T HE FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT S UNDAY, MARCH 18, 2018 FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 508 WEST DAVIS STREET BURLINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA

Melodious Accord: A Concert of Praise This Concert of Praise is entirely based upon hymn tunes and texts found in the first five editions of a shape-note hymnal entitled Genuine Church Music, published in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The first edition appeared in 1832, and the fifth twenty years later. The editor was Joseph Funk, a Mennonite farmer, schoolmaster and musician. Many of these hymnals were published in the United States in the first half of the nineteenth century. They borrowed extensively from one another. Songs of William Billings came from New England through the coastal cities, and then to the mountain counties, where Appalachian folksongs and spirituals completed an exchange. Few composers are given credit for their work. Many lovely tunes are completely anonymous. But the texts are often well known. Isaac Watts is particularly well represented. Shape notes were a device to aid in teaching music reading. In the earliest books, four shape notes (a triangle, a square, a circle and a diamond) were used to correspond to the syllables fa, sol, la and mi. Later the system expanded to seven shapes-and-syllables, and there are still hymnals and gospel songs published in these editions. Joseph Funk was one of many itinerant song leaders, who travelled many miles leading singing schools in villages on the frontier, selling his books as he went, and collecting new tunes for the next edition. Hymn singing was a principal social activity for these hard-working, religious people, and it is easy to see why when we hear the variety and beauty of these songs. We hear formal, classic music in the opening chorus Zion, the familiar Come, Ye Disconsolate, and the charming duet, Spring. There are joyful rhythmic dances in Be Joyful in God, and Zion s Light. Folk tunes are heard, and soaring modal melodies, as well as a cheerful gospel hymn, The Parting Hymn, which came from Wales. And there are two magnificent congregational hymns, Tamworth (Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah) and Union (God Moves in a Mysterious Way), which deserve to be reinstated with honor in our contemporary hymnals. This cantata is divided into four movements, Welcome, Old Testament, New Testament, and Farewells (The Promised Land), with the hymn Union as a fitting conclusion. May its performance remind us of the riches of our newly-discovered heritage of folk hymns, and serve to unite us with Melodious Accord in His praise. -Alice Parker

G ATHERING AROUND THE W ORD WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us prepare our hearts to worship God. MUSIC FOR PREPARATION Two Hymntunes by Lowell Mason ( ) arr. Christian McIvor (b. 1982) Bethany (Nearer My God, to Thee) Uxbridge (The Heavens Declare Thy Glory, Lord) CALL TO WORSHIP Trust in the Lord at all times, O People; God is a refuge for us. God is our rock and our salvation; we shall not be shaken. God is good and in God s work we find our strength. We sing of all God s wonderful works! We give thanks and praise to the Lord! Please join in reading aloud those parts of the service printed in bold. *PROCESSIONAL HYMN NO. 396 Brethren, We Have Met to Worship CALL TO CONFESSION SILENT PRAYER OF CONFESSION CHORAL RESPONSE Come, Ye Disconsolate (Melodious Accord) Kenneth Lee, baritone Come, ye disconsolate, where er you languish: Come, at the mercy seat fervently kneel; Here bring your wounded hearts, here tell your anguish, Earth hath no sorrow that heaven cannot heal. Joy to the desolate, light of the straying, Hope when all others die, fadeless and pure. Here speaks the Comforter, in mercy saying: Earth hath no sorrow that heaven cannot cure. Here see the bread of life, see waters flowing Forth from the throne of God pure from above; Come to the feast prepared, Come, ever knowing: Earth hath no sorrow that heaven cannot heal. -Thomas Moore ASSURANCE OF PARDON HOLY MANNA arranged by Alice Parker When this symbol (*) precedes an element of the service, please rise in body or spirit. We lay before God our own sins, the sins and brokenness of our fellow worshipers, the church universal, and the world. The astoundingly good news of our reconciliation to God through Jesus Christ frees our tongues to sing mighty praise to God.

CHORAL RESPONSE Be Joyful in God (Melodious Accord) Chancel Choir arranged by Alice Parker Be joyful in God, all ye lands of the earth, Oh serve him with gladness and fear: Exult in his presence with music and mirth, With love and devotion draw near. Jehovah is God, and Jehovah alone Who reigns with his Son above all, And we are his people, his scepter we own, His sheep, and we follow his call. We exchange reconciling words among the people of God. Rather than shaking hands we invite you to greet each other with the words, The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. O enter his gates with thanksgiving and song, Your vow in his temple proclaim. His praise with melodious accordance prolong, And bless his adorable Name; For good is the Lord, inexpressibly good, And we are the works of his hand, His mercy and truth from eternity stood, And shall to eternity stand! -James Montgomery *PASSING THE PEACE, LOVE, AND JOY OF CHRIST TO OTHERS The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION LISTENING FOR THE WORD MELODIOUS ACCORD: A CONCERT OF PRAISE arranged by Alice Parker (b. 1926) I. WELCOME House of Our God (ZION) Patty Phillips, soprano Bill Snedden, tenor Nan Wooten, alto Kenneth Lee, baritone House of our God, with cheerful anthems ring, While all our lips and hearts his goodness sing: With sacred joy his wondrous deeds proclaim, let every tongue be vocal with his name; The Lord is good, his mercy never ending. His goodness in perpetual showers descending. Thou, earth, enlightened by his rays divine, Pregnant with grass and corn and oil and wine. Crowned with his goodness, let thy nations meet,

