2878 St. John`s Drive, Jordan ON L0R 1S0 (905) Spring 2017 The Reverend Canon Dr. Cathie Crawford Browning This Easter season, as we listen to the stories of the many ways that Jesus appeared to his followers in the days and weeks following the resurrection, so often unrecognizably at first, we are challenged to be on the lookout for how he shows up in our lives today. Here are a few examples of the ways I ve experienced the presence of Christ in our midst: Sunday worship as I hear God s Word proclaimed, as we sing and pray together, as we are fed in the eucharist, as we share friendship at Coffee Hour. Our parish study group that read and prayed the book Beyond Question together this past Lent. Tuesday after Tuesday I was moved, sometimes to tears, at the stories people shared of how they have come to and been sustained in faith by the working of God in their lives. The energy and vision that is exhibited by our leaders as we look forward to the appointment of a new Rector. The new ideas and initiatives that are being undertaken, including the consideration of new outreach ministry with migrant workers, youth, The Village of Hope, and our Marketing St. John s Task Force. The amazing commitment of volunteers in our church who give so much time, energy, love, money in support of the ministries of our church. My prayer is that each of you are also blessed with a list of the ways that you know the presence of the living Christ in our midst!
Stt.. JJohn ss Parrocchi iall Committttee Updatte Our team, consisting of Cathy Jones, George Willows, Doug Whitaker, Reg Tufford, Sandy Dudar and Cathie Crawford Browning, generally meets every three weeks to plan upcoming parish meetings, review the feedback we ve had and discern what needs to be done next. Since January, we have convened four parish meetings in which we have discussed: January 8 February 5 March 12 April 30 Where we are at as a congregation, including the issues we need to address What has brought us here/what we have to offer What needs/resources there are in the community and church that intersect in a way that position us to make a difference What ministries we value, what ministries we could let go, what ministries we should consider beginning On May 28, we will have a parish meeting to complete a Ministry Priorities Survey. On June 11, we will have a meeting to discuss whether we will request that Bishop Michael appoint a rector on a full time or part-time basis. In June, we will begin meeting with our Transitional Consultant, Gail Grant, to produce a written document called a Parish Profile that will be given to the bishop for distribution to potential candidates.
Frraud Prreventti ion fforr Seniorrss On Tuesday, May 30 th at 2 pm, Brock Godfrey, a 20 year senior volunteer with The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (formerly Phone Busters) will offer a presentation on Fraud Prevention for Seniors. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre is a joint operation of the RCMP, the OPP and the Competition Bureau of Canada. It is the central agency in Canada that collects information and criminal intelligence on such matters as mass marketing fraud (i.e.: telemarketing), advance fee fraud (West African letters), Internet fraud and identification theft complaints. This no cost event is designed to be a helpful, practical initiative to benefit people in the wider community. Please invite your family and friends to join us. Refreshments will be served. Marrketti ing Stt.. JJohn ss As I have engaged in ministry at St. John s, I have become more and more convinced that we need to find ways of letting hurting, broken, lost, looking-for-more-to-life-than-this people in the Jordan/Vineland area know that in our church they can be met by the living God who sent His Son to live and die and rise again so that they can enjoy abundant life, here and hereafter. We have so much to offer with worship, pastoral care and Christian community that can make a difference in people's lives, yet often all outsiders see, if they even notice us at all--we are at the top of a hill behind some trees!?--is a stone building that looks (and they think operates) like a museum. Under the leadership of Sid Copperthwaite, we have struck a new task force with the mandate to come up with some effective ways and means for marketing our ministry. If you have ideas or suggestions for us, please share them with Sid by ing him at copperthwaite.sid@yahoo.com or phone him at he ll be delighted to hear from you! Brenda Lane, our Treasurer, reports that we are still in the black! YTD Mar. 31, 2017 Balance Forward $ 3, Income Offerings $ 18, Other income $ 9, Total Income $ 28, Expenses Staffing $ 14, Program $ Property $ 7, Sundry $ Total expenses $ 27, Closing Balance YTD $ 3, Mar. 31 st 2017 closing balance $ 3,808.51
