagues of coast... and in those almost infinite lands that stretch from north to south, there is no priest or religious to teach the faith to the countless multitude of peoples who live there. -to be continued

Aishalton T he Amerindian Heritage Day 2011, with its diverse programme of events and activities, was held in Aishalton on the 10 September. Many politicians including the Prime Minster condescended to be part of this celebration. Fr Ronnie Fernandes blessed the cultural site with the opening prayer that ushered in the rest of the activities for the day. In his address the Prime Minister assured the people of their rights as citizens to land and security and the promulgation of policies for their development. The day ended with a community meal where everyone eat in the company of each other and expressed their community belongingness. The month of September provided opportunities for Amerindians of Region 9 to focus on their culture and their contributions, both past and present, to the development of the country. The month s activities bought many Amerindians a sense of pride and recognition, and an opportunity for reflection on where they were, where they are presently and to share vision for their future. It allowed them to learn more and to appreciate the diverse rich culture, customs and practices. The people of Aishalton are now privileged to have a TV station, installed on the day before the Heritage Day. The people and specially the children have grabbed this opportunity to make use of this facility for educational purposes. The Jesuit Presbytery of Aishalton stands illumined between 6pm 10pm as we are connected with the village generator. Thanks to the efforts of Fr Ronnie Fernandes who with the permission of the REO of the Region, was able to get this done without any itch. There are many projects on the pipeline to utilize this facility for the benefit of the people. The computer literacy classes for adults will soon commence during this hours. Now that we are in dry season, the Jesuit team is on the move to different villages catering to the spiritual needs of the people. Sr Leonarda & Sr Lucy are stationed in parishes maneuvering the church teams in preparation of their Church feasts. - Sch. Wilson sj

Berbice ello! greetings to all the Jesuits of Guyana, from Augustine Antony the new arrival from India. It is little more than a month since i took over as the director of GHD center. Things are moving smoothly. After studying the situation of the center and its need I Hhave enhanced the computer section with three new computer systems for the use. Since the power cuts seems to be quite frequent now the center has a new generator which has saved the students from losing the classes. The cooking and catering section needed a fridge for their class and they are provided with a water dispenser that has a small fridge attached to it. Both staff and students are happy about them. At present we have 56 computer students and 17 students of different age group for catering and craft classes. I am trying to increase the number of students for both categories. Stone sj from across the border... T he Jesuit community San Francisco Javier in Bonfim has a recent visit from our regional superior, Fr. Adelson Araujo dos Santos. Two scholastics came along, and our meeting became a regular feast when Fr. Joaquim crossed the river to attend the final vows of Fr. Nathan Stone. Other than that, we continue to visit the 22 Amerindian communities on our side of the river, together with the Sisters of Charity, doing baptisms, first communions, weddings, patron saints, and some interesting workshops on Amerindian rights as outlined in the Brazilian Constitution of We are also giving a workshop on how to read the Bible. First semester, the Bishop's Conference sponsored a very good workshop on the envirmonment, climate change and sustainability. In the third photo, Sch Eddy Medrano from Nicaragua explains the greenhouse effect. (Nathan Stone sj is an American Jesuit working in Brazil)

Plaisance couldn t but learn to admire the students who devote their summer holidaystime in many different useful learning ways every year. There are many establishments that offer the students a part time job for some earnings & also for Isharpening their intellectual & developmental skills. We had only ten high school & University students for the summer camp this year at St John the Baptist Church Plaisance, arranged by Fr James. Life is a song if you sing it The guides were Professor Melville, who spoke on the main characteristics of a good leader, Sch. Wilson Moras whose contributions were greatly appreciated toward the better& deeper understanding on true leadership thro his film shows, discussions & the popular games, Fr Anil dealt with the Personlaity development and its latest tips & inserted fitting quizquestions, Fr James gave the students all the secrets to be a professional speaker & finally distributed the prizes too for the good speakers,. Mr Eliza the music teacher made the students convinced that Life is a song if you sing it. -Anil sj Summer Club at Victoria mmaculate Conception Church, Victoria has been conducting summer club for school children below 14 years of age for the last ten years. This year it was held in the fourth week of August. The children, not just the catholics but also the Inon catholics of the Golden Grove Belfield area participated. The programme for the children started every morning at 9.00 hrs and ended at hrs. The activities included finger painting, making pencil cases, colouring of pictures, singing and bible study. Ms Holly Perreira ably assisted by the youth of the Parish made the summer club enjoyable to the little children. The summer club concluded with the mass celebrated by Fr James Gonsalves, the parish priest. The parish priest s joy was noticeable as he encouraged the children to dance to the lively songs. The children were attentive during the mass, wonderfully participated...being the salt and the light of the world in the interactive homily on the theme of being the salt and light of the world. One of the children answered that his way being the light at home is by putting on the lights for his mother at home. -Anil sj

