3 Toddlers & Twos This Quarter Christmas is upon us once again! The Advent and Christmas season rolls around quickly for adults; but it is a brand-new experience for the little ones in your class. Help the children enjoy the wonder of the season. Tell and retell the story of baby Jesus throughout the month of December. We have included several ways of experiencing the story through the learning centers. Each activity will be special to different children. Show pictures, tell the story, sing the songs, and act out the story all these are ways to make the story significant and meaningful for young children. In January, your children will hear and experience the story of Jesus blessing of the children. This story really highlights the theological concept and objective we have for the toddlers in your class: Jesus loves them. The center activities included in your lesson plan will help reinforce this important core belief. During the month of February, your children will hear the Bible story about Jairus and the miraculous healing of his daughter. The children will hear of the faith Jairus had in Jesus ability to help. They will have an opportunity to act out the story, sing songs, make fun art projects, and learn about the love Jesus had for the girl. This winter, your class will learn a lot about God s love for them. Take time to reflect on the ways God is showing love to you. How does God show love for you? What can you do to share that love with the children in your class? Brittany Sky Deep Blue: Toddlers & Twos resources are available in Braille on request. The Leader Guide helps the teacher/leader know how to set up the room to best prepare for the teaching and learning environment of the toddlers and two-yearolds. Included in the Leader Guide are monthly activities for unique ways to tell the Bible stories, craft activities, games, songs, and other activities that will help the children become familiar with the Bible stories. It is more important for them to have a positive experience than it is for them to have perfect projects. ASK: Why did Mary and Joseph have to go to Bethlehem? (All the people had to be counted.) SING: Their baby boy is born! Their baby boy is born! Their baby s born in Bethlehem! Their baby boy is born! ASK: What special thing happened when Mary and Joseph got to Bethlehem? (Mary had a baby boy.) What was the baby s name? (Jesus) Learning Activities The Art Cart TIP Carefully watch the children to make sure they don t put the bells in their mouths. TIP The cup needs to be paper so that the paint sticks. You can use a larger bell if you use a larger cup. TIP These Christmas bells may be used with the Christmas music in Music and Movement. CHRISTMAS BELL CUPS Supplies: 9-oz. paper cups (white or light colored); red, green, and yellow paints; pen; paper plates; paper towels; red or green chenille stems; 18-mm jingle bells (2 per child); plastic lid Purchase for each child one 9-oz. paper cup (white or light colored) and two 18-mm jingle bells. Gather red or green chenille stems (one per child). Pour red, green, and yellow paints in a shallow layer on paper plates. Fold paper towels over several times, dampen them, and place them on a plastic lid. Use a pen to poke two small holes an inch apart in the bottom of each paper cup. Give the child a paper cup, and invite her or him to use the paints to make thumbprint or fingerprint dots all over the cup. Use the paper towel pad to clean the child s thumb or finger before changing colors. When the paint dries, give the child a chenille stem. Encourage the child to put one end of the chenille stem into a hole in the cup, from the outside to the inside. Invite the child to thread a jingle bell onto the end of the stem. In order to keep the child from being poked by the chenille stem, you twist it to keep the bell in place. Repeat the process with the other end of the stem and the other hole. Pull the bells down farther so that you can work with the stem. About an inch or two up from the bells, twist the stem around itself several times. Pull the chenille stem up from the outside until the bells stop moving. On the outside of the cup, twist the chenille stem around itself several times at the cup. With the stem twisted inside the cup and outside the cup, the stem stays in place. This also gives the child a small loop to hold the bell. SAY: Ring the bells! Christmas time is coming! Ring the bells! Baby Jesus is born! 10 Deep Blue Toddlers & Twos Leader Guide December
