Agape Christian Church International Literacy & Vocational Training School Prospectus 2010/ 2011

Introduction Agape Christian Church International came forth through a home Bible fellowship that began first in the home of one of its current members in September, 2008, and later that year moved into the home of Apostle Linda Marcell in Kansanga, which is also the headquarters of Agape Global Missions. The church functions in Uganda under the umbrella of Agape Global Missions which is a registered Non- Governmental Organization in the country. Some of our first members lived in Bukasa and they mobilized others from the Bukasa area to become a part of our church. Our God-given Vision is to bring salvation, hope, healing and restoration to God s people through worship, prayer, fellowship, the preaching and teaching of God s Word. Individuals will be built up in the faith to fulfill their God-given purpose as effective witnesses for Christ in their homes, communities and throughout the world. The Lord has called us to be bearers of the Light of Jesus. We must lift up His name, declare His Word and demonstrate His love to the lost, broken, impoverished and wounded. See Isaiah 58:6-12; Isaiah 60:1-5; Habakkuk 1:5; Habakkuk 2:14; Ezekiel 47:1-12; Philippians 2: Our Mission is to bring hope, healing and restoration to build strong families that will impact and transform communities, through holistic ministry. We seek to equip and empower believers with life skills that will help them to be productive citizens in the communities where they live. Such outreaches will be: Vocational training in crocheting, beading, tailoring, cookery, gardening, computer skills, pottery etc. Literacy training Life Skills such as positive parenting, decision making, love, sex and relationships etc Counseling Evangelism/Discipleship training and personal ministry will be included in all activities. Background After planting our first church, we saw the need to reach out with holistic ministry to our members. Several of the women in our church from Bukasa were totally illiterate and had no skills for employment. We decided to respond to this need by beginning on a small level, a literacy and vocational school. We had little resources but started in faith last year with ten women. Three of which were members of our church and they mobilized others in their area where they live using this also as an evangelistic tool to reach out to the lost. Through the literacy and vocational training school two of the other ladies gave their lives to Christ as the Gospel was being preached during devotion. 2

The literacy and vocational training was also a way of demonstrating God's love to the less privileged and to help to build their self-esteem and give glory to God. This holistic ministry outreach also empowered the members to cope with the challenges of a dynamic world, and to help them grow in faith to fulfill their God given purpose as effective witnesses for Christ in their families and the world. Statement of Need Bukasa is a village community that is located Lower Muyenga Kampala Uganda Its people are of two major classes, which consist of the rich and middle class, and those that are extremely poor Because of the extreme level of poverty there is a large student dropout rate which contributes to the increase percentage of adult illiteracy in Bukasa. This also creates other social problems such as high rate of unemployment, alcoholism and drug addiction, violence, teen mothers etc. Now that we have official relocated our church into the Bukasa community, we see a great to continue our literacy and vocational school training with the desire to expand our ministry outreach to serve more people through this project. Research has shown that many cultures in Uganda still emphasize the woman s role as only giving birth and cooking, while others glorify barbaric acts such as Female Genital Mutilation. Women are also discouraged from attending school and as a result, many women, especially in rural areas are illiterate. Statistics indicate that 66% of adult illiteracy is among women in Uganda as opposed to the 36% among men. Women are at a higher disadvantage because most Ugandan communities have always denied them equal access to education opportunities. There are several factors responsible for the imbalance between the men and women literacy rate: The majority of parents especially poor families do not consider women's education to be as important as men's education Culturally, with bride price being a major source of income, girls have to be married off as soon as possible. So the earlier they are out of school the better Girls have always been a vulnerable group. Most families do not offer girls a second chance after they fall victim to teen pregnancy. 3

