3 VISA MINISTRIES VISA Ministries is the established avenue for pastors, mission leaders and individuals to connect as Volunteers In Service Abroad with Free Methodist ministry around the world. Through training and collaboration with world area directors, national leaders and missionaries, participants are provided assistance to ensure the best outcome for those we serve. Training VISA University programs teach people about the complexities of cross-cultural ministry and how to avoid common pitfalls and better understand God s heart for the world. Contact deb.miller@fmcusa.org Team Leader Training helps experienced and inexperienced team leaders prepare and equip their team members for effective cross-cultural ministry. Training is offered as host groups are identified. Global Studies Intensives (GSI) brings together people from multiple countries to study biblical perspectives on missions and learn from recognized international experts. This two-week travel experience includes formal and informal learning and exposure to cross-cultural ministry, sights, sounds, tastes and smells. GSI is offered every two to three years and has been hosted in Brazil, Cambodia, Egypt, India, Kenya, Myanmar and Thailand. Collaboration FMWM can assist churches and conferences to be thoughtful global Christians as they engage in crosscultural ministry and avoid some of the pitfalls short-term ministry creates when done poorly. Tools are provided to help think critically about cross-cultural engagement and to identify strategic ministry opportunities that will honor and empower the international hosts. VISA Team Assignments are generally 10 to 15 day collaborative experiences where team members help with English or sports camps, children s programs, prayer journeys and/or construction. Contact hannah.knowland@fmcusa.org VISA Fast Track Assignments are geared for individuals and families desiring to fill a need identified by national leadership. Such assignments generally require a specific skill set or training and may include teaching in a theological institution, medical ministry in a hospital or clinic, maintenance or emergency relief. Assignments are from two weeks to six months. Contact hannah.knowland@fmcusa.org VISA Voyager Assignments provide individuals and families the opportunity to clarify God s call on their lives in terms of cross-cultural ministry or volunteer their time and talents for 1 to 2 years to help fill a critical need. Ministry appointment is a collaborative process with local and national church leaders and requires a higher level of autonomy and accountability. 5 The Story See more at SEED is not a retail operation. Over the past three years, SEED has changed. Maybe you used to know SEED as the people who brought those cool products made by Free Methodists in developing countries. While we still do that, we want to emphasize that our goal is not to sell products. SEED stands for Sustainable Empowerment through Economic Development. We partner with Free Methodists around the world to do micro-enterprise that makes sense for them in their communities. For artisan groups, we assist with product development and marketing, but many times we are partnering with groups that have nothing to do with products: Maybe we help raise startup capital for a group to raise animals Maybe we partner with a church that wants to open a sewing school for women in their area Maybe we offer coaching in business plan development, strategy, or pricing models After all, handicrafts don t make sense for everyone. How about these two examples: in the Amparo Free Methodist Church in Manila, Philippines, there were a number of women without opportunity to provide for their children to attend school, and to provide for, or supplement, the family income for food, housing, and living expenses. But God was orchestrating something. Pastora Pol Guazon is an apostolic leader in East Asia, and she was serving as the administrative pastor at Amparo FMC. She met with the women in the church and they brainstormed ways they could generate income. They decided on raising pigs. Coincidentally there was a woman in the church (Inday, center, with Wiley and Evelyn) who had grown up in a family that raised pigs and then worked for the government, training people how to raise pigs. God provided an expert at just the right time! Inday wrote a business proposal, and Pastora Pol contacted SEED about startup funding. Typically, these conversations can take months, because we want the group to clearly think through their business idea and its potential for sustainability. In this case, after reading the proposal, it was clear that Inday knew what she needed to make the project go, and SEED set out to raise funds. Two churches in the US used the Amparo Swine Project as their Advent Conspiracy effort, and other individuals contributed as well, raising the money in only a few months. SEED co-director David Brewer was blessed to visit the group in 2012 and saw the first breeding sow, four piglets, and two pigpens. We have kept in touch with the group since, and in the group was able to finish purchasing or raising breeding sows for eight families in the church, building pigpens to hold sows and piglets, and selling the first piglets in their local marketplace. It sure it a glorious thing to be part of God s incredible story for this group and others around the world. Read more, and watch a video, about the Amparo effort at There you ll find other stories about artisan and non-artisan groups as well.
6 The Numbers See more at We know some people get excited about stories, and some get excited to hear about the ways that God is blessing through growth and sustainability. Here are some figures with brief context from so you can sense how God is growing SEEDs around the world: Livelihood Groups 9 The number of ongoing groups we continue working with. These are all artisan-based groups in Latin America (Peru), Africa (Uganda and two in Kenya), and Asia (India, East Asia, two in the Philippines, and Cambodia). 5 The number of SEED Capital groups that have graduated in the past three years and are now independent of SEED. These include agricultural services in Cameroon, a food cart, grocery store, and two swine projects in the Philippines. We have two active SEED Capital efforts, in Ethiopia and India. US-Based Customers 30 Number of trunk shows a brand new way to promote economic justice, sustainable livelihood, and SEED! Trunk shows were hosted in more than a dozen states across the country, with average sales of almost $700 per trunk show! Spreading the Word SEED Champions equipped with Action Kits. SEED Champions represent SEED in their local 14 churches and communities, through sharing updates, showing videos, hosting tables and trunk shows, and finding places to present about issues of social justice and fair trade. Champions are exploring ways to share in elementary schools, libraries, fair trade stores and coffee shops, and other means and mediums. Champions are active in Arizona, Michigan, Illinois, Nebraska, and Georgia, with trainings for Pacific Northwest and Oregon this year by numbers $128.4K $81.5k $ $133.4K $81.5k DONATIONS SEED CAPITAL $128.4K $133.4K $ $81.5k 2011 ARTISAN PRODUCT SALES $113.4K $128.4k 2012 FACEBOOK FOLLOWERS REVENUE GROWTH PARTNER GROWTH LOCAL LIVELIHOODS GLOBAL PARTNERSHIPS $128.4K $133.4K $ $81.5k 2011 ARTISAN PRODUCT SALES Philippines - Amparo Siomai Cart Philippines - Ahon Community Care Philippines - Ahon Community Care 11 livelihood groups 14 groups (two completed) 15 groups (two completed) Uganda Beads Empowering Uganda Uganda Beads Empowering Uganda Uganda Beads Empowering Uganda LIVELIHOOD GROUP GROWTH LIVELIHOOD GROUP GROWTH FACEBOOK FOLLOWERS SUBSCRIBers SUBSCRIBER SEED Trunk Shows 30 PILOT SEED CHAMPIONS 10 Number of retreats and conferences at which SEED staff were the featured plenary or missionary speakers.
