Sit with the passage as one would with a good friend- not just thinking or analyzing, but instead remaining in a quiet, listening spirit, so the word can nurture and challenge you. Excerpts from SNOW FALLING ON SNOW Copyright 2001 by Robert J. Wicks Used with permission of Paulist Press Call to Prayer Let us take a moment in the midst of all our activity to prepare ourselves for prayer. The Word of God Choose one of next Sunday s readings. One person reads the scripture aloud as others are attentive to a word, phrase, or theme that is meaningful to them. Allow for a minute of silent reflection. Have another person read the same scripture a second time. Faith Sharing Begin with an open ended question such as What strikes you from this reading? and/or you can use the Reflection Question found on our website or bulletin. Allow time for reflection & sharing. Closing Prayer At the end of the faith sharing, invite participants to pray aloud for any particular petitions or praises they may have. Feel free to close with: The Lord s Prayer Spontaneous prayers or A faith-based song Reflection Question for June 1 st Is my foundation in life built on rock or sand? How might I strengthen my foundation? 2 Dear Parishioners, In the Gospel of John (6:16-21) we have another dramatic incident that is rich with symbolic meaning for Christ s followers in every age. Often the meaning of John s selected incidents is not always self-evident. John depends on us to use our imaginations to discover the deeper truth. Jesus had just performed the miracle of feeding the great multitude with five barley loaves and two small fish. The throng was ready to take him by force and make him their king. Since earthly kinship was not what Jesus was about, he eluded the crowds and withdrew to the hills for prayer and rest. When he did not return by evening, the disciples assumed he had walked around the lake to Capernaum. They started to cross the lake by boat, and encountered a threatening storm. Suddenly they saw a figure walking toward them on the water. They were deathly afraid and began to cry out, but Jesus calmed their fear. It is I, he said, be not afraid. When they took him on board they reached the shore safely. Often what appears to be impending disaster and defeat is in fact an occasion in which God achieves new things in our lives. What looks like adversity may be an opportunity. God is as concerned with stilling the storms within us as those in the world about us. Though we have little control over external events in our lives, the serenity that comes from trusting God can be the difference in victory and defeat. In all situations God in Christ is with us, saying, It is I. Be not afraid. Msgr. Luca THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK It is always the season for the old to learn. Aeschylus ( B.C.) Among the many ministries here at Saint Louis there is one that is looking for additional helpers. Once a month Saint Louis parishioners feed 700 people at Our Daily Bread a wonderful place in Baltimore city where poor and homeless people literally sit down for a served meal. No questions are asked about their status. They are simply treated with dignity and respect in an environment of Christian love and compassion. You can help by preparing chicken pieces according to a simple recipe. Members of our parish prepare the meal in their homes as they would prepare chicken for their family and then drop them off at the home of Mary Agnes Lewis (6005 Ten Oaks Road across from our parish cemetery) on the 2 nd Monday of each month. Available volunteers then take the food to the facility located next to the Basilica in Baltimore and serve the meal on the 2 nd Tuesday of each month. For additional information about how you can help, call Mary Agnes Lewis at This is a wonderful way in which a family can work together in preparing a wholesome meal for some of Hungry for something more spiritual? Is church a little too routine? Sometimes wonder about the relevance of Jesus? Try a dynamic weekend away with the guy or the gals: satisfy the hunger, rise above the routine, answer the questions. 5 SCHOOL NEWS ANNUAL APPEAL REACHES NEARLY $56K! With six weeks to go, we have received almost $56,000 in gifts and pledges to help us defray our school's operating expenses this year. For this, we are truly grateful and thank all of you who have contributed. With that said, we would like to encourage you to PUT YOUR NAME ON THE LIST, and support the school in the generous way you support all parish causes. St. Louis's ability to provide an excellent education does not happen by accident, and it does not happed based on tuition payments alone. We rely heavily on fundraising to meet our ever-rising budget expenses. So far, out of almost 4000 parishioners, less than 71 have contributed to the appeal. This number is less than half of those that contributed last year. There may be many reasons for this drop in participation, but we are hopeful that, with this reminder, the numbers will go up. When our magnificent church was in the construction phase, we lost a significant portion of our enrollment in Kindergarten and first grade that year, as well as some attrition in the upper grades. Now that construction is completed and we have this beautiful new facility, enrollment has bounced back. We anticipate that kindergarten and first grade will be full next year, as well our new preschool program. While all of that is great news, the school still has many openings in those grades that originally lost enrollment during construction, as once those students went elsewhere, it was difficult to get them back. This will likely be the situation until those classes graduate. Hence, our need to continually fundraise to overcome that loss of enrollment revenue. We cannot do it alone. We would like to get our participation numbers all the way around. Won't you please consider a small tax-deductible gift to your own parish school? Thank you, in advance for Believing in St. Louis School. We are truly grateful! CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR GRADUATES!!! Next Saturday, May 31st our 8 th graders will graduate and become alumnae of St. Louis School! We are very proud of the Class of 2008 and we wish them much success in high school! The money that we raised from the sale of quilt raffle tickets will benefit the children/families of St. John the Evangelist parish in Gonaives, Haiti, our sister parish. This is one small way our First Communicants chose to share their love & show that they are Christ s disciples. A very special thank you is extended to Bonnie Chopyk who assembled and quilted this year s precious quilt. The lucky winner of our quilt is Joshua Goodman. Joshua attends Saturday morning religious education. He is a student in Mrs. Faulstich s class. Congratulations to Joshua and the Goodman family! Four other lucky winners, Matthew Greenlee, Debbie Dorsch, Jamie Romer and Robert Goyena, each won one of the candles that were carried forward and lit on the altar during our First Communion celebrations. 6 YOUTH DIRECTOR S COMMENTS Are any of you runners? One of the reasons I have chosen walking is because the world goes by too fast when you run. When I hike, I can really take in nature and the whole environment around me. (The other reason is that my knees would give out!) Anyway, as is my custom, I recently started a hike on the Trolley trail from Catonsville to Ellicott City. Although it has few hills, once I got to Ellicott City, I found them! My wanderings took me up (and up and up!) past the Roger Carter Rec Center to the Courthouse, and then back down to the town. As I was descending to Main Street, I came across an older woman walking her dog. Thinking her house was the one directly in front of her (with a yard that ended in 3 directions with a sheer cliff!), I made the comment that I hoped her family doesn t sleepwalk! She laughed and explained that it was her neighbor s house. Noticing an empty water bottle in my hand, she offered to recycle it in her bin. She then talked about being a local to Ellicott City since 1980, having come from Iowa. We talked for awhile about what it means to be a local Pride in your heritage and history, getting to know the people and traditions, feeling at home. At the end of our conversation, she offered another bottle of water to me. In this fast paced world, where busyness is the way and focusing on yourself seems to be the key to getting it done, it was refreshing to just stop and talk. Some people say that the minimum for Christians is to be nice, to recognize the presence of Jesus in each person you meet. Are you aware of Jesus when He serves you at a restaurant (or cleans your table afterwards)? Are you aware that the person who you have the most trouble with at school (teacher or student) could actually have Christlike qualities? Is that person who you pass on the street or in the grocery store just a stranger or possibly a way for Jesus to reveal Himself to you? As school continues to end, I pray that you might see the face of Jesus in those you meet. MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL CATHOLIC YOUTH MINISTRY May Confirmation Retreat Please pray for those attending.