Election observation in Zambia phone call from the Commonwealth Secretariat on Thursday 8th September asking me to confirm my availability to join the Commonwealth Team to observe the Presidential- Parliamentary-Local Government elections in Zambia put me in a tight spot as they had Abooked tickets for travelling on Sunday 11th September. So after discussing the pros & cons with the Reg. Sup., I was able to accept the invitation and began making preparations for the long journey. My route was to New York, then London, Jo burg and finally Lusaka, arriving at 11.30am on the 13th September. I was able to convince the young lady at Heathrow to allow me travel to Wimbledon to collect a sweater and a jacket, after she had suggested that there were many nice shops right there in the airport nice money too!!. Once the rest of the group had gathered, we began our rounds gathering local information of the election process. We met the Elections Commission, other international observers such the National Democratic Institute (NDI America), the European Union Observers and the Southern African Observer Group. We also met that same day, the High Commissioners from Britain, Canada, South Africa, and other Commonwealth States with High Commissions in Zambia. After receiving our accreditation badges from the elections commission, we began our internal training as International Observers. At the end of this training on Saturday 17th September, we were paired off for the purpose observation on polling day, which was scheduled for Tuesday September 20th. I was paired off with a former British M.P and we were sent off to the eastern province of Zambia with our base in the town of Chipata. Our first visit in Chipata, was to the Town Clerk, who received us in his office but we were interrupted by a loud bang just outside his window, followed by falling broken glass. I headed for cover across the room, while the M.P fell to the floor in good British style. It turned out to be a concrete block which fell from the team carrying out repairs to the roof of the building and smashed the window in the office. The rest of our observation the following day, polling day, was calm and without incident. There were rumors, as they must be, in a competitive election but at the end of it all, the elections were fair and free with a small degree of violence in the Copper Belt. After returning to Lusaka, we got down to writing the report, which we did in stages and completed this on Monday 26th September, and then took our separate paths back to our home bases. Now I look forward to observing Guyana s National and Regional Elections sometime in November. - Malcom sj

Bro.Pedagogy from Brazil here, where the asphalt ends and the town change its name, Fé e Alegría began" Fr. José Maria Vélaz S.J, the founder of the Fé e Alegría Venezuela in Since I came to South Brazil to have a experience among the South Brazilian Jesuits in 2007, I began to be Tengaged in pastoral works at Fé y Alegría, a social- educative service here in Porto Alegre. And apart from my engagement at the institution and its social educational activities, I am also doing a university course in pedagogy. At the end of a University course a student is required to write and produce a conclusion work base on any topic of his/her interest which arise along the course of his studies. At present such job to produce a conclusion work (Monograph) for the end of my course is this semester and my study is on Fé y Alegría, of South Brazil. The topic which I chose to research on is humanization in educational practice at Fé y Alegría which basically means how Fé y Alegría offers its students to be human in a sense of a transformation experience from being victims in an inhumane society. The reason for me choosing such topic to research on came from a curiosity and interest during my experience as a volunteer at the institution. I saw in the educative plan of Fé y Alegría, that there exist two pedagogies Ignatian, and Freiran. (Frerian comes from Paulo Freire, a There exist two pedagogies: Ignatian and Freiran Brazilian social educator who is known for his popular education method, an alternative education which he created different from that of the traditional elitist system of education in Brazil and Latin America in the sixties). The method I am using to carry out my research is Case Study to investigate how the students of Fé y Alegría who comes from a precarious social reality are being humanized by the two to pedagogies, knowing that the two have the same goal in their proposal in offering opportunities to transform peoples life through their education of empowerment, ethical/ Cristian values and conscientization. Wish me well to have a good conclusion of my studies here. AMDG. -Medino sj

