2 nd September, Text Only Version Feature Paddington Bear and our Suitcases! Some years ago I was constantly looking for symbols for prayer services. Knowing of my search a Sister gave me a gift, a Paddington Bear. As you may know Paddington Bear has a suitcase on the side of which, in large letters, are the words Wanted on Voyage. I was reminded of this image last December as we engaged in the Advent process. Placing in our suitcases the gifts which we felt were essential for our current journeying was important for us. Each community/cluster has knowledge of the gifts placed in their suitcases. Some months on now it is good practice to pause, have conversations with one another and ask, What gifts were placed in our Congregational suitcases and how are we using them? We do so in a spirit of awareness that the dignity of difference is a source of blessing. (Elizabeth Davis, July 2016) Perhaps, like Paddington Bear we included Hope for the journey. Our Chapter Statement invites us to respond anew in hope, a reminder to us that keeping hope alive for ourselves and for others is an essential part of our mercy mission. Others might have included Ecological Conversion in the suitcase. This conversion asks of us a radical change of mind and heart that leads to a deep love and respect for all creatures as having their own integrity before God. For some of us who might have included Reverence for the now, for the wonder and beauty we meet along the way, Elizabeth Barrett Browning s words will be an encouragement: 1

Earth s crammed with heaven and every common bush afire with God. But only those who see take off their shoes - The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries. As we contemplate Hope, Ecological Conversion and the poet s words we are led to a place of deep awe at the mystery of God s presence surrounding us and our world. These three gifts echo the story of Moses and the burning bush, reminding us that we are on holy ground. If we pause to look at and reflect on our ordinary, but mysteriously wonderful circumstances and surroundings, we too will notice bushes burning all around us. We are part of nature, included in it and thus in constant interaction with it (Laudato Si no. 139). I am at times surprised at how often I miss the presence of God in my life and walk past burning bushes. When I do so, I am reminded of Anthony DeMello s reflection - Hear the bird sing: God is the dancer, creation the dance Be silent and contemplate the dance Just look a star, a flower, a leaf, a bird, a stone Look, listen, touch, taste, smell If you really heard a bird sing, if you really saw a tree... you would know beyond words and concepts. What was that you said? That you have heard dozens of birds sing and seen hundreds of trees? Ah, was it the tree you saw or the label? If you look at a tree and see a tree, you have really not seen the tree. When you look at the tree and see a miracle then, at last, you have seen! Did your heart never fill with wordless wonder when you heard the song of the bird? Jesus noticed every bush afire with God. He was attuned to weather patterns and changing seasons. He knew trees, flowers, animals and birds. From Joseph, he probably learned about wood and perhaps had an eye for colour, line and texture. From Mary, I m sure he became well acquainted with freshly baked bread, sewn garments and wine. Throughout his ministry he marvelled at how love can do incredibly beautiful things. Our call is to be truly awake to the mystery of love always present, always capable of transforming us and our world. Awake to love we then notice every common bush afire with God and we too, do incredibly beautiful things. We might take some time this week, this month, to recall some burning bush times in our lives, when God mercifully touched us. We might also note our response. 2

We bring all kinds of gifts in our suitcases not knowing when or how we will use them. Each of us needs to be attentive to Treasures of Hope, Ecological Conversion and Reverent Hearts for Wonder and Beauty for the voyage ahead. As we continue along the journey of life, just like Paddington Bear, may we appreciate and delight in the voyage, cherishing what we have and discovering many new and surprising gifts along the way. May we trust that the diversity of visions and gifts among us is a sign of a healthy congregation and that everything is in the hands of God. Some suggestions for conversations: Why is it important for us to have conversations every so often about how we are using our gifts? What are the hopes you hold that need to be brought fully into the world? In the light of ecological conversion why is it important that we make choices, both small and great, to engage us daily in living a sustainable lifestyle, to care for the common good and to be hospitable? What are some burning bush times that have helped you in life? How do our experiences of sight, sound, taste, touch and smell reveal to us the miracle of God s creation? When did you notice God visible in your gifts and in the gifts of others? Cecilia Cadogan rsm Congregational Leadership team From the Congregational Offices: 3

