7 Gospel Of John Treasure Hunt John, the author of the Gospel of John, was one of the 12 Disciples of Jesus. He was one of Jesusʼ three closest friends along with Peter and James. Out of the Inner three he was probably the one with the closest relationship with Jesus. He is also called John the Beloved Disciple and John the Evangelist. 2. John wrote five books in the New Testament, more than anyone else except Paul. He wrote the Gospel Of John, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John, and the Book of Revelation. John wrote the Book of Revelation while banished to the isle of Patmos. The most popular view is that this happened during the reign of the Emperor Domitian. I believe this is an error and that it was written during the reign of the <a href= >Emperor Nero</a>. 3. John was the brother of James who was later to be called James the Greater. John was the son of Zebedee and Salome. It is possible that Salome was a sister of Mary the mother of Jesus. Johnʼs mother tried to get special positions in the Kingdom of God for her sons John and James. John and James were fishermen by trade. John had been a disciple of John the Baptist before following Christ. John was the only disciple to remain near the foot of the cross. 4. John was the only disciple who died a natural death. Judas hung himself and most likely the rope broke and he fell splitting his body open. The rest of the disciples were martyred. Tradition says that his enemies tried to kill John by boiling him in oil; however, he was miraculously saved and they banished him instead.
