3 A Pastoral Letter... With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation's wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves, and with all nations. Dear Friends, Some of you may perhaps recognise the above words from Abraham Lincoln's 2 nd Inaugural Address, after his election to a second term as US President in They are truly amazing words, given that they were spoken during the closing months of the American Civil War, a fratricidal conflict which not only took the lives of hundreds of thousands of people, but engendered huge bitterness and desires for revenge. One person who attended this address was John Wilkes Booth, who was to assassinate Lincoln a few short weeks later. I find them inspiring words from a man who was not a conventional churchgoer, and whose Christian faith was his own, synthesized from many influences and traditions, but deeply held and followed. I would like to pick out two phrases, firstly - With malice towards none; with charity for all. I think these words are words which should echo in our minds whenever we are in the midst of conflict, whether on an international, national, or local scale, whether with individuals or communities, God calls us always to act with malice towards none and with charity for all. In modern terms, I think we might render the word charity as compassion. I am sometimes asked can we love people we do not like? It may be impossible for us to love someone in the sense of feeling an emotional warmth towards them, but we can always have compassion. Everyone with whom we come into contact, or who is far away but whom our actions affect, is someone for whom we are called to have compassion, to try to understand and help, even if we can't bring ourselves to like them. One of the strangest things I have found in Church life is that many people think that having a strong belief in something actually absolves them from having to act with compassion and understanding. It does not. Compassion is the bedrock of our following of Jesus Christ. Remember that many of the people Abraham Lincoln was calling his listeners to have charity for were at that moment fighting on the other side in a bloody war. Secondly, in that wonderful phrase, with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, Lincoln encouraged his listeners to do the right thing, but recognised that doing the right thing not only involves a process of heart-searching enquiry, but that our ability to see the right is a God-given gift and not the proceeds of our own righteousness or faith. The attempt to do the right has to be undertaken with humility and the recognition of our own fallibility and frequently wilful blindness. He calls his listeners to be firm in the right, but to recognise our view of the right to be provisional and fallible. 3

4 May God bless you with knowledge of the right, and strength to follow it without malice, but with humility and compassion for all. Fr Geoff THANK YOU Falling down a step on the landing and breaking the top of my femur is not the most sensible thing I have done in my life, especially as I ended up having to have an operation mending my hip in Watford General Hospital. The hospital did an excellent job and looked after me; since coming home the district nurses and physiotherapists have taken over. Now I have to be patient and let my limb strengthen up, do my exercises and gradually build up the amount of walking I can do in one go. It is not all gloom and doom. My living room is a mass of lovely get well cards; there are flowers in the house and there have been many telephone calls of good wishes. Thank you to everyone for all these lovely tokens which have cheered me up and continue to do so. 5 St Michael and All Angels Appeal for photos, letters and newspaper cuttings for centenary display While going through some papers in the vicar s vestry with Fr Geoff recently (in my new role as church warden), we came across a number of old letters and photographs of people connected with St Michael s down through the ages. We thought it would be lovely to share these with everyone, and it occurred to us that they could form part of a larger display about our church, the building and its people, to mark our centenary. So, we are planning to put together a display of photos/letters/newspaper cuttings from the last 100 years since the church was built. Please have a look through your archives, cupboards, drawers, and bring your items along to me or Fr Geoff as soon as possible. If you are worried about displaying originals, you could arrange for us to have a copy, or we could do a copy for you. Do please take note of the following: Photo(s) must be specific to St Michael s, of people with a connection to our church, and preferably taken in or around the church. All items need to be clearly labelled with your name and contact details (so we can return them!), and indicating what year the picture was taken, and also who is in the photo. Copies are preferable, as we need to be able to stick pins in them or glue them in place etc. We are happy to arrange for copies to be made if need be. Copies can be given to Fr Geoff or me in person, or you could them to the church address: stmichaels@talktalk.net and we will then print them. Please rest assured that due care and attention will be