Editorial September Edition of Welcome all to the September edition of where we begin with an engaging article about the voyage of life and faith by Cecilia Cadogan rsm from the leadership team. From the Congregational Offices we hear about how one of our ministries Mecpaths is educating young mercy leaders to follow in Catherine's footsteps and look without contempt on any class of people. The Leadership team are offering all the readers an opportunity to view online the powerful seminars delivered by Elizabeth Davis rsm in July in Ireland. Simply click on the article and follow the instructions. From Around the Congregation we hear about Iconography from South Central, a new environmental book to be published by the Western Province and the meaningful dialogues which occurred at this years Leadership Conference of Women Religious are depicted by the US Province. Continuing to celebrate the Year of Mercy through Pilgrimage, we hear about a Pilgrimage to St. Mel's Cathedral in Co. Longford. The Bigger Picture offers an insightful account from Deirdre Mullan rsm on Brexit and its impact on the Northern Province and globally. Our website of the month is Age Action focusing on Positive Ageing Week that is starting at the end of September. This website highlights how ageing can be a positive process bringing young and old together to celebrate it in a positive light. May light and joy and hope expressed in our feature shine on you all this September! Ruth Carson Communications Co-ordinator ruthcarson@csm.ie Young Mercy Leaders and MECPATHS Catherine McAuley calls on us to never speak with contempt of any nation, profession, or class of people. In her day, there were few groups in society viewed with greater contempt than women and girls in prostitution. Sadly, cultural attitudes to these women and girls have generally evolved little since then. As a society we all too often deride and dehumanise those in the sex trade. They are the butt of jokes, a target of mockery and derision, a class of people wholly removed from our daily lives. Profane euphemisms for 'prostitute' are used to insult and disparage women. Historically, this attitude became entrenched because of the association of overt sexuality with immorality; women 4

in prostitution were using their sexuality to lead otherwise upstanding men astray. They were commodifying their sexuality to profit from immorality. And yet, everywhere you look today you see the commercialisation of female sexuality for profit. Women are sexualised to sell everything from chewing gum to sports cars. This kind of imagery can even include strong elements of violence against women, trivialising sexual and violent abuse and exploiting it to make money. This is the social context in which the sex trade happens, and, by extension, human trafficking for sexual exploitation. If we are to understand the nature of this trade in human beings, we must understand the broader context of gender inequality in which it occurs. This was the main theme of one of the workshops attended by participants of the recent Young Mercy Leadership Pilgrimage in Baggot Street. For the 69 young people from Ireland and America, most of whom were women, the reality of our highly sexualised society poses problems, even dangers, on a daily basis. During the workshop, the pilgrims were challenged to examine the sex trade as a point on a spectrum of gender inequality on which all women and girls are placed. Can it be surprising that in a society that normalises violence against women to sell designer shoes, one in four women will experience violent abuse at some stage in their lives? Can there be no link between the fact that we are constantly bombarded by images of women as primarily glamorous sexual objects, and the fact that when a woman achieves a high political office she is scrutinised for her outfit as well as her policies? Considering these questions, the pilgrims had lively discussions about the kind of abuse women experience on the street and online, and the pervasive 'rape culture' that has become more prevalent in recent years. Such conversations are key to understanding and addressing the sex trade because as long as we continue to 'other' those in prostitution, and see the attitudes and behaviours that perpetuate the sex trade as something wholly removed from ourselves and our experiences, then we will never tackle the inequality that is the root of this sexual exploitation. Ruth Kilcullen MECPATHS Campaign Manager Elizabeth Davis Seminars At the invitation of CLT, Elizabeth Davis, Congregational Leader of the Sisters of Mercy in Newfoundland visited Ireland in July and gave two thought provoking and inspiring seminars. She visited Cork, Sligo, Tullamore and Dublin and covered two motivating topics. We are delighted to present these seminars to the Congregation to be viewed online. All you need do is to place the link to the seminar you would like to view into the address bar on the internet browser and press play. The first seminar was called Building Community and Healing Earth and can be viewed by copying the link and pasting it into the address bar in your internet browser. Does Religious Life matter anymore? (link below) Congregational Leadership Team Around the Congregation: Embracing the Mystery: Living Transformation LCWR 2016 The words Mystery, Contemplation, Reflection, Transformation and Love arose again and again at this year s LCWR Conference where the theme was Embracing the Mystery: Living Transformation. You may be aware that in recent years the Conference has placed great emphasis on Contemplative Dialogue and this year we continued to use the contemplative process in our conversations and sharing. Liz Sweeney SSJ describes it as a contemplative way of being together; a way of engaging in meaningful conversations that are rooted in deep listening. We listen from an inner silence that creates a space where something new can emerge. We come together in a circle of peers, of equals (where no one is an expert, no one is teaching, dominating, persuading). 6

