2 There are no words to describe what it means to me to create the image that will remain in the memory, associated with a huge meeting between the youth and God, in the presence of Pope Benedict XVI. How pleasant it is to be an instrument of the Lord, using the talents He gives us. The World Youth Day in 2013 has already been transforming my life and the lives of the Catholic Youth. 3 Introduction The visual identity of an organization is one of its main patrimonies. By the systematic use of a visual identity, the values of an institution are transmitted visually, which thus enables an audience to recognize and helps them to adhere to those values. The purpose of this manual is to present information and guidelines for the proper use of the WYD Rio2013 logo. The principles and rules of the graphic elements that belong to the visual identity will assist in its application in media communication, aimed at the diffusion of the logo. The implementation and standardization of the visual identity will help to establish and strengthen the image of the event. Ignoring the intended principles can damage the institution. 6 World Youth Day World Youth Day shows the world a testimony of a living, transforming faith, and the face of Christ in each young person. And as stars of this event, through these young people's faces, the face of Christ is shown to the world. It all started when about 300 thousand young people met with Pope John Paul II at Saint Peter's Square at the Vatican in In 1985 the Holy Father announced the World Youth Day Institution, and the meetings with the Pope continued, in Rome, Italy (First WYD, 1986 [Diocesan]); Buenos Aires, Argentina (1987); Santiago de Compostela, Spain (1989); Czestochowa, Poland (1991); Denver, USA (1993); Manila, Philippines (1995); Paris, France (1997); Rome, Italy (2000); Toronto, Canada (2002). WYDs with Pope Benedict XVI began in Cologne, Germany (2005) and have continued on to Sydney, Australia (2008) and Madrid, Spain (2011). The next meeting will be in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 23 to 28 July, The cities that host World Youth Day acquire a real 'different color', with hundreds different nationalities mixing and intermingling. The event consists of catechesis, testimony, sharing, demonstrations of love for the Church and for others, music festivals and cultural activities. Ultimately, it is a fraternal and diverse encounter of hearts that believe and are motivated by the same hope. 6

7 Visual Identity The visual identity of an institution or product is the combination of graphic or communication elements linked to its logo, as well as colors, textures, forms, graphics, and typography. Visual Signature This is a graphic representation of WYD Rio2013 consisting of the symbol and logotype. The concept of the symbol will be explained in the following pages. 8 Concept Scripture shows us a necessity to reflect directly the image of Jesus and the meaning of being a disciple. The Gospel of Saint Matthew tells us that Jesus met His disciples on a mountain after His resurrection. Likewise, the symbol of Rio de Janeiro, Christ the Redeemer, is also located at the top of a mountain and is a monument well known around the world. The theme is a command proclaimed by Jesus Himself; for this reason the logo has His image in the center of the picture. Land of the Holy Cross Sugar Loaf Together, the elements in the symbol resemble a heart. And the heart has become the center of faith among the nations. In 2013, Brazil will be the center of youth during World Youth Day. Also, this composition represents Christian disciples, who have Jesus in their hearts. Christ the Redeemer Brazilian Shore In the picture, the arms of Christ the Redeemer go beyond the border of the heart as an allusion to the welcoming arms of God awaiting the youth from the whole world in Brazil. It represents our nation's cordial and generous reception. The upper part (in green) was inspired by the lines of the Sugar Loaf, universal symbol of the city of Rio de Janeiro, and the cross reinforces the meaning of the Brazilian territory known as Land of the Holy Cross. The bottom part (in blue) represents the Brazilian shore, and the green and yellow represent the colors of the Brazilian flag. Disciple's heart 8

9 Principles ŸThe logo may be associated with all WYD Rio2013 graphic materials, pre-wyd, and/or 'Bote Fé' events, meetings where the symbols will be present (Pilgrim Cross and Our Lady Icon), and websites and blogs of participant groups. ŸA virtual signature from the Responsible Institution is mandatory in any kind of graphic material that has not been produced by the Organization Committee. ŸWhen the logo is used along with different elements of identification, such as parish names, dioceses, pastoral groups, church movements, events or other institutions, the integrity of these places/events should be assured. ŸIn cases where the logo is used alone with any kind of alteration in its shape, color or texture, the application of the complete virtual signature (Symbol + Logo) in the same material is mandatory. ŸTo apply the WYD Rio2013 logo in any kind of communication medium, always refer to the digital archive from the official website ŸIt is not permitted to attempt to draw or otherwise compose the visual signature in any way. Doing so risks losing the quality of the image. 9

12 Institutional Colors The virtual signature of WYD Rio2013 consists of three main colors, which should not be altered under any circumstance. The improper use or alteration of these colors is detrimental to the characteristics of the logo. 15 Typography The layout of a text is also part of logo identification. To keep it standard, the rule is to use a main and a secondary font. Main Font The main font is used in titles and stationery that need to be highlighted and should not be altered under any circumstance. The improper use or alteration of the typography is detrimental to the characteristics of the logo. The main font is: Signika. Main Font The secondary font is used for official graphic materials: prints, stationery, websites, etc. It can be substituted or combined with other fonts if necessary. The secondary font is Verdana, a basic font available in most computer operational systems. 15

18 Maximum Size Reduction Borderline The logo may be reduced to a minimum size of 20mm in its horizontal version, and to 10mm in its vertical version, respecting the minimum resolution of 300dpi in prints. The borderline is the minimum distance from the elements. The borderline must be maintained to assure the legibility of the virtual signature. 19 Prohibitions It is prohibited to alter the space between the symbol and the logo. It is prohibited to alter the logo font. It is prohibited to distort any element of the logo. It is prohibited to apply symbols on top of any graphic element in the logo. 19