given to safeguarding and data protection. As we may well be flush with contributions from the last years (for obvious reasons), we cannot guarantee that every single item will be displayed but we ll do our best! 6 17TH WATFORD BROWNIES Hannah has now made her Promise and so is a full member of the Pack. We have now completed the Girls in Action project Choices for Girls. There was a good range of activities to help our Brownies learn about the way girls in some different countries live and the lack of choices that they have. The evaluation activity at the end showed that they feel they have learned a lot and enjoyed the challenge, especially some of the games. Sadly, the District Brownie Adventure evening at Lees Wood had to be cancelled on the night because of the heavy rain. We are now getting ready for Pack Holiday, which Bristi is running this year. The theme is Dr Seuss and at our joint meeting at Trinity last week the girls were doing pictures ready for use on charts, while the parents had their meeting about the holiday. Our next activity is the Marathon Challenge, which is a sponsored event to raise money for children with cancer. The challenge has to be centred around the number 26 and this time we are asking each Six to make a collage using 26 different recycled materials. 7 MERCY SHIPS - what on earth are they? They are in fact ships which bring healing and hope to many. It is an International Christian Charity that provides free surgical and medical care on board its ships. It began in 1978 with the purchase of retired ocean liners, and since that date a variety of Mercy Ships have worked in more than 150 ports in developing nations. They change lives by operations such as repairing cleft palates and lips, cataract operations, facial reconstruction where there are gross deformities, orthopaedic operations and reconstruction after such injuries as burns. All this work is done by trained and selected surgeons and staff who are all volunteers. They also link up with off-ship teams to improve community care in many ways. These include clean water, agriculture, HIV / Aids intervention and much else. Please look on the Notice Board in the South Aisle for more details of this work. And whilst you are there PLEASE look at the information shown on the other boards. This information shows the work and scope of the other charities which we, as a church, support. Our Mission Committee discuss very carefully each year how much of our various funds go to which of the charities. They are all doing wonderful and essential work in different ways - some at home and some abroad.. We do need your support and your interest. 8 MARRIAGE AND SAME SEX PARTNERSHIPS In Estuary English sime sex marriage - can't get me 'ead rarnd 'at one. There was I finkin' that marriage only 'appens between a man and a woman. Ah well, there yer go. There we go indeed. Both Houses of Parliament have accepted the concept of same sex marriage, and by big majorities in both cases. As legislators, Anglican bishops in the House of Lords have accepted the will of Parliament. The next stage for both Houses to deal with the nitty- gritty and sort out the nuts and bolts of the intended Act. The intention it seems is to empower ministers of religion to conduct or choose not to conduct same sex weddings. We know already that no choice will be given to civil registrars. The Government intends to exclude from the proposed legislation the Church of England and hitherto the Church in Wales - hitherto because the Archbishop of Wales Dr Barry Morgan drew attention to the fact the Church in Wales is disestablished and therefore free to determine its own spiritual and ecclesiastical policies. 'The Government succeeded in drawing his ire because I presume a) the Government's giving none of the Churches any advance warning, and b) ignorance about the fact of disestablishment and its implications. At this point, a little surrealism if I may - a phone cali between Dr Morgan and Maria Miller, the Secretary of State for Culture etc. Dr Morgan puts on a Michael Caine impression and says "Maria, do you know.. the Church in Wales is disestablished?..no?.. not a lot of people know that". Maria suffers an embarrassing oops! Moment (you know the advert) and says "oops! my heart went boom.." This is followed by civil servants running round in circles, papers flying everywhere. The Permanent Secretary has to break it to her gently.. "The Archbishop is right. The Church in Wales was disestablished by Act of Parliament in the 1920's. In reply to your question about Parliamentary Sovereignty and possible re-imposition of Establishment on the Church in Wales, it is possible but would be a touchy topic. My earnest, honest and bumble advice would be based on that in vogue vernacular negative imperative - don't go there". Lo, it came to pass that they went not there. This all emits a collective Governmental "oops!" and thoughts of "How do you solve a problem like Maria?" (Rodgers and Hammerstein). To be fair, Maria is not the problem, and I wonder if she knew the subject would be in her brief when recently she became Secretary of State. As to same sex marriage, I am trying, and failing, to understand why the issue became so urgent at present, other than expediency and political opportunism. Whereas there