We come with the intention of creating a field of presence and love by grounding our awareness in our hearts, our Source, our interiority. At the same time, we offer ourselves wholeheartedly to creating communion in this circle as we intentionally listen for something new to emerge. In her address titled Fostering the Evolution of Love Liz spoke of the spiral of human evolution highlighting the expressions of love at the various stages. She went on to talk of four facets of our awareness; 1) the interior of I which is known only to the person themselves, 2) the exterior of I which is observable in behaviours, body language etc., 3) the exterior of WE which is observable in the systems, practices etc that we have developed and 4) the interior of WE which is our culture, what we value. Contemplative dialogue is an important way for a group to learn to tune in to and become aware of the interior of their particular WE, a way of finding, creating, generating a new interior of WE. Liz referred to this awareness as a collective consciousness that binds us as one. If the culture of that WE is one of contemplation, deep listening, creative thinking, inclusive love, dialogue, welcoming diversity, mutual respect, then we are in a place to engage in contemplative dialogue. Without that harmony and coherence we are not in a place to engage in contemplative dialogue. In her Keynote address titled Finding Ground in an Age of Groundlessness Margaret Wheatley suggested that we are called to be careful listeners for the still small voice that is leading us to the edge. The Spirit she said speaks as loudly as I am willing to listen to. Being in relationship with God, Holy Mystery includes possibilities and risks. We are invited to surrender our own plans, our own goals, our own desires, certainties and arrogance and to wait and listen. Margaret invited us to reflect on who it is we want to be in the world at this time of turmoil when the fabric of society is being ripped apart. Instinctively we want to do something about the suffering in the world, the 65.5 million people who are without a country and without hope. Yet, we know we cannot solve it. The challenge now is to stay with people in their suffering, stay with perseverance, patience, tolerance and with heart. Talking about the way we are living now she noted that some writers refer to us as future eaters while a Peruvian poet suggests that we are undoing the future. For Margaret contemplation is the only way forward for us to be the presence of peace and love in the world. Hope is a state of mind, not of the world. Hope, in this deep and powerful sense, is not the same as joy that things are going well, or willingness to invest in enterprises that are obviously heading for success, but rather an ability to work for something because it is good. Vaclav Havel Other addresses given at the Conference included Leading from the Allure of Holy Mystery: Contemplation and Transformation by Pat Farrell OSF and the Presidential address titled Transformation - an Experiment in Hope given by Marcia Allen CSJ. Both of these talks and other materials are available on the LCWR website. 7

