2 Minister's Outlook Clear and 4 ( ) 7:00 a.m. Auld Lang Syne The song, Auld Lang Syne, is a popular song that is sung almost exclusively on New Year s Eve in the United States. There are generally two challenges we face as we sing it. One, most of the time we do not know all of the words, and two, if we do happen to know the words, we do not know what they mean. Hence, there is a noticeable amount of hesitancy in our voices as we sing. However, the intent of the song is very good. The title, Auld Lang Syne, carries the general meaning, in memory of days gone by or, in the olden days of the past. The song s general theme is that we should not forget the friends of our past though we often do but at least, be grateful for the memory of them on the rare occasions when they do come into our minds. The overriding message of the song is that the good old days are of value to us and we should humbly appreciate the fellowship we had with others who have impacted our lives. I remember the good old days with deep respect and admiration, both for God and for the many godly men and women who have impacted my life for good. I have never ceased to be in awe of God s hand. It brings comfort, joy, and melancholy melancholy because I know the good old days will not return. I am much like the apostle Peter when he stated on the Mount of Transfiguration, It is good to be here. He had no desire to leave. However, God had other plans for Peter, so he had to move forward in the present. So must we also. Though we should appreciate the past, we cannot neglect the present nor fail to anticipate the things God has in store for us in the future. Eliza Hewitt, in her hymn, When We All Get To Heaven, states our responsibilities in the present and the resulting outcome in the future: Sing the wondrous love of Jesus, Sing His mercy and His grace. In the mansions bright and blessed, He ll prepare for us a place. Chorus: When we all get to heaven, What a day of rejoicing that will be, When we all see Jesus, We ll sing and shout the victory. Surely, it is good to appreciate our past, but we must press on in the present in order to prepare to meet our loving God in eternity. May you have a bountiful year in 2017! --Robert Encouragement Corner Year In Review Like many of you, it s hard for me to believe that another year has come and gone. This time of year though, I m reminded of that fact every time I log onto the internet. It seems that there is no end to the Year In Review compilations that have been compiled. Whether it be in the realm of; sports, entertainment, or world news, it s always interesting to view the highlights that made the year memorable. In the same sense, it s always good to stop at the end of the year and reflect on the previous twelve months in our own lives. What was it about the year 2016 that made it unique? What were the highlights? What were the lowlights? How has God used this last year to shape us as individuals? There s no doubt, as you read Scripture, that God encouraged his people to remember his faithfulness to them. In fact, on several occasions in the Old Testament, the Israelites would go so far as to erect stones, mounds or altars to serve as r e m i n d e r s t o f u t u r e g e n e r a t i o n s. For example, after God miraculously stopped the flow of the Jordan River, to allow the Israelites to cross into the Promised Land, we re told in Joshua 4:4-7 4 So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, 5 and said to them, Go over before the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, 6 to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, What do these stones mean? 7 tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever. As I think back on this past year, I m reminded of many events that have helped to shaped both the congregation and the community here at Kenai Christian Church. Events such as; the Men s Retreat, Easter services, Graduation Sunday, small groups, VBS, camp, the church picnic, Promotion Sunday, Missions Emphasis Month, Women s Retreat, Trunk or Treat, the Thanksgiving meal, the Christmas Tea, Cookie Theatre, the Christmas Eve service and Soul Cafe. With so many blessings in our lives, it only seems right to stop and remember the Lord s faithfulness and thank those who made each of these events possible. I m not suggesting that you erect a stone monument in their honor, but it may not hurt to express your appreciation through a kind word, plate of cookies or maybe even a gym membership. (to work off all the extra cookies) Because He s the Truth, Bryan

3 About PCM: We assist Polish Christians in becoming healthy, growing, self-supporting, and reproducing congregations. We do this by planting churches, providing resources and building friendships. We are currently supporting 24 churches and 4 mission stations in Poland. Dave Hatfield 2013-Present: David A. Hatfield assumed the responsibilities of Executive Director on March 1, Since 2007 he had been serving the people and churches of Poland in a full-time capacity with Impact Europe. His first exposure to Poland was in 1996 when he and his wife, Sandy, took a short-term mission trip to Ostróda Camp. Under David s leadership, the mission focuses on church planting, providing resources, and building friendships (especially through the recruitment of interns and facilitating short-term teams). David and Sandy reside in Brighton, MI. Pray for Poland: For relationships to deepen as PCM engages in leadership development sessions in 15 Polish Churches (2017). For building renovation projects in Bielsk Podlaski ($10,000), Olsztyn ($5,000) and Ciechanow ($5,000) The seeds planted in Lublin and Bielsk Podlaski to bear fruit. Praise God for the many individuals who are making plans to come to Poland in 2017 to assist Polish Christians in evangelistic outreaches, to encourage them in faith and ministry, and to support leadership development initiatives between PCM and local Polish churches. We have sign-ups starting on December 11th online and in the foyer. Thursday Morning Study is: Ephesians What is the purpose of tree roots? Roots anchor a tree in the soil, keeping it straight and stable. Roots also absorb water and nutrients from the soil to sustain the tree which leads to growth and eventually reproduction. Scripture calls us to be like trees planted by streams of water which bear fruit in season (Psalm 1). How do we become fruitful trees? It starts with the roots. We need to be ROOTED in God's Word so we can be straight and stable in this ever changing world. When we are ROOTED in the Word then we will grow, produce fruit and reproduce disciples. Come join us as we get ROOTED in Scripture as we study Ephesians. Our roots will go deeper as we focus on prayer, Scripture memorization and Bible study. With deep roots we will have an anchor for our souls.