And lay themselves at his paternal feet; With grateful love that liberal hand confessing, Which through each heart diffuseth every blessing. Zion, enriched with his distinguished grace, Blessed with the rays of thine Immanuel s face; Zion, Jehovah s portion and delight, Graven on his hand, and hourly in his sight, In sacred strains exalt that grace excelling, Which makes thine humble hill his chosen dwelling. Amen. Lord, I Approach Thy Mercy Seat (BURFORD) Lord, I approach Thy mercy seat, where Thou dost answer prayer; There humbly fall beneath Thy feet, for none doth perish there. Thy promise is my only plea; with this I venture nigh; Thou callest burdened souls to thee, and such, O Lord, am I. Bowed down beneath a load of sin, by Satan sorely pressed, By war without and fear within, I come to thee for rest. Be thou my Shield, my hiding place; that, sheltered near thy side, I may my fierce accuser face, and tell him, thou hast died. II. OLD TESTAMENT *PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 119:9-16 Stanza 1: Chancel Choir Stanzas 2-4: All KEDRON We listen for what God is saying to God s people through scripture, song, and sermon.

The Voice of My Beloved Sounds (SPRING) Patty Philipps and Lilla Keith, sopranos The voice of my beloved sounds, while o er the mountain top he bounds. He flies exulting o er the hills, and all my soul with transport fills. Gently doth he chide my stay, Rise, my love, and come away. The scattered clouds are fled at last, the rain is gone, the winter s past. The lovely vernal flowers appear, the warbling choir enchants our ear; Now with sweetly pensive moan, coos the turtle dove alone. Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah (TAMWORTH) Guide me, O thou great Jehovah, pilgrim through this barren land: I am weak, but thou art mighty, hold me with thy powerful hand; Bread of heaven, bread of heaven, feed me till I want no more. Open now the crystal fountain whence the healing streams do flow; Let the fiery, cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through: Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer, be thou still my Strength and Shield. Feed me with the heavenly manna in the barren wilderness; Be my sword and shield and banner, be my robe of righteousness; Fight and conquer, fight and conquer, all my foes by sov reign grace. When I tread the verge of Jordan let my anxious fears subside; For to death and hell s destruction, land me safe on Canaan s side: Songs of praises, songs of praises I will ever sing to thee. -W. Williams, 1745, trans. P. Williams, 1771 III. NEW TESTAMENT GOSPEL READING: John 12:20-33 Large Print Pew Bible, page 130 Pew Bible, pages The Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, O Christ. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross (RETIREMENT) Fredda Payne, alto When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of Glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast save in the death of Christ my God; All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood.

Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small, Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all. -Isaac Watts, 1707 Come, O Thou Traveler Unknown (VERNON) Dan Callaway, tenor Come, O thou traveler unknown, whom still I hold but cannot see; My company before is gone, and I am left alone with thee; With thee all night I mean to stay, and wrestle till the break of day. In vain thou strugglest to get free, I never will unloose my hold: Art thou the man that died for me? The secret of thy love unfold; Wrestling, I will not let thee go, till I thy Name, thy nature know. Tis Love! tis Love! Thou diedst for me, I hear thy whisper in my heart. The morning breaks, the shadows flee; pure universal love thou art. To me, to all, thy mercies move, thy nature and thy Name is Love. -Charles Wesley, 1742 O How Happy Are They (NEW CONCORD) O how happy are they, who their Savior obey, And have laid up their treasure above, Oh! what tongue can express the sweet comfort and peace Of a soul in its earliest love. Twas a heaven below my Redeemer to know: And the angels could do nothing more Than to fall at his feet and the story repeat, And the Savior of sinners adore. Jesus all the day long was my joy and my song; Oh! that more his salvation might see; He hath loved me, I cried, He hath suffered and died, To redeem such a rebel as me. Now my remnant of days would I spend in his praise, Who hath died me from death to redeem; Whether many or few, all my days are his due; May they all be devoted to him. -Charles Wesley, 1749