Guyana Region: dynamic and rejuvenating, says google analytics oogle analytics. It is almost three years since we first launched the region s site on the feast of St Francis Xavier, 3rd December Since then, it has seen a remarkable spread in making our presence and work visible. According Gto some overseas Guyanese, the site is indeed a real resource to keep abreast of the Jesuit mission in Guyana. Google analytics provides useful web statistics such as number of hits per page, service provider, country, city, browser, traffic-source, bounce rate and even userbehaviour of every single hit. Simultaneously, the constant flux in the region in terms of new Jesuits coming into the region and frequent shuffling of human resources could be considered as dynamic and rejuvenating. Above all, our presence among the Amerindians in the interiors that intrigues and inspires many. Though there is lot happening in the interiors and in mainland Georgetown but still there is a struggle in making our mission vibrant. Perhaps, our use of the latest social media like facebook and twitters are some possible means to network and collaborate with local and international organizations. This is exactly the Jesuit Communication in Guyana (JESCOM- Guyana) dreams of making it a reality. -Justin sj (Web master)

Shepherding the Brazilian community in GT he crowd accompanying Jesus was a motley crew of men and women of different categories and social class. There was a fixed group who constantly persevered in following him, and another curious group who came seeking healing and then Treturned to their homes. And so it was that there were always the regulars and there was people coming and going, returning to see Jesus. The Brazilian community in Georgetown is not a crowd of people, but a small group of people who come together on Sundays in the church of Our Lady of Fatima to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus as a concrete gesture of their faith. There is one fixed group of people who are there faithfully every Sunday rain or shine. They come with faith to celebrate the Eucharist that Jesus had made in his memory. It is the Church, the people of God, which united by faith develops communion. Without the church, there is no Eucharist; without the Eucharist there is no Church. But there is another group, those drop-ins, people who come from the fringes to get to know the community and they also come to participate in the mass. For some of them it is because out in the remote areas, there is mass only in English. They come once or twice to mass before returning for their small community. The group is small and shy, especially when it comes to offering to read one of the Sunday readings or to sing out, but each week there is someone willing to take the risk. After mass the community has a social moment with cake, snack and soda where the people have a chance to sit and share their stories and to get to know each other. This time together is what is helping to develop that sense of community and strengthen our commitment to living our faith journey. ( F r. 10 The overwhelming feeling, as I approach 80 years of life, is one of immense gratitude for all that God has given me: 62 years as a Jesuit, a wonderful education and training, a supportive and loving family, numerous relatives, friends and companions in several parts of the world. And this gratitude extends to the present. Though Psalm 90 in the Bible makes it quite clear that our life lasts for seventy years, eighty with good health and then goes on to comment; but they all add up to anxiety and trouble - over in a trice and then we are gone (PS 90, 9&10). Others have a concept of old age that would seem to confirm this. My memory is starting to go. The only thing I still retain is water which cor robor ates the victim who complained that when you get to my age, life seems little more than one long My life in the Lord... Campbell sj Our life lasts for seventy years, eighty with good health march to and from the lavatory. It is for this reason that another claimed; I don t need you to remind me of my age. I have a bladder to do that for me. This reminds me of the four stages of growing old which I first heard as a school boy from one of our masters: Stage 1: You begin to forget names and places. Stage 2: You forget dates and commitments. Stage 3: You forget to zip up your trousers. Stage 4: You forget to unzip them. But the Christian tries, or should try, to see old age as something positive. It is, after all, God getting us ready to be with him for ever. And though Churchill once said I am ready to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is ready for the ordeal of meeting me is another matter, the challenge is not to lose faith in our Maker who will call each of us when he is ready for us and we for him. This is what old age is about. It is a stripping of our faculties and possessions that feels negative until we realize what the stripping is for. This is very well expressed in Francis Thompson s well-known poem The Hound of Heaven in which the soul is chased by God s love which it attempts to flee for fear of having nought else besides. It seeks to take refuge in a myriad of pretexts and hideouts until all are exhausted and there are none left. Finally it has to admit: Naked I wait thy love s uplifted stroke: My harness piece by piece thou hast hewn from me And God explains why: All which I took from thee I did but take Not for thy harms. But just that thou mightst seek it in my arms, All which thy child s mistake Fancies as lost, I have stored for thee at home; Rise, clasp my hand, and come This emptying out of self is therefore an essential element in all true love and a necessary step on our journey towards God. And, as St Paul points out (Phil. 2,7), this was true even of Jesus Christ who: Being in the form of God. emptied himself (semetipsum exinanivit)

