1 DIVERSITY CALENDAR Keele Communities Together

2 Keele University Equality Objectives - Keele University has developed five equality objectives in line with its duties under the Equality Act and the public sector equality duty. The objectives have been developed in collaboration with our staff, students, and Staff Unions. The equality objectives support all three aims of the general duty (to eliminate unlawful discrimination, advance equality, and foster good relations) and are specific and measurable. Further information can be obtained via the following link INTRODUCTION Keele is a diverse, inclusive and professional community that respects individuals and enables them to strive for success in order to contribute positively and sustainably in the local region, wider society and national economy. Our students, academics and professional staff are drawn from over 0 different countries. That rich mix of cultures and our strong sense of community and cohesion provides opportunities for all staff and students to live, work and socialise in an internationalised environment. This enhances our global outlook and helps Keele act as a local and regional gateway to the rest of the world. The Keele Communities Together Working Group is made up of representatives from across the University and students unions. It aims to ensure that Keele continues to be a stimulating and inspirational learning community with a rich and diverse social and cultural life, committed to the safeguarding of freedom of expression, and tolerant of diverse views and beliefs, balanced alongside the promotion of good relations on campus, tackling intolerance and operating within the existing legal framework. The calendar has been created to use as a practical resource which includes main religious festivals and major national and international days of celebration or memorial. The purpose of the calendar is to recognise world faiths currently represented within our community. Diversity Champions Scheme Keele is proud to have a small group of Diversity Champions who provide a unique way of mainstreaming all the important work that is already being achieved at Keele. Our Champions are the conduit for disseminating information, driving behavioural and cultural change across the organisation and link equality, diversity and inclusion into corporate objectives of the organisation. Our Keele Champions are able to assist us to raise awareness and are ambassadors of the model behaviour that is a fundamental part of the dignity and respect frameworks at Keele. If you are a member of the Keele community and would like to make a difference and become a Diversity Champion, please contact the Equalities team. In the spirit of diversity we welcome any feedback or suggestions you can make towards the development of our calendar. Hannah - 0 h.r.barjat@keele.ac.uk Caroline c.a.farnell@keele.ac.uk

He created the Khalsa (The Pure Ones) in, changing the Sikhs into a saint-soldier order with special symbols and sacraments for protecting themselves. After the Guru had administered Amrit to his Five Beloved Ones, he stood up in supplication and with folded hands, begged them to baptize him in the same way as he had baptized them. At Keele, we place our community at the heart of everything we do. 12 Samhain is a very important festival for many Pagans and occurs on st October. Samhain marks the end of the Celtic calendar and the start of a New Year. Some Pagans believe this is the time when the veil between the world of the living and of the ancestors is the thinnest. Many Pagans use this festival to remember the ancestors and our friends and family who have passed in the year. A key aspect of many Pagan faiths is connection and the reverence of ancestors, Samhain represents the celebration of kin as well as Pagan martyrs. To see what KUPOS is doing this year for Samhain, soc.kupos@keele.ac.uk BLACK HISTORY MONTH: Diwali or Deepavali is one of the most prominent and famous Hindu festivals of India. Deepavali means rows of lights so this festival is also known as Festival of Lights. Diwali festival starts with Dhanteras, followed by small Diwali and then main Diwali. People of all religions enjoy this festival by making vibrant rangolis, lighting lamps diyas, distributing sweets, exchanging gifts between friends and relatives and burning crackers. 14 Christmas is celebrated by Christians across the globe as the birthday of Jesus Christ. Christians believe that the birth of Jesus was the ultimate gift of God to people, so they could be in direct relationship with God: this is where the tradition of gift-giving comes from - mirroring the gift from God. This can be seen in the Letter to the Galatians : - But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children.
