3 M onday: Introduction This week you will begin studying the New Testament verse by verse. You will follow the historical events from before the creation of the heaven and earth (Genesis 1) to their restoration (a new heaven and earth Revelation 21). But in order to fully understand the specific details of the Bible you first need to see how it all fits together. Separate the following letters into words to decipher what God expects a good student to do when studying the Bible. StudytoshewthyselfapproveduntoGod, aworkmanthatneedethnottobeashamed, rightlydividingthewordoftruth. 2Tim 2:15 One of the first divisions you need to make in the Bible is deciding whom a particular scripture is written to Write the correct words from 1 Corinthians 10:32 above the appropriate picture to show the three different groups of people the Bible is written to. By distinguishing between whom a passage is written specifically to you will be able to decide whether or not it should be applied literally and directly to you (see chart of page 14). Mark the following statements true or false based on whom the references are written to). Genesis 17:10 Jewish males (Abraham s descendants through Isaac) were commanded by God to be circumcised. 4 Acts 15:24 Christian males (NT believers) were commanded by God to be circumcised. 5 Read the first five verses of each book (or the indicated verse) to determine whether it is written to Jews, Gentiles, Church or??? (if not identified). STUDY Through the Bible Introduction (13.1) 3

7 T hursday: Gospels compared/contrasted The four gospels are actually Old Testament fulfillment until the death of Jesus. But why are there four gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John? Why not only one? And do they differ? Do they contradict? Yes they differ but no they don t contradict. They are four different viewpoints of Christ. But taken together they give a portrait of Jesus that no one book alone could do. Fill in the blanks with the correct word(s) from the scriptures below to show how the gospels interrelate. 1. Matt 2:2 2. Luke 22:48 3. John 20:31 4. John 1:1 5. Matt 1:1 6. Luke 1: Luke 3:38 8. Jer 23:5 9. Zech 6: John 1: Matt 28:6 12. In Matthew, for example, Jesus Christ is presented as the promised king and Messiah of Israel. Consequently Matthew's message to Israel and the world is: Behold your king. Mark, on the other hand, presents him as a servant. And STUDY Through the Bible Introduction (13.1) 7
8 that's the reason there's no genealogy in Mark because a servant s genealogy didn t matter. When you come to Luke's gospel you see Christ presented as the perfect man (Son of man) walking among the people of the world. In the gospel of John God becomes man, in the eternal Son of God, Jesus Christ. So his gospel was written to establish the deity of Jesus Christ, who lived in a human body. He is not half-god, half-man, He is fully God and fully man. And so the genealogy that John presents isn t traced back to some human. It goes right back to eternity, and says that Jesus was there when time began. That's his genealogy. He didn't start; he always was. So John presents Jesus as God. The gospels not only interrelate to show a full picture of Jesus but they also fit together with the epistles (letters) which give God s interpretation to the church. Fill in the blanks with the correct word(s) from the scriptures below to show how the gospels and epistles complement each other. 1. 2Tim 3:16 2. Matt 21:11 3. Heb 4:14 4. Heb 9: Matt 5:1 6. 13 S unday: The good old days Some people today believe Christians are still subject to the Old Testament laws. But that s nothing new it happened back in early Christianity as well. According to Gal 6:12 what OT custom did the Jews want Christians to follow? 148 But each of the New Testament parallels carries an advantage over its Old Testament counterpart. Use the given scripture reference to fill in the blanks. Israel (God s wife) can be 149 but the church (Jesus bride) can t be. (Isa 50:1) The 1 st Adam brought and 150 unto 151. (Rom 5:21) (Rom 5:12) but the last Adam (Jesus) brought As those that are alive from the dead, Christians are no longer under the 152 but under. 153 (Rom 6:15) Christians don t need to approach the mercy seat with fear of 154 (Lev 16:13) but can come 155 to the throne of grace. (Heb 4:16) Instead of God s holy Spirit being with you (and thus able to come and go) he 156 in you permanently. (2Tim 1:14) Instead of animal blood to temporarily cover sin the blood of Jesus 157 us permanently. (1Jn 1:7) Fill in vs (below) with things Paul says we have liberty from in Christ. Fill in vs with things Paul warns against. Fill in vs with Paul s summary of our liberty in Christ. Fill in vs. 23 with Paul explanation of why these things seem wise. Col 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in, 158 or in, 159 or in respect of an, 160 or of the, 161 or of the : Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. 18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary 163 and, 164 intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19 And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God. 20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, 21 ( not; 165 not; 166 not; Which all are to perish STUDY Through the Bible Introduction (13.1) 13
14 with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? 23 Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in, 168 and, 169 and ; 170 not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh. Conclusion Jesus illustrated the fact that old and new things don t mix in Luke 5: What two things did he use to illustrate this concept (1 st column)? What goes wrong if old and new are mixed (2 nd column)? Illustration Problem An even worse combination occurs when you try to mix the deeds of the old man (before salvation) and the new man (after salvation). Paul addresses this problem in Col 3:8-17. What needs to be put off and what needs to be put on? Old man: put off 175 New man: put on 176 According to vs. 10 what is the key to being a new man? 177 According to vs what are the results of being renewed? Introduction (13.1) STUDY Through the Bible
