1 First United Methodist Church of Clewiston 331 W. Osceola Avenue Clewiston, FL (863) Thanksgiving Day (and any day) is a time to reflect and be thankful for all that God has given us: Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. Any whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. 2 PowerLines / November, 2017 Page 2 Jeff s Corner OUR CASE FOR CHRIST Recently at our church we showed the movie, The Case for Christ, based on the book by journalist Lee Strobel. I read the book years ago and I still think it is one of the best and compelling testimonies of a person s journey to faith in Jesus Christ. If you have not read the book or seen the movie, let me offer this short summary. Lee Strobel s wife had accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior in a household where faith was a non-factor. In an attempt to save his wife from making a terrible mistake, Lee set out as a journalist to disprove the claims concerning Jesus, especially regarding his death on the cross and his resurrection. After much research, described in detail throughout the book, Lee had no choice but to accept the truth that led him to accept Jesus Christ as Lord. Before this exploration into the facts by Lee, he was an active atheist. Today, he has been transformed through his faith in Jesus. The Case for Christ is a must read for every Christian in the 21 st century because it is a culturally relevant witness to the ancient authority of the Holy Bible. The case we present for Christ to others and the world should be embraced by us if we are to make a difference for the Kingdom of God here on earth today. It is my belief that every problem we face in the world today could and should be addressed through the lens of faith we have in Jesus. Lee Strobel has continued to mature spiritually in his walk with Christ as is evidenced by the fruit in his life. Lee co-authored a book called, Contagious Christianity (we have used this book) that helps others share their faith in Jesus. Additionally, he has written numerous books about Christianity that inform and help us grow in our faith. He is using his God-given talents to grow the kingdom. What gifts and graces has God blessed you with and how are you using them for the kingdom? How did you come to faith in Jesus and how would you present your case for Christ if; a) someone asked you about Him or b) you saw an opportunity to encourage someone to find faith in Jesus? We begin to answer these questions by praying for God s help in putting our story of faith together. Write down what your life was like before asking Jesus into your heart and what your life looks like now. Hopefully you will begin to see a transformation taking place as you continue to practice your faith. Remember that we are a work in progress and as we build and share our case for Christ, God will be with us each step of the way. Jesus said, 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Matthew 28:19-20) God bless you and keep you! With Christ s love, Pastor Jeff
3 PowerLines / November, 2017 Page 3 This month, the children will be giving THANKS to someone new every week and tell them why they are being thanked. We are in need of a new small Christmas tree for the Children s Church area as we will be making decorations for it. If you find it in your heart to donate one, please drop it off at the office. Our Deep Blue Bible Verse for November is The Lord sees into the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7) and we will continue studying 1 Samuel 16:14-23 about David the Musician. We still need help for one Sunday each month for Children s Church. Please step forward and help us out with your time and talents. 5 PowerLines / November, 2017 Page 5 ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES The Administrative Council met on October 24, 2017, in the Trinity room to discuss the missions and operations of our church and received the following reports: Pastor s Report: Pastor Jeff reminded the members of the upcoming Annual Charge Conference at 3:00 pm Sunday, November 5 at Carlson UMC in Labelle, FL. Pastor Jeff stated that this year s Thanksgiving Dinner is cancelled due to lack of volunteers. He suggested that the church support Compassion Avenue by providing funds for turkeys to be distributed. Ardis suggested that U.S. Sugar (Jennifer Black) be contacted and asked for their aid in donating some turkeys. There was mention of using some funds out of the Outreach Mission s and/or Pastor s Discretionary account for this purpose. The campus will be decorated for Advent on Saturday, November 25 at 9:00 am (Saturday just before the first Sunday in Advent). Rev. Rini Hernandez has been made aware of the campus insurance claim that has been filed with the Conference to repair the damage caused by IRMA. The church properties sustained damage to the WC Owen rental property, the LEC and the church office, with the WC Owen property being a top priority; the rest of the campus is also being evaluated. Pastor Jeff stated that our church may also need financial help depending on what happens with giving for this project (insurance claim proceeds and timing of work and its completion) and also suggested that fundraisers be held in order to raise funds to assist in this project. We are speaking with the United Methodist Foundation and working with both Trustees and Finance Teams. Pastor Jeff applied for a $15,000 grant on the church s behalf in order to help with filling the youth leader position. Both the grant and budgeted dollars will be combined to compensate and train an IGNITE youth leader. Pastor Jeff made us aware of the closing of Bowling Green UMC s doors due in part to irreparable property damage by recent hurricane(s) and not being able to make new disciples. He reminded us of the importance of being a mission-minded, focused and driven church. Pastor Jeff will be in Dallas, Texas for 4 days in early November for continued education. Pastor Dave Mullins from Carlson UMC will be on-call should any pastoral emergencies arise. Joanne Stiles received her piano, stand, chair and headphones on 10/24/2017 and she is very grateful. She s adjusting to her new surroundings very well and sends her regards. SPRC: Bobby suggested that Pastor Jeff s 2018 salary be increased by $450.00, making his new salary $62,130. Pastor Jeff s health supplement will increase by $1,000/annually; Continuing Education will be increased by $ The 3% total compensation increase motion was carried and accepted. Bobby reminded the members that October is Pastor Appreciation month. Worship: Pastor Jeff reported that the expanded camera system installed in the Sanctuary has some technical issues that still need to be addressed. LJ is planning a Cantata to be presented on Sunday s service on December, 24 at 10:00 am and will hold a Christmas Eve service that evening at 6:00 pm. Missions: Sandy reported that their first Mission fund raising meal, held on Wednesday, October 18, was a success. Holiday pies will be baked on Friday, November 17, and Saturday November 18 and will be available for pickup on November 18 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Proceeds will benefit the Agape Home Mission. Trustees: Ninette reported that the new exterior lights still need to be installed. Church members will be notified of an opportunity to assist in assembling the lights to assist the Trustees with this project. Zaihdeé contacted the church s AC repair company and the condensate pan has been repaired in the AV rack room. The Arcade property suffered two broken windows during IRMA. Replacement windows have been ordered and will be installed. The Pastor has relocated his office into the back room of the Church office building due to rain damage from IRMA. This move is expected to be permanent due to the very poor condition of the room previously used as the pastor s office. Sandy Stitt and Tommy Perry contacted the owner of Cross Training Ministries to review expectations of the care of campus landscaping. Ninette is working to find a roofing contractor that will replace the WC Owen roof along with the roof in the LEC. Ardis suggested calling David s Carpentry, and Glades Roofing. Ninette also reported that Bill is doing an awesome job around the campus. FINANCE: Tommy discussed the Finance reports. He reported that Benevolences are 100% paid through October. MEMBERSHIP: Carol compiled a list of inactive members. No members will be removed at this time; they will be contacted in the next coming months. Pastor Jeff offered a closing prayer. RD Williams

Trustees of FUMC have been quite busy lately trying to get repair estimates for our Hurricane Irma damages to the campus. Hopefully we can get a local company to getter done as out of our area contractors are staying in their locales. We had lots of roofs damaged and they are presently leaking onto ceiling tiles. The new exterior light fixtures should be installed some time in November so we will be well lighted once again. Irma also took a few of those off the walls. Trees have been trimmed and carted away, debris has been removed from the campus and we are just trying to get everything back to normal!