Rosaline O Connor U.S. Province The House of the Planter is known by the trees These words from Austin Clarke's poem came to mind as the bus from Dublin to Derry wound its way northwards through a seamless landscape. Like the astronauts looking at earth hanging as a blue jewel in space I realised that the only borders in the universe are on Earth and made by us humans. Nature wisely ignores them! I was on my way to St. Columb s Church-of-Ireland Cathedral to open an Icon Exhibition there for Holy Week and Easter. The Dean of the Cathedral, readily supported the exhibition as a way of furthering peace and reconciliation and gave a very warm welcome to all who were gathered for the event. The awareness of Ulster s history stayed with me as I entered the beautiful and splendid 17th century cathedral. It was the first cathedral built in Europe after the reformation. It was intended as a place of worship for those who came onto the land from Scotland and England during the plantation or colonization of Ulster. Native landowners were driven into mountainous and poor lands to eke out a living. The painful legacy of these events was very much with me as I entered this great cathedral. At the lectern the golden eagle s wings supported my few written notes. As I looked around the Congregation I could see my iconography friends from Derry who had worked with helpers from the Cathedral to organize and set up the event. The grand sweep of the cathedral brought my gaze from the altar to the great doors at the aisle s end. Down along each side I could see our seventy Icons depicting images of the Blessed Trinity, Christ, the Virgin and the saints as they glowed in the afternoon sun. I was delighted to welcome everybody to the event in the tongue of my ancestors. As I spoke about the art of Iconography and the contemplative and sacred nature of this work, I became aware of a presence and something shifted within me. With a sudden clarity I saw that this Cathedral was a sacred and holy place despite the great suffering and pain of its beginnings. As I looked around me I could see many symbolic features in the cathedral that speak of Christ and the blessed Trinity. The sunlight coming through the stained glass windows 8

lighting up for us the saintly figures, reminds us that the whole community of saints surrounds us. The vaulted ceiling speaks of the great heavens and all of creation. The pillars are the powerful and compassionate arms of God holding the whole universe together. The sanctuary and altar-space draws us into the place of worship and liturgy to celebrate and praise God. The wood and stone and glass and us humans, are kin for we have all evolved from earth, our mother and our home. We are all Earth! So when we pray and worship and celebrate our God, it is Earth that prays and worships and celebrates through us and is held in the great arms of the Creator. St. Columb s Cathedral in itself is an icon and a wonderful sacred space for the Icon exhibition. The St. Columb s newsletter estimated that over two thousand visitors came to the Cathedral and the exhibition during Holy Week and into the Easter season. The bus homing to Dublin crossed the new Bridge of Peace over the Foyle. Through the back window I could see the city of Derry moving away from us. Outlined against the sky were two great spires, one of St. Columb s Church-of-Ireland Cathedral and the other of St. Eugene s Catholic Cathedral. As they moved into the veil of the horizon they became like hands joined, reaching upwards in prayer for that peace that comes dropping slow, dropping from the veils of morn to where the cricket sings. We turned a corner and the image vanished. But as I dozed my way home the song of the engine became that of a singing cricket. Was I dreaming, or what? Rosaleen Hogan rsm South Central Province Walk Gently on Earth This is the title of an up-coming book from the Western Province. It began as a submission in response to a nomination by the NGO Vita, with which the sisters in the West are in partnership. However, it has now become the story of many large projects, as well as a multitude of stories of individual lifestyles of sisters, all centring on harmonious relationship with Earth. While not exhaustive, it is hoped that this collection can inspire us to even more radical awareness of how we need to change our way of living, so that all may simply live. The first part of the book focuses on the history of awareness-raising in membership, through interest in Earth Literacy and how this has been influenced through Chapter discernment. It concludes with the story of how this process is being shared with the wider community. The second part of the book tells of the larger entities, which have some emphasis on living in an earth-friendly manner. It goes through the more obvious projects like An Gáirdín (The Garden), where environmentally-friendly living is practiced and different skills, such as the preservation of biodiversity and carbon neutral building, are taught. Associated with this is the work done in primary schools in County Mayo under the auspices of An Fóidín Glas (The Green Sod). Mercy involvement in 9

