3 Learning Objectives To know the challenges facing Edward when he became king. To understand why he changed the church. To be able to explain how people viewed the changes.

4 Henry VIII s Break from Rome Henry had broken away from Rome but he didn t actually make very many changes! Henry made himself Head of the Church of England, but kept a lot of other things the same. Can you remember what churches were like in England in the 1500s? To what extent did Henry change things?

5 The young King Edward VI Edward became king when he was only 9 years old that s year 4/5 in primary school! He ruled for 6 years and died when he was only 15. Edward didn t reign for a very long time, but he did make a lot of changes! First, though, he had some challenges to overcome

6 There s a lot of unrest between s and Protestants in England. Some people want my sister, Mary, to be the ruler instead of me. Henry left a regency council in charge of looking after me. They re going to want to try and take power especially my uncle, who is in charge of them! A king needs money to run his country but my dad spent it all! I m only 9 years old. Historically, not many child kings have been successful even the Bible says woe to those who have a child for a king!

7 Spot the difference Look at the pictures on pages of the textbook. Write down all the changes you can see between Henry s and Edward s churches.

8 Enquiry Read pages of the textbook. On your sheet, add in the changes Edward made. Extension: In your book, plot the change and continuity of each factor on a line graph. Ask me how to do this if you re not sure!

9 Why? Edward himself was a devout Protestant. He read 12 chapters of the Bible every day! Thomas Cranmer was one of Edward s advisors. He was also the Archbishop of Canterbury, and he was a very strong Protestant. He was the one who had persuaded Henry to start a new Church of England. He wanted Edward to make even more changes.

12 Why did Edward change the Church? Because Edward was only nine years old, his advisors told him what to do, think, and say. They were Protestant and they encouraged him to make many changes to religion. Edward himself was also a Protestant and had been raised by Protestants. He read 12 chapters of the Bible every day! Thomas Cranmer was one of Edward s advisors. He was also the Archbishop of Canterbury, and he was a very strong Protestant. He was the one who had persuaded Henry to start a new Church of England. He wanted Edward to make even more changes. What did Edward do? A new prayer book was introduced. Services were now said in English, not Latin. The Mass was ended and replaced with the Protestant Holy Communion service. According to this service the bread and wine represented the body and blood of Jesus Christ, but did not actually become the body and blood of Jesus Christ, as it does in Mass. Holy communion was a service of remembrance, not a sacrifice. Churches were changed. Stained-glass windows were smashed and replaced with simple windows; the walls were whitewashed; and decorations were taken away. Priests were told to dress in simple clothes, not fine robes. Priests could now get married. You could no longer buy your way into heaven.