IV. FAREWELLS NEW TESTAMENT READING: Revelation 7: 9-17 Large Print Pew Bible, page 303 Pew Bible, pages The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. That Glorious Day Is Drawing Nigh (ZION S LIGHT) That glorious day is drawing nigh, when Zion s light shall come; She shall arise and shine on high, bright as the rising sun. The north and south their sons resign, and earth s foundations bend; Cloth d as a bride, Jerusalem all glorious shall descend. The King who wears the splendid crown, the azure s flaming bow; The holy city shall bring down, to bless his Church below. When Zion s bleeding, conqu ring King shall sin and death destroy, The morning stars shall join to sing, and Zion s shout for joy! How Sweet to Reflect (EDEN OF LOVE) Dan Callaway, tenor How sweet to reflect on the joys that await me In yon blissful region the haven of rest. Where glorified spirits with welcome shall greet me, And lead me to mansions prepared for the blest; Encircled in light, and with glory unshrouded, My happiness perfect, my mind s sky unclouded, I ll bathe in the ocean of pleasure unbounded, And range with delight through the Eden of love. When angelic legions with harps tuned celestial, Harmoniously join in the concert of praise, The saints, as they flock from the regions terrestrial, In hallelujahs their voices will raise. Then songs of the Lamb shall re-echo through heaven, My soul will respond, to Immanuel be given. All glory, all honor, all might and dominion, Who brought us through grace to the Eden of love. How Pleasant Thus to Dwell Below (THE PARTING HYMN) Patty Phillips, soprano Bill Snedden, tenor Nan Wooten, alto Kenneth Lee, baritone How pleasant thus to dwell below in fellowship of love: And though we part, tis bliss to know the good shall meet above.

Oh! that will be joyful, to meet to part no more. On Canaan s happy shore, and sing the everlasting song With those who ve gone before. The children who have loved the Lord will hail their teacher there. And teachers gain the rich reward of all their toil and care. Oh! that will be joyful, to meet to part no more. On Canaan s happy shore, and sing the everlasting song With those who ve gone before. Yes, happy thought, when we are free from earthly grief and pain; In heaven we shall each other see, and never part again. Oh! that will be joyful, to meet to part no more. On Canaan s happy shore, and sing the everlasting song With those who ve gone before. God Moves in a Mysterious Way (UNION) God moves in a mysterious way his wonders to perform; He plants his footsteps in the sea, and rides upon the storm. Deep in unfathomable mines of never failing skill, He treasures up his vast designs, and works his sov reign will. Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take; the clouds ye so much dread Are big with mercy, and shall break in blessings on your head. Judge not the Lord by feeble sense, but trust him for his grace; Behind a frowning providence he hides a smiling face. 13 RECONCILING RACE AND OUR CALL AS CHRISTIANS: Led by the Social Justice Committee through March 25 at 9:45 a.m. in the Witherspoon Room Differences abound among humankind, and yet all are created in the image of God. Throughout scripture and in everyday life, our eyes witness sinner and saint, equity and injustice, privilege and hindrance, pain and pleasure. Reconciling dualities, really the pluralities, across the spectrum of human belief, behavior and culture pose some of the greatest challenges to living as a person of faith. When we combine the beauty of faith and the vision of the gospel, what comes into focus, particularly in the context of an unjust world, where inequity persists? How do you see and respond to the varied colors and calls of God's beloved people? Come join us as we begin exploration of what it means to undertake a socially compassionate response to the greatest commandment: to love God and our neighbor. WALK THROUGH ZAMBIA: Have you seen all these beautiful pictures in the Black and White Hall? Trina Holt made this beautiful Walk Through Zambia gallery to help share with you the experiences of our Zambia Mission Team this January. We re excited to tell you more about the trip at a reception Sunday, April 8 from 3:00-4:00 p.m. Meet us in the Black and White Hall for snacks and coffee and stories that will stir your hearts. CHILDREN'S SPRING MUSICAL: Our Carol and Covenant Choirs will present their Spring Musical Sunday, March 25 at 5:30 p.m. in Calvin Hall. Table for Five Thousand, by Allen Pote and Tom Long, tells the inspiring account of Jesus feeding the five thousand. This story reveals how one young boy with five loaves of bread and two fish, along with his apparent willingness to share, led to an event so startling that members of the crowd wanted to proclaim Jesus as King. Through this musical our children remind us that the most humble among us can do great things with God s help. Join us for this great story! FEED YOUR SOUL: 508 PARTNERSHIP We started as folks from First Baptist Church on 508 Apple St. and First Presbyterian Church on 508 Davis St. who wanted to read and discuss "Black Poetry" by Dudley Randall. It has developed into wonderful friendships and a safe place to talk about tough issues. We continue to feed our souls, and invite you to gather with us. Join the 508 Partnership at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesdays in April as we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with an in depth analysis and discussion of the "Letter from Birmingham Jail."
