This exhibit is scheduled to run for approximately 2 months. To ensure a cohesive gallery experience, all artwork and artist statements must somehow relate to the subject of being used of God for the sake of others. What if my artwork doesn t fit this theme?...don t force a meaning on your art. If it doesn t fit, just wait for a different VineArts exhibit. The Bible says that even children and babies convey praises to God (Psalm 8:2). If you love art and want to try to make art for the glory of God, we re here to tell you that it s natural and we encourage you to participate in this exhibit. You have everything you need, whether you have formal training or not. You were born fully equipped to do this! Gina Deeming, VineArts Workshop Coordinator Expect revelation, and do not fear it. The artist must open himself to revelation, and that is an act of trust. With God, all things are possible. We are not supposed to be limited and trapped. As a child it did not seem strange to me that Jesus was able to talk face to face with Moses and Elijah, the centuries between them making no difference. The whole story of Jesus is confounding to the literal-minded. It might be a good idea if we practiced believing six impossible things every morning before breakfast [instead of trying] to domesticate God or make his mighty actions comprehensible to our finite minds. Madeleine L Engle in her book Walking on Water Some Thoughts on Doin the Stuff God has called us to serve. To be the hands and feet of Jesus. To go love people. It s what He did and it s what He instructed us to do. It s living life to the fullest. It s an upside-down world, this life with Jesus. Sometimes we hesitate, but when we step out, we re reminded of how easy it is to love. When we give, we re overjoyed with the life that is created by our touch that love could penetrate someone s heart through a hug or a smile. It s the simple way. It s the way of the Master. Tempe McFarlane in a Haiti team update for Vineyard Boise I would rather pray for 1,000 people, even if only one gets healed, than not to pray for any and none gets healed. John Wimber We are called to be naturally supernatural. We re called to not apologize for the miracles that happen. And we re called to not be spooky-freaky about it either. Pastor Trevor Estes, Vineyard Boise
2 Thoughts on DOIN THE STUFF We just want to serve and go love people in the direction and example that Jesus gave us. Whatever your passion is, you can direct that to helping others. That s where the fulfillment is. Tempe McFarlane in a Haiti team update for Vineyard Boise Mother Teresa was always of a mind that people think too much about doing things instead of just rolling up their sleeves and doing them. She would often say things that remind me of why benevolence is so important, why we should help those in need. God is the one who does the works; he just lets us tag along and help sometimes! Kathy Nelson, VineArts Leader Do not think that love, in order to be genuine, has to be extraordinary. What we need is to love without getting tired. Mother Teresa Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing. Mother Teresa I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God who is sending a love letter to the world. Mother Teresa For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead. James 2:26 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. Colossians 3:23-24 There is no better way to thank God for your sight than by giving a helping hand to someone in the dark. Helen Keller But wanting to justify himself, the man asked Jesus, Who is my neighbor? The question leading to the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:29) Where does the Expression Doin the Stuff Come From? John Wimber, founder of the Vineyard Movement, told a story from back when he was a new believer. He was visiting a church immediately after spending considerable time reading the gospel accounts of Jesus life and ministry. Following the service, John approached the pastor and asked him: So, when do we do the stuff? The stuff, said the pastor. What s the stuff? You know, John replied, the stuff in the Bible, like healing the sick and casting out demons. The stuff! Oh, replied the pastor. We don t do the stuff. We believe they did it back in biblical days, but we don t do it today. With a rather confused look on his face, John could only say: And I gave up drugs for this? We, the Church, exist for the sake of the world. Not for ourselves. Pray this prayer: God, break my heart for the world. Then go to the hurt and allow yourself to feel the pain, until God puts something on your heart to do. Craig Groeschel, Pastor of LifeChurch.TV In a vision the Lord showed me a magnificent mountain lake. The water of the lake spilled over and came down into a large plain, where there were people working in the fields, digging irrigation ditches... The Lord said, The cascading stream is the Church, and the irrigation ditches are ministry to the poor, weak, sick, broken, and lost... The blessing can either stay in the church, with great meetings that eventually end. Or we can pull the gates up and let the water begin flowing. John Wimber Jesus was sought after. People wanted things from him. But sometimes he pulled away from the crowds to just be with his Father, alone in prayer. And strengthened by his Father, he returned to the crowds and actively took compassion on them. Andrea Estes, School of Biblical Action Being Spirit-empowered includes signs and wonders and spiritual gifts, and that s part of it. But actually this is about asking God to empower you for a life of service in every way. This isn t about you being known as a healer. This isn t about you. The believers in the New Testament were filled and re-filled every day with the Spirit for the sake of others. This is about saying, Lord, use me however you want to use me; I d love to see this person healed, so I m praying in faith that you would use me as a conduit of your healing power. And God not only heals broken hearts, but literally restores sight to the blind. When you ask for the Holy Spirit to empower you in Jesus name, you ll experience the Holy Spirit moving through you to love others, even in line at the bank. Tri Robinson, Pastor of Vineyard Boise In a nutshell here is my take on Spirit-filled ministry: Doing the stuff: Yes, yes, yes! Manufacturing the stuff: No, no, no! Greg Prosch, Marriage Ministry, Vineyard Boise Let us touch the dying, the poor, the lonely and the unwanted according to the graces we have received, and let us not be ashamed or slow to do the humble work. Mother Teresa Our prayer ministry is called God showing up. Kevin Thienes, Prayer Ministry, Vineyard Boise
3 Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. The Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves... Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these because I am going to the Father. If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. The Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you... You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses. Jesus (John 14:9,11,12,16,25 and Acts 1:8) Jesus told his disciples to obey everything he commanded them, and there are seven direct commands of Jesus to his disciples: Love God, love one another, heal the sick, cleanse lepers, cast out demons, raise the dead, and preach the Good News. Kevin Thienes, Prayer Ministry, Vineyard Boise When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the King will say to those on his right, Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. Then the righteous will answer him, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you? The King will reply, I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me. Jesus (Matt. 25:31-39) The Spirit of God, the Master, is on me because God anointed me. He sent me to preach good news to the poor, heal the heartbroken, Announce freedom to all captives, pardon all prisoners. God sent me to announce the year of his grace a celebration of God s destruction of our enemies and to comfort all who mourn, To care for the needs of all who mourn in Zion, Give them bouquets of roses instead of ashes, Messages of joy instead of news of doom, A praising heart instead of a languid spirit. (Isaiah 61, The Message) Recently I led some art activities at a retreat for abused women. I knew it would be extraordinarily hard because I would have to face my own past, but I followed the Lord s will in bringing these women some healing through the insight He gave me. I was blessed beyond measure; the impact of the words and art God gave me far outreached my meager expectations and ministered to the women more than I ever thought possible. These women had never painted before, yet they freely painted as they wept, prayed, bonded and worshiped. I watched as the Lord gave individuals profound messages that can t be explained as coincidence. Afterwards the women told me, Your art project brought us together as one body of sisters ; This experience will forever minister to my heart ; Being able to connect on this level to my Savior was a very special moment for me in my journey of faith. Doin the stuff is what life is all about. All I want is to hold the hand of God and follow where He takes me. To able to live hand in hand with our Father in a very real way is I can t even explain it somehow not of this world. Sherri Coffield, VineArts leader
