Admitting the Problem, Romans 7:14-25 (January 15, 2017) 14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. 15 For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. 17 So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22 For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, 23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin. PRAY In just a few weeks our church will launch a Celebrate Recovery (CR) program. For months now a leadership team has been meeting on Thursday nights and working hard to get ready for this launch. Celebrate Recovery is, as you might expect, a recovery program, a twelve-step program, like Alcoholics Anonymous. And when most people think of CR and the people involved in it I think it s fair to say they typically think of people who have some kind of substance addiction they are trying to overcome. It s not just for those with substance abuse in their past, but it s also for people with process addictions, or non-chemical addictions. These might include issues with sex, pornography, or co-dependency. Today, we re going to start a three-week sermons series leading up to the launch of Celebrate Recovery, but these sermons aren t going to be in-depth explanations every week of what CR is or how you can be involved. They ll be Bible expositions, gospel sermons like I hope we have every week at Grace. But I did deliberately choose three passages from the Bible for these three sermons that I thought would helpfully illustrate some of the principles behind Celebrate Recovery. And I m doing this for three reasons: first, I know some of you just have never been around CR or AA or any of the other twelve-step programs, and since one is about to start at Grace Bible I want to make sure you know what s going on. Second, I know that a lot of people in recovery programs feel that the church is one of the least safe places on the planet for them. They fear being judged, they fear being shunned, they fear they will never be accepted because they will be seen somehow as damaged goods. And they have good reason to feel that way, because that s exactly how many churches have treated them in the past J.D. Shaw 1

So I m preaching these sermons because if you are coming to Grace because of CR or if you feel that you need to be in a recovery program I want you to know that the pastors and the elders at Grace want you to feel as welcome here as you possibly can. We all want this to be a home for you. That gets me to the third reason I want to put some focus on Celebrate Recovery for the next few weeks. The twelve-steps of AA and the eight principles of Celebrate Recovery are, properly understood, just an outline of the Christian life. It s one way, but not the only way, of describing what it looks like to follow the Lord Jesus. And so my hope is this sermons series helps do away with the idea some of us might have that there are two classes of people: those who basically have their acts together over here and then those people over there in recovery. According to the Bible, that view couldn t be more wrong. The Bible says no one has it all together. We are all sinners, we ve all hurt others and we ve been hurt by others and we ve all hurt ourselves, and therefore we are all in recovery. You don t have to call it that, you can just call it the Christian life, but we all need it. We are all in recovery. This sermon series is not just for people in formal recovery program this sermon series is for everyone, because we all need the same thing. Each week we ll look at one of the twelve steps in recovery programs. Today, I ll read the first step. This is the first formal step you take if you become a part of a recovery program: We admitted we were powerless over our addictions and compulsive behaviors, that our lives had become unmanageable. The first step is to admit you have a problem, and I don t know of a better place to go in the Bible to show you the depth of our problem that Romans 7. In it, the apostle Paul talks about his struggle with sin. And we ll look at this text under three headings. First, Paul says, I am sold under sin. Second, Paul says, I delight in the law of God. Third, Paul says, I am delivered through Jesus Christ our Lord. First, I am sold under sin. That s verse 14: For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. That s the language of slavery. Paul is saying here that he is a slave to sin. That s a powerful image when you know what a slave is. A slave is someone who is owned and completely dominated by someone else. Whether you re talking about the race-based chattel slavery of early American history or the slavery that existed in ancient Rome, a slave had no rights. Your life and everything about you is controlled by someone else. You re told when to eat and when to sleep. They control your time, they control your work, they control your relationships. Paul says that s what s sin does to all of us, except that it s worse than that. Because in human slavery, as awful as it was, at least your mind could be free. At least your spirit could be free. Someone could take away all your possessions and make you work for 2017 J.D. Shaw 2

