1 510:213: The Crusades Department of History Rutgers University Fall 2007 Erica Jo Gilles Class Schedule: Tues. and Thurs. 7:40 pm 9:00 pm Office hours: Thursday, 6:30 pm 7:30 pm and by appointment. Communication: I am generally available and responsive on during the day, Monday through Friday. If you me after 6 pm, I will get back to you the next day. If you me over the weekend, I will get back to you on Monday. This course has a Sakai site. I will post updates, links and resources there. Please make sure your address is correct and check the site frequently. Attendance: Regular attendance in class is mandatory. Any more than 2 absences will result in a 1/2 grade demotion for each absence. If you cannot come to class, contact me before hand. Get to class on time. 3 late arrivals = two absences. Quizzes: I give unannounced quizzes. If you are late, you miss the quiz and there are no make ups. You have a free pass to miss or fail 1 quiz. If you let me know ahead of time that you will miss class, you may take the quiz early. Written Assignments: There will be an in-class exam in the fourth week of class. The essay from that exam will be revised and lengthened for the first paper (4-5 pages). You will have at least two weeks for revision. A second paper (4-5 pages) is due near the end of the term. There will be a final exam during the final exam period. All assignments are due at the beginning of lecture. Any lateness will result in a 1/3 grade deduction for each day. I grade and return assignments as quickly as possible. I do, however, have a lot of students. If you hand an assignment in early, you will get it back early. Discussion: Each class meeting will incorporate discussion and small group work. This will be greatly facilitated if you bring the texts assigned for the week; if you do not own them, please bring detailed notes. Participation in discussions and group work is a substantial portion of your grade. Plagiarism: Do not plagiarize. If you have any doubt about whether acknowledgment is necessary, err on the side of caution. All cases of plagiarism will be dealt with strictly and according to university policy. Grading: Class participation: 20% Quizzes: 10% Midterm: 15% 1st Paper: 15% 2nd Paper: 20% Final: 20%