Reporrtt on ourr Reffugee IniI itti iatti ive Great news from the Refugee Initiative! With the support of our congregation and the community our most recent fundraiser, the Pasta Dinner and Silent Auction, was a huge success. Including donations given that evening, we have a total of $4824 to add to our account. This puts us well over our original goal required to sponsor our family of 5. We will be posting a picture of our family on the church bulletin board very shortly. One of our committee members, Andy Tait, is organizing a golf tournament to be held at 20 Valley on July 12 and we are holding a Trivia night at the Armenian Community Centre in St. Catharines on October 21 st. Mark your calendars and watch for details on these and other fundraisers coming up. Men ss Brreakffasstt Club The Men s Breakfast Club usually meets the second Saturday of the month, from September to June, for an excellent breakfast, cooked each week by volunteers from the club, for a $5 fee. Friends and family members are very welcome, whether or not they attend church here or at all. We usually phone around the Thursday before to get an idea of numbers so if you would like your name added to the call list, please speak to Henry Zantingh or call him at (905) You are probably reading this and asking yourself, Why on earth are they holding more fundraisers when they have more than enough money already??? Well, are you sitting down to read this? Our wonderful committee has unanimously decided to continue with the goal of being able to bring another small family to safety! This is not really as crazy as it sounds. We know we are going to have to wait at least a year for our existing family to come. All our paperwork is completed but the wheels of government turn very slowly and it s a very long process of medicals, background checks, interviews etc. before they actually get on that airplane. So, since we are on a roll, so to speak, and still have some good fundraising ideas and lots of enthusiasm, we have decided to keep going. It would be wonderful if we could bring over other members of the same family because that makes life so much happier for new Canadians but that remains to be seen. The Holy Grri illl The Holy Grill Convenors met and decided to run both functions: Ribfest at Montebello Park, St. Catharines and Vineland ARTfest at Twenty Valley School. The Holy Grill is St. John's major fundraiser but also provides much fellowship for our parishioners. Please keep the following dates open as many volunteers are required to run each event: Ribfest August 4 to 7 & ARTfest October 7 to 9. Thank you in advance for volunteering when called upon. We are small but mighty (and very blessed!) Co-chairs, St. John s Refugee Initiative Brenda Z and Linda B
Prroperrtty Committttee Eventtss Committttee The Events Committee is holding a Garage, Plant and Bake Sale fundraiser for St. John s from 8 am to 12 noon, Saturday, May 6, Many thanks to all who signed up to contribute baked items, display plants or contribute treasures for the sale tables. The Committee's next event is our Spring Tea and Fashion Show on Saturday, June 17, 2017 from 2 to 4 p.m. Tickets go on sale May 21. The Event Committee invites everyone to bring family and friends to these two fun events. Joyce Richardson Many thanks to the few but mighty that participated in the Spring Clean. Kitchen and stoves were cleaned, knives were sharpened, garage was organized, patio swept and grounds landscaped. In addition, thanks to the chili chefs who provided lunch. Mike Dudar, Property Chair Sttewarrdsshi ip Committttee The Stewardship Committee defines Stewardship as: What we do, with what we have, after we say, I believe. The Stewardship challenge is to ask yourself how you can use your resources of time, talent and treasure for God. What is that special thing which you can do that no one else can do quite the same way? Is it an ability to encourage and inspire? Is it a loving tone people hear in your voice? Is it a skill in music, art, teaching or managing? What are those things that our Lord and owner of all things has entrusted to you? How have you responded to that trust? How are you doing as a Steward of Jesus Christ? The Stewardship Committee plans to celebrate our St. John's parishioners' givings of time and talent in the near future. We at St. John's have much to celebrate in this upcoming Stewardship audit. Spring tulips in one of the gardens The next meeting of the Stewardship Committee will be on May 8th at 5 pm at McGregor's in Vineland. Joyce Richardson