them under the threat of punishment or death, but they couldn t directly corrupt your ability to think clearly or pray. But sin can. We are all too accustomed to think of sin as a list of bad behaviors: lying, stealing, adultery. But the Bible says that sin is in fact a spiritual force it has a will of its own, it has an agency of its own. In the book of Genesis, we read about the rivalry between Cain and Abel, the sons of Adam and Eve. Cain gets angry, because he thinks God likes his brother more than him. The LORD said to Cain, Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it. Genesis 4:6-7. Sin is compared to a wild animal, lying in wait, ready to pounce at any moment and drag Cain away. And Paul says this force has gotten inside of us and messed up everything. Romans 7:18b: For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. According to Paul, the flesh is who we are by nature, how we come into the world not just our bodies, but also our minds, our emotions, our wills. And now every part of us, our flesh, is corrupted by sin. This is the Christian doctrine of total depravity. A lot of people hear that term and misunderstand it, and think that Christians are a bunch of pessimists when it comes to people because we believe that people are as bad as they could possibly be we are all totally depraved in our behavior. That s not what Christians believe. We know that man is not as bad as he could possibly be the world would be unlivable if each human being was as bad as he could possibly be. For various reasons (family, culture, government, education, and conscience) a lot of our potential for wickedness is restrained. Christians do not believe that humans are as wicked or corrupt as we could possibly be, but that every part of each human being has been corrupted. There s nothing perfect about any of us. We are all flawed, and every part of all of us contains flaws, and sin has gotten into our flesh and corrupted our ability to think, our ability to reason, our motivations, our emotions, our desires our perceptions of the world around us. Everything about us isn t as bad as it could be, but everything about us is messed up. We are, in that sense, sold under sin. And because everything about us is corrupted, we can t do what we want to do. Romans 7:15: 15 For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Romans 7:19: 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Does that sound familiar to anyone? Do I even have to illustrate our inability to do what we know we need to do in a given situation? You re married, and you fight with your spouse, and you know you should not say something mean in this situation and make it worse but you can t help it you say it anyway. You don t understand what you do J.D. Shaw 3

You struggle with pornography and you know you ve got to stop looking at it, but you can t help it you look at it anyway. You know another taking another drink is not the answer, but you can t help it you take it anyway. Friends, here s my question: do you believe this describes you? I do not understand my own actions. I do not do the good I want. Do you admit the problem? Friends, if you can admit it, you re in good company because the apostle Paul can sympathize. Now it s at this point that a lot of people say, Wait, a minute. I used to feel that way, I used to be a mess, I used to be out of control, but now I m a Christian. I ve straightened my life out. I ve been delivered from all that. That gets us to the second point. Second, Paul says, I delight in God s law. Did you know that one of the biggest debates over the last two thousand years in New Testament studies has been over Romans 7? And here s the question: is Paul talking in Romans 7 about himself before he became a Christian or after? That s the big debate. Millions of words have been written on this issue over the years. And there are a lot of Christians and scholars, men and women over the years we should all admire for their learning and study, who say Paul in this passage must be talking about himself before he became a Christian. They say, No Christian could say he is sold under sin. To be a Christian means to be delivered from the dominion of sin. No Christian could say nothing good dwells in me. If you ve received the Holy Spirit and been born again you would never say these things, so Paul has to be writing about his experience before he came to know Jesus. That s is a legitimate reading of Romans 7, and some brilliant people have held that view, yet I think without a shadow of a doubt that it is the wrong reading. Paul here is writing about his experience as a Christian as a Christian, he s still under sin and as a Christian he still does not understand what he does. This reading makes the most sense of the passage itself. First, in the first half of Romans 7, verses 1-13, Paul is clearly talking about his life before he met Jesus (everyone agrees on this), and he uses the past tense. But in verse 14, he switches to using the present tense. Now that s incredibly misleading if he s writing about his past the whole time instead of moving forward writing about his present experience as a Christian. Second, in Romans 7:22 Paul says, For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being A non-christian cannot delight in God s law. More on this later. Finally, the next to last thing Paul says in Romans 7 after he talks about his sins is this: Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! Romans 7:24-25a. Now, if Paul had been talking about his life before he met Jesus Christ, it would make sense that he stop right there in his rejoicing, and then move on to another topic. But he doesn't! Verse 25b: So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin. He 2017 J.D. Shaw 4

