Strategic Context For several months the Strategic Ministry Planning Committee (SMP) and True North Strategic Advisors have been meeting to develop a Strategic Plan for the church. From this Strategic Ministry Plan the leadership has identified the mission, Connecting people to Jesus, that is foundational to the mandate of transforming lives. We want to be intentional in our daily walk as followers of Christ and in reaching people of all generations who do not yet know Him. With a common vision, we are excited about the many ministry opportunities for St. Michael Lutheran Church to transform lives with the light of Christ in the community and beyond (Matthew 5:14-16). 4
Strategic Planning Process Documentation All-Church Survey Depth Interviews Focus Groups Leadership Retreat Evaluation Ministry Focus Mandate, Motives, Mission, Map, Marks Supporting Strategies Implementation Measureable Goals / Dates Dedicated Leadership Committed Members 5
The Uniqueness of the Church A church will A unique vision will shape the culture inside the church that impacts the church s outside. discover the DNA of its neighborhood focus on discovering and developing its strengths draw attention to its uniqueness by making it obvious, attractive, and remarkable let people know why it is special and what God is doing uniquely through the church s mission 6
Mandate, Motives, Mission, Map and Marks* Mandate: A clear and concise statement that defines what the church is ultimately supposed to be doing. Motives: These are the core values in a church s DNA that guide the direction for ministry and reveals the strength of the church to get there. Mission: The core purpose of the church stated with clarity. Map: A guide to help each person connect to Jesus and one another in the church and out in the community. Marks: The Christian life-style and beliefs found in each person who is connected to Jesus. * from Church Unique Will Mancini 7
Mandate (Vision) I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect (Romans 12:1 2). 8
Motives (Core Values) Christ-centered And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him (Colossians 3:17). Discipleship-directed Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age (Matthew 28:19-20). Family-focused Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates (Deuteronomy 6:4-9). Mission-minded But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). 9

Worship Provide ongoing training and equipping for members so that they become more inviting toward church guests. (Guest Services) Upgrade internal and external signage and décor. Record the entire worship service and post on SMLC website weekly. Create three different types of services by choosing: More recent (within the last three years) music for Saturday night Periodically adding LSB liturgy to the 8:00a service Periodically adding songs not in LSB to the 10:45a service Train youth to assist with Children s Church, participate in puppet ministry, assist with the altar guild, and the like.
Strategies for the Mandate Discipleship Strategy #2 Connect people to Jesus and each other by being educationally directed in such a way that their daily walk is transformed. Children Bulletins Yearly Themes Testimonies 16
Discipleship Develop a Children s bulletin geared around the Pastor s sermons. Create a clear, annual thematic plan for Christian Education for Junior/Senior Youth through adults. Report stories of lives transformed through the Gospel.
Strategies for the Mandate A Family Environment Strategy #3 Connect people to Jesus and each other by focusing and offering a family-friendly environment that transforms families. ESM Outreach Mentors & Ambassadors Expanded Facilities 18
Family Develop relationships with families who send their children to ESM or St. Michael Pre-School and have no church home. Organize, recruit and train mentors/ ambassadors to call and invite ESM families to church, welcome them, and begin connecting them to the church s ministries. Research options and develop detailed plans to have the nursery moved to a better location. Make the church more secure for children by developing a check in/check out procedure. Vigorously promote and expand our ministry to senior adults.
Strategies for the Mandate Ministry Involvement Strategy #4 Connect people to Jesus and each other by equipping members to use their spiritual gifts in such a way that ministries are transformed. Teaching Discovering Using 20
Involvement Educate members on the value of discovering their spiritual gifts. Create a spiritual gift inventory for the Junior/Senior Youth. Help members discover their spiritual gifts. Educate members on ministry opportunities.
Strategies for the Mandate Mission Outreach Strategy #5 Connect people to Jesus and each other by witnessing locally and reaching globally to transform our mission outreach. Acts 1:8 Teams Mission Fairs Mission Trips 22
Missions Begin supporting missionaries who are members of St. Michael Involve people in community service Begin an Acts 1:8 Team Support an LCMS missionary Begin mission Sundays and mission fairs. Reignite domestic and foreign mission trips.
Strategies for the Mandate Long-term Sustainability Strategy #6 Connect people to Jesus and each other by pursuing best practices in strategic planning, financial management and governance to ensure a long-term sustainability that transforms St. Michael. Leadership Training Church Branding Debt Reduction 24
Long-term Sustainability Every major and supporting strategy will be assigned to a person/board to enhance accountability. Update the website and create a church brand. Begin to build a staffing reserve for new paid staff positions. Establish an annual review retreat each August to refresh the strategic plan. Initiate a balanced budget including principle and interest on long-term debt. Begin a three-year campaign in 2017 to pay off remaining debt and raise funds for building expansion by 2020.
Conclusion Where there is no vision, the people perish (Proverbs 29:18). With this Strategic Plan comes the Mandate of Transformation (our vision) for each one of us. Once in place, our ministry will be powerfully positioned to know what we are doing, where we are going, and how we will get there. 26
