Term 4 Week 3 NEWSLETTER Website: 31 October, 2012 Dear Parents, ST. BRIGID S CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL 25 Bayview Road, Officer Vic Telephone: (03) Fax (03) Term 2 Week 8 NEWSLETTER 11 th June 2014 Dear Parents, Love cannot remain by itself it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action and that action is service. Mother Teresa Every year at this time the Catholic Church together with their schools makes a special response in prayer and donation for the needs of others by supporting and promoting the St. Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal for blankets and non-perishable items. This Appeal is an important initiative not only because it makes a real difference to the lives of people in need, but also provides a valuable opportunity for our students to continue to develop compassion for others and be active in their Parish community. A small community of generous, thoughtful people can make a huge contribution to those who are struggling and need a helping hand. Fr. Jeff Klenyjans will celebrate Mass for the Sacred Heart of Jesus with us on Friday, June 27 th at 9.00 a.m. in the Senior Learning Centre. You are most welcome to join us. Let us pray over the coming weeks: Open our eyes to the wonders of Your Love that we may serve You with willing hearts. Thank you in anticipation of your generous support for this Appeal. Inside this issue: Enrolments close June 13 th Sacred Heart of Jesus June 27 th Food Drive Mass Friday, June 27 th 9.00 a.m. End of Term 2 Friday, June 27 th 2.30 p.m. Please continue to keep all the Confirmation Candidates and their families in your prayers as they take this very important step in the faith journey. School Closure Day Monday, July 28 th
As a Catholic School we are a community, which celebrates our Catholic Story and traditions and recognise Christ is at the centre of our lives: Glory to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit; to God who is, who was and who is to come. Apoc. 1:8 We celebrate the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity this coming Sunday. The mystery of the Trinity is central to our Catholic faith and way of life. We celebrate the love of God as Father, Son and Spirit and we are called to believe in and share God s love with others. The most common prayer of the Trinity is the Sign of the Cross with which we identify ourselves as believers in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The acclamation of faith in the Trinity is joined by a gesture of tracing the Cross of Christ by which salvation came to the world. The gesture embraces the head (the intellectual aspects of ourselves); the core or centre of our bodies, the stomach (the intuitive, spontaneous aspects of ourselves); the shoulders (representing our capacity for work in service of others), and the heart (the emotional aspects of ourselves). In tracing this holy sign we remember we are blessed in mind and heart and all our being. Love of Jesus fill us Holy Spirit guide us Will of the Father be done. Information on the Sign of the Cross was taken from the Journal of the Liturgical Commission Vol. 32 No. 2 Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne.

Leader of Learning and Teaching - Inquiry and Innovation Miss Elyce Birch GOOD-FIT BOOKS During reading time, all students from Foundation to Grade 6 are involved in Read to self. Students have worked hard to build their stamina and read for longer periods of time. Read to self is not silent reading but it is reading with a purpose. Children read good fit books and practice reading strategies from the CAFÉ menu. Students are also involved in 1-1 conferences with the teacher and workshops to teach and reinforce reading strategies and skills. What are Good Fit Books? To read independently during read to self time, students have a collection of books that they store in book boxes or book bags. Students may have anywhere between 1-10 books. They select their books from a variety of books housed in their community narratives, information books, poems, nursery rhymes, chapter books etc. Students are encouraged to choose books that are a good fit which means that these are books where they can read the words and understand the text they are not too easy and not to hard but at their level. We have evidence from almost 70 years of research confirming that an independentlevel book, or good-fit book, for children is one they can read with 99% accuracy (Betts 1946). Gambrell, Wilson, and Grant (1981) said higher levels of oral reading error were linked to significant increases in off-task behaviour. (The Daily, second edition, page 73) Students may also have some books where they can read the pictures. Please note that your child s take home book is of an easy level and at school they read books that are at their independent/instructional level.
Teachers use the process of IPICK to assist students with selecting their good-fit books. I select a book and look it over, inside and out Purpose: Why might I want to read it? Interest: Does it interest me? Comprehend: Do I understand what I am reading? Know: Do I know most of the words? 1. "What is your purpose for choosing this book?" A follow-up question could be, "Is it for fun or to learn something?".point to the P for PURPOSE as you ask these questions. 2. "Are you interested in this story?" Point to the I for INTEREST. Most of the time the child will say they are interested in the story or the author, but occasionally a child will say, "No, I'm not interested in this book". If a child says they are not interested in the story, your follow-up question would be, "Is this a good fit book for you?" 3. "Please read one page to see if you can comprehend this story. We are going to do a check for understanding to see if you can comprehend, which means understand what you are reading." Point to the C for COMPREHEND. The child then reads one page, and does an oral check for understanding. 4. "Please read one more page to see if you know all the words". Point to K for KNOW ALL THE WORDS. If the child knows the words, ask, "Boys and girls, is this a good fit book for?" ( If you visit the library with your child or they want to purchase a book from the shops, you may wish to implement the IPICK process with them.