talks about being delivered by Jesus, and then goes right back to talking about how he s a slave to sin. That ending makes absolutely no sense if Paul is talking about how weak he used to be before he came to Christ, but now as a Christian he has nothing but victory. That reading makes the most sense of the text but also of our experience. When I was a kid I remember singing an Isaac Watts hymn a lot at church, Alas, And Did My Savior Bleed? That hymn is a wonderful meditation on the cross of Jesus Christ. But the version we sang had a refrain attached to it that was added almost two hundred years later Watts didn t write it. And it went like this: At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, and the burden of my heart rolled away. It was there by faith I received my sight, and now I am happy all the day! That s the way Christianity has been portrayed to a lot of us. If you ll become a Christian and follow all the rules if you ll pray in faith, confess all known sin, claim all the promises, rebuke the devil, plead the blood, and thank God ahead of time for the answer, then you can be happy all the day. But Paul is saying that even though he is now a Christian, the ugliness of his sin is still with him. He s not happy all the day. A lot of people, a lot of professing Christians, desperately wish Paul said something like this: Before I met Jesus, I was bad and did everything wrong and was full of self-doubt and ugliness. But then I met Jesus, and now I m good and I do everything right, and it s nothing but peace and calmness and blessing, and it s easy and wonderful. Do you know why they want Paul to say that? Because they want to believe that about themselves. They want to believe, just like we all want to believe, that we have arrived and the struggle is over. But according to Paul, the struggle continues and it doesn t get easier. You say, How can that be? Aren t Christians born again? Aren t Christians the temple of the Holy Spirit? Then how in the world does the struggle always continue? Why doesn t it get easier? I think the best way to understand how this works is to think of it like this: the Christian s struggle against sin is always there, and the struggle never gets easier, but the sins and habits and hang-ups we struggle with do change. We do grow and get victory over certain sins of our flesh, only to discover and wage war against new sins we previously knew nothing about. My family and I moved last month sold the house we d lived in since we moved to Oxford and moved to a new one. And of course when we sold our house, we had to move everything out of it. But I was reminded of a certain axiom of moving that I had forgotten: it takes about four times as many trips to get stuff out of your house than you planned for. I would look at a room and see the furniture in it, and think, No big deal to move the furniture this won t take long. But I d move the furniture and realize there was stuff under the bed I forgot. Then I d move all that and realize we didn t take the stuff off the wall. I do that and then remember there s a closet in that room I hadn t even looked at. On and on it went. It felt like it would never end. And the smaller things were the hardest things to move and took the most time J.D. Shaw 5

That s what the struggle against sin is like. When you first admit you have a problem, you see certain sins, and you deal with them. And after a while, you find that you do get some victory. You find you re delivered from those sins. But those sins are just the furniture in your house you haven t dealt with the stuff under the bed, in the attic, or stuff under the sink in the bathroom, or in the closet. You probably don't even know those sins are there. And you spend the rest of your life dealing with them. When you first start following Jesus, you might realize you have a problem with anger. You re blowing up at people all the time, friends are telling you it s a problem. And you think, Oh, man, I ve got to deal with this. But over time, over years, you find victory. One day you look up, and it s not the problem it used to be. You re not exploding on people like you used to. And you rejoice! But then, after several months you realize that underneath that anger was a need to control things that s why you d get so angry. You would get angry when you felt like things in your life were out of control. So you work on that need to control everything, and this takes even longer, years and years. But then one day you feel like you get delivered from that, and rejoice! But then underneath that, you find that really what was going on was that the real reason you needed to control everything and everyone was you didn t trust the people around you and you certainly trust God. And of course then you begin really struggling with that. The mark of a mature Christian is not necessarily that he is happy all the day. Rather, it is that he has a light in his life whereby he can see more and more of his sin, not just the furniture, the big obvious sins, but also the hidden sins, the motivations, the desires that are sinful, and then he repents of those, too. Our flesh is so messed up by sin that it s corrupted all the way down even after we start following Jesus, so while you as a Christian can gain victories in this life the struggle never ends. If you think you have it all together as a Christian, Paul says you re in denial. Third, Paul says, I am delivered through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let s go back to the big debate over Romans 7. Some have argued that Paul is writing here about his experience before he became a Christian by pointing out that in verse 22 he says he delights in God s law. And then they say, Didn t Paul delight in God s law before he became a Christian? Didn t he study it meticulously as a Pharisee before he met Jesus? It s of course true that before Paul became a Christian, he pored over God s law, he memorized God s law, he worked hard to obey it, and he taught it to others and pushed them to obey it. He was a moral person, and he followed all the rules. But he didn t delight in God s law. You know what he did? He used the law of God. He used the law to feel good about himself. He used it to feel superior to all those failures who couldn t keep the law of God like he could and be self-righteous. Lots of professing Christians do this today, and it s why a lot of people in recovery do not feel safe in a church. They ve met and been burned by modern-day, self-righteous, pre- Christian Pauls J.D. Shaw 6