was no pressure from the gay community before, there certainly is now. The genie has been released and will not want to go back into its bottle. The Government has flung open Pandora s Box only to find it contains cans of worms, the first being the Welsh Church issue already mentioned. Now that the principle has been established, I hope the Government will learn the lesson of Dr Morgan and take itself back from the precipice of clumsily going to war with the churches (who have voters in their congregations). It cannot surely by-pass the Churches and authorise their priests and ministers to go ahead unilaterally. It would leave them vulnerable to litigation or to internal disciplinary meaures. The Churches need a great deal of time to deliberate and sort out their own policy. Friends of mine in London Welsh places tell me that so far there has been no discussion locally in 8

9 their chapels, but expect to be consulted in due course by their respective headquarters in Wales after dedicated committees have deliberated. It seems the Government can go ahead and legalise civil wedding ceremonies if it chooses. What it does then boil down to is how much they wish to confront the Churches, On the civil side, one wonders what extra civil wedding ceremony would give that is not already available under a civil partnership. As for the Churches, they will need time for reflection though no doubt there will be strident voices seeking to compel the Churches one way or the other to comply forthwith. Whether the exclusion of the Church of England can survive detailed Parliamentary scrutiny remains to be seen. Some MPs are bound to query why the Church of England should be treated differently. I suspect the reason lies in the knotty problem of Establishment and a desire not to put Her Majesty into an invidious position as Head of the Church of England. The last thing 1 would wish to see is the application of a guillotine motion to push legislation through. The question for Churches will be whether to give their blessing as a body to solemnisation of same sex unions, or at least, a blessing after a civil ceremony, or whether to leave it to their clergy to decide without let or hindrance. A move to the latter would imply consent. We all need to think through privately and as a body what attitude we should take, particularly if two of our own congregation want a same sex marriage. We could take a nuffink to do wiv us, guv approach but in time the Church of England will no doubt be pressed to get into line. In the meantime, if two of our congregation wish to register a civil partnership (the only course open to people of the same sex at the moment), may I wish them well, whether or not the Church ultimately blesses same sex unions formally as marriage. If the Churches finish up saying no, clergy will have to judge how far they can go in their opposition, and apply great tact and diplomacy in their ministry towards gay members of their congregations male and female. For now, I need to think through what my own attitude should be from a religious standpoint. I start from the point of being a heterosexual male probably with prejudices arising therefrom, but I need to rise above that consideration and be as objective as possible. It means reviewing a) all I know about the nature of homosexuality male and female. b) what the Bible says in fact about homosexuality male and female and how it is to be interpreted. c) question about the sanctity or otherwise of marriage over and above legal rights and responsibilities. Above all, I need to make a sincere effort to establish the actual will of the Almighty, through prayer, religious and secular study (God is God of the secular world as well as the ecclesiastical) and try to understand Divine will in the underlying and overriding significance of events. 13 CYCLING THE KENNET AND AVON CANAL FROM BRISTOL TO READING During the weekend of 13 th and 14 th July we intend to cycle along the towpath of the Kennet and Avon Canal from its junction with the River Avon in Bristol to Reading where it joins the River Thames. The distance along the canal is 87.5 miles. All proceeds will go to Hollie and Lizzie s quest to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania in August The climb will raise money for the CJD Support Network. Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (or sometimes known as Jakob-Creutzfeldt Disease) is one of a group of rare brain disorders known as prion diseases which occur both in humans and certain animals. The infectious agent, or prion, attacks the brain, killing cells. Gaps in brain tissue develop, giving the brain a characteristic sponge-like appearance under the microscope. Prions may exist in the body for many years before symptoms begin, but death may then result within a year. CJD usually attacks people over the age of 55. Early symptoms of CJD include minor lapses of memory, mood changes and loss of interest. Within weeks an infected person may complain of clumsiness and feeling muddled, become unsteady in walking and may exhibit slow or slurred speech. Eyesight often becomes blurred. The disease progresses to jerky movements, shakiness and stiffness of limbs, incontinence and the loss of the ability to move or speak. It is likely that the person is no longer aware of their