Brodhead United Methodist Church Open hearts~open minds~open doors st Center Ave., Brodhead, WI brodheadumc@gmail.com Church Office Hours Monday-Wednesday 9am-12pm, 1pm-3pm Thursday 9am-12pm To contact Pastor Krystal: February 2015 When you read this newsletter, it will be February. This is the month of looooove. I will have 2 sermons on the subject (using the movies UP and Frozen). You, or probably your children, will write and send Valentine s Day cards to their friends. It is a holiday of flowers, red, and candy. Now I will admit something to you, I don t like Valentine s Day! I never have. Part of it is because I am not a fan of chocolate. The other part is because growing up I never had a boyfriend and so I felt left out, lonely, and maybe even a little depressed around the holiday. Anyone else out there ever felt that way? Even now, as the holiday approaches, I groan a little. (This makes my husband happy because he can ignore the holiday too.) As a younger girl, I had those Cinderella dreams. That my prince would come and sweep me off my feet. I would get a huge bouquet of roses, a wonderful meal, and we would go dancing. But when that didn t happen, I think I became pragmatic and maybe a little bitter. Where was MY Prince Charming? Why isn t someone on my doorstep proclaiming his love? If you have ever felt this way, you are not alone. But we are both wrong. For someone is on our doorstep proclaiming his love for us. In fact, he proclaimed it in one of the most beautiful expression of love ever recorded in history, found in the gospel of John: For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever should believe in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16) Yes, God s message of love is breathed into every word contained within the Holy Scriptures. For God Himself is LOVE! (John 4:16). His love is unconditional and all encompassing. He longs to embrace us and hold us close to His heart as He softly whispers Be Mine. Would you like to receive a very special Valentine this year? The truth is, it has already been sent to you. It arrived Special Delivery two thousand years ago by way of God s only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. Will you receive Him today? He longs to bring his message of love to you and transform all your days into Valentine s Day! Pastor Krystal Goodger
The Purpose of United Methodist Women The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is: To know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ. To develop a creative supportive fellowship. To expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. UMW - Reaching out to Welcome All Did you know? The United Methodist Women membership is open to any woman who indicates her desire to belong to and participate in the outreach mission of the church through this organization. Did you know? The money we raise goes to help the missions throughout the world. Did you know? We contact a missionary, who is having a birthday, each month, and wish them a happy birthday. Sometimes we hear back from them as to what they are doing in the mission field. Did you know that we meet the 4 th Thursday of each month to learn about missions, and have food, and fellowship? This month Betty Earleywine is going to present a "History of Our Church". We will start with a brunch at 9:30 a.m. We are looking forward to meeting new people with new ideas to help us reach our pledge to missions. Bring a dish to pass. See you in the church basement February 28 th. Come join us. The Joy of the Lord is Our Strength JOY, the second fruit of the spirit, will be our theme for February as Mustard Seed examines Week Four of Living Beyond Ourselves. Diane Rabe will guide us as discover five key sources of joy as found in Scripture. Love melts the heart of stone joy touches the deepest part of that heart. Our study begins on page 73 and concludes with video notes on page 93. We will meet in room 23 on Saturday, February 14 th at 9:00 a.m. See you there! Sewing Circle The Sewing Circle or Quilt Club as some suggest we call it, will meet again in February on the 2nd Tuesday, the 10 th, at 9:00 a.m. We welcome anyone that can come to help us. It is easy to do what we do, and we can even thread your needle for you. Come and join us on a worthwhile project.