But then, in the first part of Romans 7, verse 7, we read that when Paul thought he was at the top of his game, he came across the command, Do not covet, don't lust after the things other people have. It s not that he d never read the Tenth Commandment before, but this time it was like an arrow to the heart. He realized he coveted. It crushed him and it nearly killed him, because he realized that for first time in his life that he wasn t a good person and he couldn t obey the law of God. Paul s telling you here that before he became a Christian, when he obeyed the law back then, he never did it for God. He says, I never obeyed the law with delight. I only obeyed it to feel superior to others. I did it to put God in my debt and make God give me a good life. All along he thought he had been serving God, but really he d been serving himself, trying to get honor and respect. This whole time the furniture of sin in his life was still in the room. He d been working and working, but he hadn t gotten rid of any of it. He couldn t believe he d been so blind; it devastated him. Romans 7 tells you that by nature you are not a good person. Some of you don t have any problem with that. You can look back over your life and the mistakes you ve made and the way you ve hurt people and you don t even try to justify yourself anymore. If you re in a recovery program you must know this, right? You ve taken that first step. You ve formally admitted you re powerless. But there are some of us in this room, maybe most of us, who are still tempted to think we re good people. We don t really believe we re powerless. After all, we haven t made the mistakes those folks in recovery have. We ve managed our lives pretty well, we ve earned respect in the community, we ve made some money, we ve managed to stay married and raise our kids. We re tempted to think, I m not perfect, but all in all I ve done pretty well. I m not sure I m all that powerless. If that s you, do you know what the apostle Paul would say to you? He d say, You couldn t be a bigger fool than if you believe that. Romans 7 is Paul s treatise on the how delusional we really are when we think we re good. Listen, if anyone could have said he was a good person, it was the apostle Paul. We re not talking about some pastor who is supposed to have his act together here, but the apostle Paul! If anyone qualified to have the label spiritual giant applied to him, it was Paul. But he says his supposed goodness only serve to condemn him even more, because it blinded him to how hateful his heart really was. In fact, he calls himself a wretch do you know what a wretch is? A despicable or contemptible person. Friends, will you, along with Paul, admit you have a problem? Will you admit that even when you are supposedly serving God you re still doing it to make God owe you a good life? Will you admit you are broken and need to be in recovery? Because the good news of Jesus is only for those who admit they have a problem. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! Romans 7:24-25a. Notice Paul doesn t say, 2017 J.D. Shaw 7

Thanks be to God for Jesus Christ our Lord! or because of Jesus Christ but through. Why is that significant? For Paul everything hinged upon his union with Christ. He dared not relate to God except through Jesus Christ. Why? Because Jesus was his substitute. Jesus Christ did what you and I have not done. Not only was he honest, and sober, and treated women with complete respect and propriety, but he did it without an ounce of self-righteousness. He was never proud or arrogant. He always delighted in the law of God for its own sake, for the beauty of living the life God designed humans to live, and he never stopped loving people. But when he died on the cross he died the death of a wretch. He bore the wrath of God for sinners, but he did for us. He was our substitute. And if you believe that, then Jesus did it for you. And now God treats you like you were the one who was always honest, sober, respectful, loving, humble, and pure. Even if you know your life has been nothing but filth, it doesn t matter you are saved through Jesus Christ our Lord. He did it, and you re treated as if you did it. I am thankful for AA. I hesitate to ever say anything that could remotely be perceived as negative about it because it has helped so many people. But I praise God that Celebrate Recovery is coming to Grace, because in the program it s explicit and clear about Jesus, because only Jesus can really, truly heal. Say you encounter a disappointment in your life, say someone really hurts you, and as a result you choose to deal with that pain with an agent. It might be sex. It might be drugs. It might be alcohol. That s how addictions often start to deal with the pain. Those agents promise freedom at first, but of course over time they enslave you. Now, if you turn your care over only to God as you understand him, or to a vague higher power, my fear is that people will say, I m going to try my hardest, I m resisting with my willpower, and I hope that in some way God and my sponsor will help me resist the temptation to abuse those things. But when you turn your care over to the Lord Jesus Christ, you take that pain and you say, Yes, this person really hurt me. Yes, this disappointment in my life was severe. Yet thanks be to God through Jesus Christ my Lord. And what will happen is this: when you really see what Jesus Christ did for you on the cross, you ll be profoundly grateful. You heart will fill with thanksgiving. And a heart that is thankful is to some degree inoculated against temptation. Thanksgiving gives you a power to resist temptation than mere willpower ever will. Second, when you see how Jesus loved you on the cross, you ll experience healing. Yes, the wounds are real, and they are deep. But nothing heals wounds like being loved, and in Jesus Christ you see the love of God on display in your life J.D. Shaw 8

We may not all be dealing with traditional addiction issues but we are all dealing with the pain. Will you admit that? Will you admit you have a problem? If so, look to the cross, and say, Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen J.D. Shaw 9