Commenting on this passage, Teilhard de Chardin in Le Milieu Divin explains that: God needs to hollow us out, to empty us in order to make room for himself. It is of course painful to acknowledge that He doesn t really need my work, my plans, my efforts, my gifts, however essential these may appear to me. It is me myself He wants to possess which means I have to let go of all that is not Him. As St John the Baptist put it, I must decrease so that He can increase. And this is precisely the process old age favours and promotes, if we let it. It should therefore appear to us not as something negative or destructive of self but rather the exact opposite. It is growth and fulfilment at a much deeper level and should bring us joy, peace and a longing full of hope. An 80th birthday seems an ideal occasion to celebrate this. It should remind us of the promise of Jesus when he said: I have come that you may have life and have it more abundantly (Jn. 10,10). It is a new and fuller life that is being offered us. As the preface in the Mass for the Dead puts it, an everlasting dwelling place in heaven to replace the body of our earthly dwelling. This is why Father Arrupe, on being asked if he was afraid of death, was able to reply: Death is one of the things that I most desire, something that gives meaning to my life. It is not a leap into nothingness; it is throwing yourself into the arms of the Lord, the final Amen of my life and the first Alleluia of my eternity. How right was St Paul to cry out Death, where is thy victory, where is thy sting? (1Cor, 15,55). As a Sacred Heart sister in her late nineties wrote on the prospect of facing death: The nearer that moment, the greater the anticipation as the climax approaches. As before, the goal is at times partially obscured: pain, the various strippings of age, the dimming of eyesight and hearing and memory, the losing of loved ones who have beaten us to heaven these may at times lessen the view. But there will come at last the great moment when we round the last obstacle and there here is home not a much loved place but a Person Love itself and for ever. How could we do otherwise than celebrate old age? May I make my own the petition in matins for Tuesday in week 4: Lord, help us to realise that our troubles are slight and short-lived; - they are as nothing compared with the joy we shall have when we reach our home with you. Stay with us, Lord, on our journey. -Campbell Johnston sj (Fr Michael Campbell-Johnston, SJ spent number of years in Guyana and now he resides in Farm St, Curia, London! 12 Stolen but recovered till I can t believe that my car was stolen. On August 15th, morning the car I am using, the Toyota company fashioned CARINA was stolen from the church yard. We both Fr James & went to the town at 10.00am & came back to Plaisance Sat 12.30pm and saw my car PKK-8177 missing. We immediately informed the police at SPARENDAAM Police Station, PLAISANCE and their quick & prompt action was really great. In no time they could guess t the right direction and got the abandoned Fr. Anil, you are robbed twice white car in the Industry area close by and within half and a hour s time caught the thieves too from the Ogle airport area. The thief (ex-orphanage boy), it seems had entered the church campus the same morning when the church cleaning work was going on and managed to walk into the residence too to pick up the spare car key. Nobody would suspect this boy as he grew here in the church immediate neighborhood for almost 16 yrs. After he picked up the spare car key, he went home close by and got dressed up as a lady & came to the church around 12 o clock noon walking as a lady..kept the gate opened & drove the car out, picked up his friend on the way and were off to be caught soon. Both of the thieves now breathe the fresh air in the prison. I got my badly damaged car repaired but had to pay thro our nose. When I briefly told this theft story to Fr. Bob at the lunch-gathering at Arrupe House, Fr Bob said, Fr Anil! you are robbed twice, first the robbers and then the car mechanic. We all laughed.. -Anil sj On sabbatical Fr.Eddy Bermingham sj is in Columbia on sabbatical. we wish him all the best and happy holidays. - Justin sj