Dental Care; Why is it Important? Dental care is important from birth to death. Dental issues can cause pain at any age and, specifically, tooth decay can cause problems with overall health, speech, and growth. The bacteria from gum disease can travel to other parts of the body and set up infections. Like many other chronic diseases, tooth decay is preventable and reversible in early stages. Many people think that babies don t have teeth so what should we care about their mouths? Simply wiping the baby s mouth out after feedings will help remove bacteria and the media (milk) in which it can grow. Tooth decay in children younger than six years is the most common chronic disease for that age group. During this time in life it is important to establish habits such as brushing at least twice daily and seeing a dentist twice per year. There has been a lot of press about getting enough fluoride. Many people have private wells and get no fluoride. A pea-sized amount of toothpaste is recommended to provide enough fluoride per day. This pea-size amount of toothpaste contains a quarter milligram of fluoride. Conversely, too much fluoride can cause dental fluorosis which creates little white or brown spots on the teeth. Too much fluoride can lead to decreased IQ. After the age of eight years fluoride is not beneficial because the teeth are done growing. Mother s breast milk does not contain fluoride, so babies should receive fluoride when their teeth come in. This is when the brushing habit should be established and that pea-sized amount of past will provide the needed fluoride. There is also a difference between naturally occurring fluoride and the artificial fluoride that is put in the water supply. Some dentists recommend water picks over flossing. The thinking is that floss moves bacteria around in the mouth rather than removing it like a water pick would. Water pick prices range from $ so may pose a hardship for some people. Early stages of gum disease can be reversible. These facts are why it is important to make sure people are scheduling regular dental visits which help catch early signs of gum disease and give the opportunity to reverse it. Did you know that problems in your mouth can lead to problems in the rest of your body? Poor oral health can lead to high amount of bacteria which can lead to oral infections such as tooth decay and gum disease. There three simple things we can do to help improve our oral health. Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Floss at least once a day. Visit the dentist for cleaning every 6 months. Oral health may affect or contribute to disease such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis. One small step we can take to help maintain a healthy life style is having good oral care. And remember, even the smallest smile can brighten a dark day! Vicki Evenson, Parish Nurse

KEY USE POLICY A Key Use Policy was recently written by the Trustees and approved by the Church Council. The purpose of this policy is to assure that the Church building and equipment (facilities) of the Brodhead United Methodist Church shall be adequately secured at all times. All persons with the exception of the Church staff are required to complete a Key request form. Request forms are available at the Church office during regular business hours. Once this form is turned into the Church office, the request will be reviewed and key will be issued if approved. This policy will go into effect by mid February. An announcement will be made during the Sunday service prior to the implementation. A new lock will be installed in the North Entrance Door. The lock replacement is necessary due to years of wear. Keys will not be available prior to this. Jane Copus, Trustee Chairman To my church family, Again I thank you for your prayers on my behalf. Thank you also for your remembrances from time to time. I m slowly gaining some strength, but still have quite a way to go. Thank you so much. My church and church family mean so much to me. GOD IS GOOD! In Christian Love, Dorothy Shimko ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Jean Prestbroten would like to thank everyone for all of the prayers and concerns that she has received. Her leukemia is now in "stable" condition, thank God. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Many thanks to everyone that helped put up and take down the nativity at Veteran s Park, as well as those involved in the decorating of our church for the Christmas season.

Articles for the March newsletter are due to the office no later than Sunday, February 15th. Thank you. Thank You Lord Lord, I thank you today that when I need to hide, You are my hiding place. So often the storms of life come, forcing me to seek a place of refuge and comfort. Fierce battles are often fought inside me, making it necessary for me to retreat to a place of retreat, protection, and safety. At times this dog-eat-dog world of materialistic competition crowds me near the brink of physical and emotional chaos. I thank You, Lord, that You are a hiding place in which I may shut out my problems, my fears, my loneliness, my distress, my temptations, my material world. Then I can rest securely in that place of refuge which is in You sheltered and covered, protected and sheltered, yes protected and loved. I am not ashamed to hide, Lord. There are times when not to hide would be foolish. And I m not too proud to hide at times; for I would be the first to admit that life is sometimes too big for me to face alone, unaided. I would that all would find in You a hiding place; for no other place can offer the refreshing that comes from You. Only after drinking at Your fountain am I ready to go back into that alien world and face life unafraid and with courage. Thank You for always being there, Lord! The Psalmist had a secret place where he lived under the shadow of Your wing. So I (we) too can abide in peace and quietness and safety and protection in You, our hiding place. Thank You Lord! - -ds
