2 Our Sacred Journeys Our sacred journeys are each unique and awesome as we discover God s calling to enter into a faith experience with him. However, in the busyness of our modern society, we sometimes find it challenging to do so on a daily basis. In light of this challenge, pilgrimages have become a very popular way to seek spiritual understanding. I remember very profound experiences hiking to 13,800 feet on the Camino de Inca in Peru and experiencing God s powerful presence in Ephesus and the House of the Virgin Mary in Turkey. Both have played a role in my sacred journey. But did you know that you can have an urban pilgrimage right in the city of Edmonton? I have had equally profound experiences leading Finding God in Nature and walking the labyrinth at Providence Renewal Centre. The key, I find, in our search for deeper spiritual understanding and growth is having an environment of quietude and sacred space where we can truly enter into a place of stillness and listen to God. Providence Renewal Centre offers a truly sacred space to continue your sacred journey. Perhaps you might be interested in an urban pilgrimage through a quiet day away, centering prayer, understanding suffering, becoming more merciful, spiritual book club, or a day away in nature. We invite you and welcome you to join us with an open mind and open heart to be a part of your sacred journey. Catharine King Executive Director cking@providencerenewal.ca Last summer I journeyed, on foot, 285 kilometers of the Camino in northern Spain with eight other companions. Our pilgrimage walk was both challenging and exhilarating. It reminded me of our lives. At times my backpack felt very heavy, which brought to mind people who are sick and suffering, and I would pray for them. Over shared meals with great conversation and much laughter I experienced the joy of having friends to share life with. It was a sacred time a sacred journey! It was a time of renewal and reconnection. Like this pilgrimage, we need to make time and have places to go that remind us that our lives are a sacred journey. At Providence Renewal Centre, we are such a place, waiting to welcome you and to walk with you on your sacred journey. Evening Lecture Thursday, March 3 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm Fr. Richard Leonard We witness to our faith within a culture that is increasingly hostile to religious belief. Multiple voices compete for our attention. This lecture positively confronts this new context which forms us: looking at the common ground; the importance of the freedom to believe or not; that not all Christians are the same; that we do not have to choose between science and faith; the centrality of religious experience; and the importance of our image of God. We will also look at some answers to some of the major questions being posed to us today and the stories of how heroic Christians inspire us to keep living our faith. $25.00 Richard Leonard, SJ is a Jesuit of the Australian Province and director of the Australian Catholic Film Office, ad consultant to the Australian Catholic Bishops Media Committee, and a film critic for all the major newspapers in Australia. A holder of a doctorate in cinema studies, he has lectured all over the world 5

These words of Pope Francis will guide us on our journey of Holy Week where, as a people of faith, we will contemplate the mystery of mercy expressed profoundly in the paschal mystery of Jesus suffering, dying, and rising. This will help us consider how we are making our homes and communities the field hospital Pope Francis talks about. As we journey together through Palm Sunday and into the Easter liturgies we will use input, sacred scripture, silence, ritual, music, story, and poetry to explore how we can make the face of God s mercy more visible in our world. 8 DAYS AWAY IN NATURE Tuesdays, May 10 and June 7 NATURE AND SPIRITUAL WELLNESS Finding God in Nature, 10:00 am to 12:00 noon, Cathy King St. Francis of Assisi understood well how God speaks to us in nature. Come on a nature walk in the river valley and spend some time with the Creator in creation. The walk through the woods will include reflections and sharing to help us enter into the experience of God more deeply. Come with an open heart, good walking shoes, and comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing. Savor the smells, listen to the birds, feel the sun and the air enjoy the beauty! Look deep into nature and then you will understand everything better. Albert Einstein Walking the Labyrinth Mindfully, 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, Debbie Doornbos Give yourself the gift of slowing down by walking the labyrinth mindfully. To be mindful is to live in the present moment. It allows us to be aware of our body moving, to feel the wind on our face, to hear the birds chirping, and to smell the air. The labyrinth, when we walk intentionally and in the present moment, is the most beautiful prayer. It quiets our busy mind and inspires creative thinking. As we walk slowly to the center of the labyrinth, we can move interiorly into our own inner center where God waits in silence. This time will include readings, reflections, and sharing. Mindfulness is paying attention on purpose non-judgmentally in the present moment as if your life depended on it. Jon Kabat-Zinn $15.00 for each morning or afternoon session $40.00 for each full day full day includes buffet lunch Cathy King MBA is an organizational leadership and education specialist. She has a passion for nature and feels closest to God in the outdoors. Cathy loves mentoring and coaching others in their personal and professional growth. 9 AGING GRACEFULLY Exploring the Gift of Years Wednesday, April 6 10:00 am to 3:30 pm Sandra Prather CARING FOR OURSELVES Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be. In a culture that glorifies youth, many today would not agree with these words of the poet Robert Browning. Getting older is often seen as synonymous with loss: of health, status, freedom, and meaning. However, embracing one s advancing years can be an exciting adventure according to Sister Joan Chittister. In her book The Gift of Years: Growing Older Gracefully [2008], she passionately lays out the blessings and beauty of embracing our senior years. On this retreat day we will draw on the wisdom found in Sister Joan s book, exploring the possibilities and opportunities that come with one s advancing years. $65.00 includes buffet lunch Register by March 21 and save $5.00 Sandra Prather, B.Ed., MTh, is a facilitator and teacher in the areas of faith and spirituality. She draws upon her theological training and faith perspective to break open the ordinary so that we might know God amidst the pots and pans. Sandra is the former executive director of Star of the North Retreat Centre. She and her husband Bob are blessed with four children and ten grandchildren. A QUIET DAY AWAY Monday, March 14, Monday, April 11, Wednesday, May 18 9:30 am to 3:30 pm Debbie Doornbos In our fast-paced world there are many demands on our time and energy which can leave us feeling tired and discouraged. Stepping away for one day and entering the quiet can give us the physical and spiritual boost we need to keep us energized and able to cope effectively with our daily challenges. This day will begin in prayer with others; the rest of the day is yours. Reflection/prayer suggestions will be available. A single bedroom is provided. Ask for details about extending your stay. $40.00 per session includes buffet lunch Register and pay for two or more sessions at once and pay $35.00 per session Spiritual direction can be arranged in advance for an additional fee. Come to me, all you that are weary and I will give you rest. Matt. 11:28 9