Goals and Objectives To support Government policy in the implementation of Education for all. To empower students with skills that will enable them to face the challenges of the enlightened world. The most important long-term goal of early literacy experiences is to help learners become successful readers and writers. Learning to read and write is one of the most important achievements for life. To empower students with life skills and vocational skills that will enable them to become productive citizens in their homes and community. Current Project Description and Outcome for The ACCI Literacy and Vocational School began on 25 th March, 2009 with ten women from the Bukasa community. The curriculum for the year consisted of basic literacy, crochet, cookery and baking skills. We hosted our first graduation on Friday, 30 th, July 2010, graduating four students who had successfully mastered their vocational skills that were taught. The classes were held at Agape Global Missions for three days a week (Wednesday; Thursday and Friday) from two o'clock to five o'clock (2:00pm-5:00pm). The aim has been to give the Students amble time to take care of their families since most of them are house wives. The classes always begun with devotion/bible study that took 30 minutes and there after students would separate for classes, since the students were on various academic levels. The devotional messages were done by ACCI ministers and visiting missionaries from the United States. The messages shared during the devotion were centered on themes such as God's plan for man, the fall of Man, God's plan of Salvation, Results of Salvation (New identity in Christ, Spiritual life, Godly living, the Lordship of Jesus Christ and Prayer and how to use the armor of God as we pray. Interactive discussion was done and most students asked questions and contributed freely. We thank God for the growth and maturity Spiritual levels of the students and we believe they will also in turn pass on the skills to others. Personal ministry and counseling was also done with different students to help them to deal with marriage and family life from a biblical perspective. Other types of ministry were home visitations to pray for families and supplying of some food and emotional support. This has created a strong bond between the ministers and all vocational students. 4

Devotion in progress We are blessed to have Mrs. Happy Hodever and Mrs Robinah Kawanguzi who are both former educators having taught Primary School in Uganda. These ladies, both staff members of Agape Global Missions, divided their work load to serve as dedicated teachers of the literacy training. Literacy class in progress Learners being instructed in reading the Bible and also writing lessons In this department our primary learning goal is to enable vocational members to study God s Word on their own. The students have already learnt how to make sweaters, caps, purses, bags, and Skirts using threads and variety of necklaces, cakes and Samosa. We thank the Lord for the skills got. 5

Challenges experienced The finances were a challenge although we continues by faith and we really thenk the Lord that He has seen us through the first Graduation. Inadequate facilities have been a challenge. We have no permanent Structure that can be used as classrooms and whenever it rains, shifting to several areas has often put classes to a halt. The instructors have all been volunteering to teach the students and need some pay to continue with the work. The students walk long distances from Bukasa to Agape irrespective of the weather conditions. There has also been irregularity of some students due to ill health of either their children, spouses or themselves. It remained a challenge for them to balance nursing the sick and studies. This created a rift in the levels of attainment for individual students. We believe that taking the services nearer to the people we serve as we start next year is of great importance in solving those challenges Testimonies The Students had this to say on their graduation: "I had never dreamt that one day I will sit in Class to be taught without paying a penny, this is a real blessing"; " I had never written or read anything before, I fail to believe although true that I can now read and write the alphabet, and write some simple words. I can also weave yet I had never held a needle, I can make Necklaces and cakes too. I thank the Lord for the good teachers who have given us their time to help us" Anna Maria shared with excitement Margret Ssali says, "I knew how to handle a hook but did not know how to use it to make anything valuable.,i am so happy because I have already learnt how to make caps, baby sweaters, cakes and I have been getting orders from different people and I am sure this will help me a lot to get some income. I thank the good Lord for the achievement and also Pastor Linda for having been touched by God and using her to help us. Ketty Nantongo " I thank Joyce for bringing us to a place where we can be taught skills. I am very happy because I have already got some people who have made orders for caps. I thank God because I can now read the Bible on my own. I pray that God blesses Agape for their kindness". Susan "I am happy that I have also acquired the skills in crochet without paying a penny. We at first thought that you are going to ask for money and had fear of how we were going to get it. I can make any design that I want. I thank my teachers for the good work. We also thank Agape for the break tea and its accompaniments that is given to us for free throughout the course. May the almighty God richly bless you 9