News from the Deputy Principal Mr. Simon Greely Cross Country We had a great result at our Cardinia District Cross Country event last week. Nine of our students qualified to participate, with three going on to the Southern Metropolitan event next Monday after finishing in the top 6. Joshua won his event with Connor finishing 3 rd and Declan C. finished 5 th. Emma and Luke R were unlucky, finishing 7 th and 8 th in their events, just missing out on qualifying for the next stage. Luke M., Max, Declan S. and Abbey were also fantastic runners on the day, representing St. Brigid s extremely well. Thanks to Karen, Scott and the parents who helped transport the team safely. ICT 16 new laptops went into the Senior Learning Community today. Next term we will do an audit of our equipment and see what learning centres are using and what is required looking towards OHS With our new Multi-Purpose Room nearing completion we want parents to know that we will have an extra staff member on duty when the construction fences are removed. This will mean there will be 3 staff members on duty outside, as well as 1 staff member on sickbay duty inside. The outside staff members all wear bright yellow vests so your children can easily see them. Leader of Learning and Teaching - Religious Education Mr. Damian O Bryan Last week we celebrated the Church s Birthday in Pentecost. In one of our Sister Religions, this day is also a Jewish Festival called Shavuot. It commemorates the anniversary of the day God gave the Torah to the entire nation of Israel assembled at Mount Sinai. For Christians, the Acts of the Apostles recounts this as a day the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples. It occurred after Jesus had ascended into heaven post Crucifixion. The author uses the image of tongues of fire as they came to rest on the heads of the disciples. The room was filled with fire and wind. The author s account of Acts (who also wrote the Gospel of Luke), cleverly used these symbols to illustrate that like wind, the Holy Spirit cannot be seen, but it can certainly be felt. Like Fire, the Holy Spirit brings warmth and love to people s hearts. We call it the Church s birthday because it was on that day the disciples left the locked up room (they were scared they would face the same fate that Jesus did from the authorities) and unapologetically Spread the Good News and carried out the mission of Jesus. To support them on their mission, the Holy Spirit gave them seven gifts.
Understanding Knowledge Courage Wisdom Wonder and Awe Reverence Right Judgment Each of us has been given these gifts. During the Confirmation workshop and class time, the Children recognised how these gifts are visible in us! For example, the great Jimmy Stynes used the gift of Courage as he battled Cancer whilst using his gift of Understanding as he supported the kids from the Reach Foundation. Parents use the gift of Right Judgment, Wisdom and Understanding as they instill the values their children will need for the journey ahead. As teachers we see the Children using a variety of these gifts all the time during class and on the playground. The reality is, each of us have been given these gifts. Like all gifts they have been wrapped up as a present. However, it is our choice whether we unwrap the gifts and use them in our life. It is by no coincidence that over last weekend and this coming weekend, our confirmation candidates from all three parish schools were confirmed. Congratulations to all our students on the way they conducted themselves throughout the program and for the way they represented St. Brigid s. Tomorrow: The Senior Learning Community will be celebrating Mass at 9am. The invitation is open to Parents and all members of our wider community to come and celebrate and give thanks for a great term.
Leader of Learning and Teaching Wellbeing Mrs. Mary Rose Wellbeing and Inclusiveness There is growing evidence that schools and communities that work together can indeed enhance a child s life chances, wellbeing and school outcomes. Effective schools have always been reflections of effective families and communities. George Otero, Centre for relational Learning, 2011 There is a growing understanding that increasing a child s life chances depend on the school and the community working together. Our understanding of education is not merely a reflection of academic success but the development of well-rounded students, problem solvers and creative thinkers. This student is resilient and ready to thrive in the modern world. In educating the whole child we foster academic achievement, promote physical health and hold in high regard the emotional wellbeing of the individual. Three strategic themes underpin this strategy and act as foundational principles for educating the whole child in partnership with parents and community. o Leading wellbeing to enhance learning: acknowledges the critical role of school leaders in developing a wellbeing culture across the school community, which draws the links between student wellbeing and improved learning outcomes. o Creating safe and effective learning environments: focuses on the wide range of school structures, processes and procedures including curriculum teaching and learning, which contribute to the provision of a safe and effective learning environment for all. o Promoting school community partnerships for learning: acknowledges the role of the school in building community and reaching out to the broader school community and beyond, to build diverse and inclusive partnerships for learning.

Orders will then be packed and ready for collection on the same day. Payment can be made at the school office directly or via telephone if that is more convenient. We thank you for your patience and for the continued hard work from the uniform shop ladies. Weekly Lunch Orders Update The Lunch Order Price List is on the St Brigid s website for future reference.