Ursuline he SEARCH group had their first meeting for this academic year at Sacred Heart Church and the chosen theme was "Renewing all things in Christ. Fr.Edwin was the presenter whose talk was more than inspiring. It is of Timportance to highlight that his talk was characterized by a meaningful input on how we manage our time, personal reflection and group sharing. After the delicious lunch, Mrs. Michella Abraham Ali(Ministry of Amerindian Heritage) enlightened us about the varied cultures of Guyana and its richness and thus imbibed in us the spirit of belongingness to our country, Guyana. - Gohil sj An enriching cultural mass The youth team organized a cultural mass on 1st Oct at Fatima Church to emphasize the richness of our cultures. It was indeed enriching. Fr. Edwin was the main celebrant and Fr. Marlon was the con-celebrant. Godfrey, the deacon, preached an inspiring homily. Fr.Edwin and his youth team befit a well-deserved appreciation for their efforts and hard work. -Gohil sj

The Clergy Conference 2011 he Clergy conference 2011 started on 04 Oct 2011 with the retreat guided by Sr Mary Ann Clifford RSM. The retreat helped us to experience the Gospel verses, "The apostles gathered together with Jesus and reported all they had done and Ttaught. He said to them, 'Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while". Mark 3: The day of recollection and sharing helped us to review the ministries carried out through the width and breadth of our diocese. The second day was dedicated to 'The Hidden Exodus' of the faithful in the Catholic Church. Fr. Joachim D' Mello SJ presented a comprehensive report on 'The Cause and Effect of the Emergence of Various Denominations in the interior districts of Guyana". The discourses and debates held during the day helped us to open our eyes to this complex reality of people leaving the Catholic Church in Guyana. Though there are many reasons behind this hidden exodus, the following are the top five reasons given for the leaving: 1. Their religious need are not met. When people are sick, the other denominations come to their aid economically and spiritually. The priests have no time. 2. They enjoy the soul stirring religious music and interactive worship. The Catholic Church has a monotonous and passive liturgy. 3. Poverty causes some people to leave. The perks given by others attract them. 4. Bible is not used in the Catholic Church sufficiently. So the Catholics have a shallow knowledge of Faith. 5. Catholic Church is not welcoming. They find more Solidarity among the faithful in other denominations. To encounter this challenge, the priests are suggested to form lay units who will visit the sick and carry out house visiting. Lively liturgy is encouraged in the parishes. Introduction of Bible study and other activities that will deepen knowledge of Christian Faith are recommended.

the Clergy conference... The third day was dedicated to "Awareness and Action on Domestic Violence". Mr. Vidyaratha Kisson along with Mr Gino Persaud were the resource persons of the day. The input session started with questions and queries on Domestic Violence. Various forms of abuse highlighted in detail are psychological abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, intimidation and financial abuse. The details on the web of abuse propelled the floor to interact intellectually and made realize their subjective role in combating this menace. While summing up the day, Bishop Francis Alleyne OSB said, "The Bible and the Catholic faith never encourage any form of subjugation or violence. Men and Women are created in the likeness and image of God and so there is no room for subjugation". On the fourth day, from Guyana National Faith and HIV coalition, Ms Shaloakie Fernandes addressed the clergy on 'Multi-faith, multicultural and collaborative approaches to coordinating issues related to faith and the drivers of HIV issues within our communities'. Since HIV is fatal and stigmatizing, the emphasis was placed on integrated preventive measures for AIDS and removing stigmas attached to the patients from our society. After the input sessions, the participants entered into business session. The bishop updated the priests with the current status of the diocese. The issue of permanent deacons in the diocese was discussed. The diaconate vocation being part of God's special call, should be encouraged though their roles in the diocese have already been played by the extraordinary ministers in the diocese. It was announced that the Missionaries of the Institute of the Incarnate Word is to open a formation house in Hague on 22nd of October. The clergy conference 2011 came to an end with the Eucharistic celebration concelebrated by Bishop Francis Alleyne OSB with 24 priests of the diocese in the Cathedral of Immaculate conception, Brickdam. The Eucharistic fellowship was followed by a sumptuous dinner organized in the Bishop's house by the Marriage Encounter couples. Thanks to all who prayed and contributed in different ways to the success of the conference. May God bless us all -Edwin sj
