1 NOVEMBER 2017 November is going to be a busy month in the parish, with significant remembrances and opportunities for thanksgiving on each of the Sundays, not to mention the anticipated completion of our building extensions! The first Sunday in November is set aside to reflect upon and remember with gratitude the lives of the saints, both those who are known and unknown, who have attained sainthood by virtue of their Christian witness and discipleship. All Saints Day proper falls on 1 st November, and is commemorated in our parish on the closest Sunday to which it falls. The second Sunday in November being the closest Sunday to Remembrance Day is an opportunity to give thanks to God for the lives of all those lost in the pursuit of peace, and to pray for God s blessing on all those currently serving in the Defence Force. We ll layer this at St Anselm s with our final Mission Focus Sunday for 2017 as we welcome the chaplain of St Bartholomew s House to be our preacher. The third Sunday in November is more personal. We get to farewell two of our beloved members Cecil and Elizabeth - as they relocate south of the river to live with their daughter and son-in-law beginning a new chapter in their retirement. Along with Bishop Kate Wilmot, we will thank God for their presence and ministry in this place since its inception, and pray for God s blessing to be upon them as they continue their life s journey. The fourth Sunday of November is the final Sunday of this liturgical year. We crown the year by commemorating the Reign of Christ as we offer our lives anew to the service of Christ our King, and pray for the hastening of God s Kingdom on earth. It s all rich, exciting and full of great delight. You don t want to miss a thing! Every blessing, Gill 1 N o v e m b e r L i n k U p

5 MISSION and OUTREACH Facilitator: Kate Castledine 2017 CHRISTMAS GIVING AT ST ANSELM S November sees the beginning of our Christmas giving program at St Anselm s. Christmas is a particularly hard time for those experiencing financial stress or family dysfunction for a variety of reasons. This year we again have four ways you can participate to alleviate some of their stress letting them know people care: Anglicare Christmas appeal; St Barts Christmas Hamper appeal; Ascension Anglican Church Midland emergency relief program; and Angel tree prison fellowship program. You will find details how you can donate on the separate sheet attached. Why not place it on the fridge or have it somewhere handy taking it with you when you go shopping. Thanks for your support helping those struggling this Christmas. If you have any queries about the Christmas giving program please see Kate Castledine or phone her on EMERGENCY RELIEF FOOD DONATIONS FOR NOVEMBER 05 November Small jars of peanut / vegemite / jam & packaged long life cheese 12 November Tinned baked beans, spaghetti or meat; instant noodles 19 November Cereals (smaller boxes); long life milk; fruit juice; soft drink 26 November Dry pasta; pasta sauce; tinned tuna A note from the Ascension Emergency Relief Program: We are desperately short of plastic bags for packing the groceries. We use up to 200 per week so would like to request that your wonderful parishioners might save their plastic bags from the supermarket and send to us along with other donations. 5 N o v e m b e r L i n k U p

6 A NOTE FROM BRUCE The annual Kingsley Community Carols Festival is on again. It is being held on Sunday 10 th December commencing at 7:15pm. This carols evening is a joint venture organised in conjunction with the Kingsley Church of Christ and the Woodvale Secondary College. This is a significant mission outreach event where we can take the gospel message to people in our community. In order for the event to be a success we do need some helpers to assist before, during and after the event. Jobs such as unloading the sound and lighting truck, unloading the musical equipment, setting up the firework boundary, taking a rostered turn in security and clean up and packing up at the end. To set up the firework boundary we need someone who has a trailer with a ute or four wheel drive vehicle. This person would need to be available at 3:30 pm. If you are able to help please contact Bruce or Mandy Herriman. 6 N o v e m b e r L i n k U p

8 FIRST THIRD MINISTRY Facilitator: Mandy Herriman Dear Children of the Parish, This season in our parish life is what we call Ordinary time. This is a time in the church where we learn and grow to become more faithful followers of Christ. This is the time when we take a breath and discover things we didn t know about God or about ourselves. Just as we learn and remember new information at school helping us understand more difficult concepts, so we learn and remember new information in church that helps us understand Christmas and Easter in new and exciting ways. It seems there is often something special happening at church Easter, Lent, Advent, Christmas, Patronal Festivals, Saints Days, Pentecost, Epiphany so many wonderful and meaningful celebrations. Now is the time to enter into the rhythm of Ordinary time, reflecting and absorbing all the wonderful things we have heard and experienced. This is growing up a little time. As our bodies grow, our minds expand. For our body to grow, we need food and water, clothes to wear, a safe shelter to live in and we need to be loved. For our minds to grow, we need people to teach us, books to read, adventures to have and things to see. Our souls are no different. For our souls to grow we need spiritual food feeding us. We need a place where we can feel safe, where we know we are loved. We need people teaching us, books to read, adventures to have and things to see so our souls as well as our bodies and minds can grow to be healthy. This is why we come to church on a Sunday so we can feed and nourish our souls to grow and learn about God more and more. There is a calendar for you to use during this growing month of November. You can print it off filling it in during the month. 8 N o v e m b e r L i n k U p