surroundings or disabilities. Eventually the person will need full nursing care. People affected by CJD usually die within six months of early symptoms, often from pneumonia. In a minority of patients the disease may take two years to run its course. In rare cases, the disease can last for many years. (Taken From THE CJD SUPPORT NETWORK WEBSITE) WHY ARE WE TRYING TO RAISE MONEY FOR THIS CAUSE? When we lived in Australia (back in 2002/3), our daughter Elizabeth went to the local primary school in Blayney, New South Wales. One of her friends from that school (now 19 years old) developed CJD in As you can see from the above her future is not good. Elizabeth and a friend are going to climb Mt Kilimanjaro this coming August to raise money for the CJD Support Network charity. This cycle ride from Bristol to Reading along the Kennet and Avon is part of our contribution to raise money for this cause. 15 We ll continue to pray for those in countries where they are persecuted for their faith. Open Doors Handbook of Prayer - Where Faith Costs The Most: July 1st - 6th: Pakistan. In this mainly Islamic country a Christian can be charged with blasphemy under their law and extremists continue to incite hatred towards Christians and many underage Christian girls are being sexually assaulted by Muslim men. Pray for Asia Bibi, a Christian mother, sentenced to death for blasphemy and that the law will allow Christians the freedom to run established churches. Give thanks that the Christian population is growing and a steady trickle of Muslims are joining the churches. July 7th - 13th: Ethiopia. For years the Ethiopian Orthodox Church has persecuted believers who leave their ranks but the main source of persecution has now become Islamic extremists. A new law banning all religious messages and talks from public places is expected to bring a wave of restrictions against Christians. Pray for secret believers that the Lord would protect them from violence within their own families, and for Christian women as violence towards them often goes unreported. Give thanks that Open Doors have been able to supply bibles and training as well as bicycles for the pastors. July 14th - 20th: Uzbekistan. The regime will do anything to stay in power, so no religious activities outside state controlled institutions are allowed. Evangelical Christianity is seen as a destabilising element that must be eradicated. Churches live in fear of raids, confiscation of literature and heavy fines, which are frequent and increasing. Church members face harassment, detention and arrest for holding private prayer meetings or possessing illegal literature. Pray that God will strengthen and encourage Christians under pressure on many fronts. That larger Christian groups will find ways to gather for worship or training and for Tohar Haydarov, in prison for 10yrs on trumped up charges. July 21st - 28th: Libya. Opposition comes mainly from family, the community and fanatical armed groups. It is forbidden to import Arabic scriptures or to evangelise. There is no central government and the rule of law is absent so extremist movements are able to perpetrate violence on believers. An estimated 75% of expat Christians have left the country. Pray for strength for secret believers, they are forbidden to meet together. For a stable government that will rule wisely and with justice. Thank God for the Christian programmes on TV, radio and the internet which are generating a growing interest in Christianity. 15

16 Syria: Continue to pray for all caught up in the war in Syria. Around a million people have fled from their homes to find refuge in neighbouring countries, others are homeless, widowed or orphans. Pray for the Christians who have stayed that they will find the strength and courage in God to continue meeting together and spreading the gospel. Pray also that the Lord would bring comfort especially to children who find themselves with no home or family and that there would be peace. On the home front pray for... Those who have taken their exams and are waiting to hear their results to find out if they will get their places in chosen schools, colleges or universities. Those who have completed their education and now have the task of finding employment. All in governmental leadership: International, national, local. Pray for them, as Solomon prayed for himself, for God s wisdom in the decisions they make on a daily basis. That the Lord would put in prominent positions those who will speak for Him and His ways. All of our church leaders, their spouses and families. Pray for them that the Lord will strengthen them and enable them to carry out the work each day that He has for them. The children and young people to hear the gospel and respond positively, especially those in their teens and twenties who are in very short supply in our churches. Those from our churches who are out on the mission field, away from home and their families, that they would know the Lord s love and comfort. If it s true we are here to help others, then what are the others here for? If a pig loses its voice does it become disgruntled? If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, then doesn t it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models deposed, tree surgeons debarked and dry cleaners depressed?