Rural Development enjoys less publicity but has had huge influence on farm communities of the West. This part of the book includes the wonders of the Peace Garden in Mullaghmore; how Hope House encourages its clientele to work in their beautiful garden as they return to a healthier way of life; and the Galilee Community near Boyle, where prayer is shared in a natural setting. It also covers how the sisters of the Western Province raise money to share with different causes through Mine Is Yours; the Justice Desk, which raises awareness on such issues as the dangers of fracking; and our involvement with the other Irish Provinces in MECPATHS. The third part of the book looks more at how individual sisters and communities play their part in walking gently on Earth. Activities such as recycling, composting, care in the use of such resources as water and energy are celebrated. Linked with this is the joy so many of the sisters take in gardening, both for the beautification of the natural environment and the growth of fruit and vegetable. In addition to this the ethical investments of the Province are recognised. It also explores how provincial membership and the NGO Vita form a partnership, which betters the lives of people in Ethiopia. Maura and Noreen share seeds with their neighbours, as together they work towards harmonious relationship with Earth. The book finishes with provincial engagement in the Mercy International Reflection Project. The objective of this inclusion is to show our awareness that we are part of a larger Mercy picture and that any change in lifestyle needs to be ongoing. The hope is that the book will be ready to be launched close to Mercy Day. You know what to do watch this space! Maura Walsh looks over the shoulders of Teresa Sheeran, Francesca McGuire and Mairéad O Keeffe in Dún Mhuire, Athlone, as they work together on their project for MIRP. Suzanne Ryder rsm Western Province Pilgrimage to Longford Cathedral The Western Province, Ireland celebrated the Year of Mercy with a Pilgrimage to St. Mels Cathedral, Longford on 6th August. This was a special time as the 6th August was the feast of the Transfiguration. The feast of the Transfiguration and the story of the rebirth and rising of St Mel s Cathedral from rubble and ashes have particular significance this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Both incidences remind us of God s faithful and transforming love. 10

Sr Deirdre McKenna, RSM, Fr Peter McVerry, S.J, and Transition Years students from Scoil Muire Longford, facilitated a beautiful and inspiring ritual of prayer, light and reconciliation. They were joined by pilgrims from the other provinces. All took part in the Ritual of Prayer, Light and Reconciliation. There was a wonderful atmosphere in the Cathedral of peace and love. The pilgrimage was an opportunity to be touched by God s mercy and compassion and to renew faith in the God who consoles, comforts and instils hope. The theme was journeying to new life. Truly God s mercy was living and visible and we could say God s Mercy found me. Sincere thanks for accompanying us on the inward and outward pilgrimage and to all who participated in the planning team that enabled this wonderful pilgrimage to take place. Teresina Daly rsm Western Province The Bigger Picture: The IN and OUT Province Possible Implications for the Sisters of Mercy Northern Province and Brexit. I remember sitting up most of the night watching the results of the Referendum on whether the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland would vote to be in or out of the European Union. As a member of a province which straddles both sides of the border, I was naturally concerned and more so when I thought about the implications of an EXIT vote. Ireland, as our Celtic history reflects, has always been an integral part of Europe. St. Columbanus, the Irish missionary who shared his faith across Europe, was famously the first person to describe himself as a European. Columbanus and his followers established more than 100 centres of learning throughout the continent. Whether we live in the Republic or Northern Ireland we are historically European and our young people get this concept clearly! 11

