36 The Gospel Era (Matthew - John) The Arrest, Trial and Crucifixion of Jesus Why couldn t the disciples stay awake in the garden? Keep in mind that the disciples had traveled the entire week before reaching Jerusalem in preparation of the Passover meal. The Passover involved a huge meal plus four cups of wine and usually started at sundown and lasted until midnight (The word Seder means order ). No wonder the disciples couldn t stay awake! Why were the supporters of Jesus so fickle? Knowing the popularity of Jesus, the religious leaders knew they could not take him in broad daylight, but rather secretly. What better night to take him then on Passover night when most went to bed after the meal. So they let Judas lead them to Jesus when he was outside the city and in the middle of the night. Jesus arrest and trial proceeded swiftly, occurring in the wee hours of the morning with his sentence being handed down at sunrise (Mark 14:70-72 Peter s denial happened at the cock s crow). The crowd that cried crucify him was most likely corrupt priest and followers as the religious leaders knew they had to complete their secret trial before the crowds returned to the city for worship that morning. Jesus was crucified at 9am, so just as he was carrying his cross out of the city his supporters, heading for 9am worship reappear weeping out loud as they see him being led away to his death (Luke 23:27) 375