In 1998, for the first time since the British imposed partition in 1922, the people of Ireland, North and South, joined together in voting for change in the referendum known as the Good Friday Agreement. The Good Friday Agreement replaced decades of conflict and injustice (lived through by many of us who resided North of the border), with a deal that put powersharing and equality at the heart of government. The Agreement was endorsed by 71 percent of people in the North and 94 percent in the South of Ireland. History was made and work began to establish all island institutions that for nearly two decades have secured peace and justice in Ireland. That achievement and legacy is now at some risk due to the shock victory of pro-brexit campaigners. In the vote about remaining or staying in the European Union, voters in the North voted by 55 percent to stay in the Union. Voters in Scotland also voted by 52 percent to remain, while people in England and Wales voted in favour of an exit. The exit vote has caused turmoil in the markets, with the value of sterling falling sharply. A major concern for those of us who live North of the border is the possible re-emergence of an unwelcome physical border of checkpoints, British military bases and custom controls with all their many implications. Will our near vanished border now become an international frontier between the European Union and an external state which we the people of the North of Ireland did not vote for in the first place? An additional ingredient that will, potentially, have a far greater impact on Ireland, north and south, is the determination of the Scottish National Party (SNP) to seek a 2 nd referendum on independence from the United Kindgom, following the Brexit vote. The Scottish parliament has made it clear it wishes to remain within the European Union. If Scotland wins its independence, it is likely to precipitate the rapid break-up of the United Kingdom. The major financial subventions required to maintain the Northern Ireland status quo, would then fall solely on Wales and, primarily, England. It s a burden they don t need and don t want. Economist David McWilliams Sunday Business Post article (July 24, 2016) looking at the impact of Brexit and a Scottish Exit from the UK offers much food for thought, especially his conclusion: Conor Cruse O Brien noted that the Unionists last battle will not be with Irish nationalists but will be with English nationalists. As Sisters of Mercy, it is important to remind ourselves, however, that the Brexit referendum had little to do with Ireland s economic interests or even with reform of the European Union itself. Instead, it was precipitated by a toxic propaganda dialogue opposed to immigration. In addition, the new leader of the Conservative party in Britain is of the view that the United Kingdom should withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights, which was and is a central component of the Good Friday Agreement. This has serious consequences for us as Women of Mercy belonging to a Congregation which has crisscrossed the globe in order to educate and nurse immigrant populations. How have we, or should we, engage, inform and respond to the public debate on this issue? 12

As Pope Francis warned in his 2014 address in Strasbourg: In recent years, as the European Union expanded, there has been a growing mistrust on the part of some of its citizens towards institutions considered to be aloof, engaged in laying down rules perceived as insensitive to individual peoples, if not downright harmful. As we all noted, in the final weeks, the referendum conversation was not about the EU at all but rather about over-strained public resources, the shortage of homes and the precarious job market and then the finger pointing began. Migrants and immigrants were to blame. But rather than addressing these issues directly, the Leave Campaign sold the idea that abandoning Europe would solve them. Britain s working class men and women were angry. Angry at the banks and the corporations for the 2008 financial crisis, annoyed at immigrants for driving down their wages and taking their jobs. People felt excluded. Anger was a determining factor in what was largely a protest vote. As we Sisters of Mercy who live in a province which straddles an imposed international border, the legacy of British colonialism in Ireland, perhaps the time has come for us to have some dialogue about this reality in which we find ourselves. Some of us may say it does not affect ME. Some of us may feel uninterested. Some may think here they (up north) go again! However, I hope some of us will feel compelled to read, think and speak up and out especially when people are targeted because of their origin, culture or skin. As never before we must do our part to promote integration and stand in solidarity with all vulnerable peoples who live in our midst. As Pope Francis reminds us Solidarity is not charity but rather a means of creating opportunities for all the inhabitants of our cities, to live in dignity. It is the lack of solidarity that the EXIT has so cruelly exposed. The culture of exclusion has replaced the culture of encounter. Rather than engage with the peripheries, our political and economic leaders reinforced the centre. Rather than welcoming the foreigner, praising them for their contributions to our faith, our economy and society we left the immigration issue to be fought over between a poor Polish worker and UK worker both in a race to the bottom of the wage scale. I bet if Catherine McAuley were here today she would ask each of us to be bridge builders at this crucial time in history. To be Women of Mercy and Women known for our Welcome. Women who open doors to the poor and newcomers seeking acceptance and who know that being a migrant is not a crime but a summons to greater commitment on behalf of the dignity of every human being. 13
