Prelude Gathering Welcome & Announcements Brenda Stone, Liturgist (All are invited to sign in the Friendship Register) Let us prepare our hearts and minds to worship God Chimes Call to Worship: One: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for Christ has known our weakness, and still God s steadfast love endures forever. All: Let the Redeemed of our Lord say so, all those he redeemed from trouble. One: We cried to the One who is fully God and fully man, in our trouble our God saves us from distress and gives us peace. All: God sent His Son, the living Word, who has healed us and delivered us from sure destruction. One: Let us thank our Redeemer for divine love that is unchanging, who has given us this assurance forever. All: And let us rejoice loudly with sacrifices of thanksgiving, telling of the mighty deeds of our Savior with songs of joy. *Opening Hymn 744 Arise, Your Light Is Come! Call to Confession One: This is the truth: That the Light has come into the world, we are the Children of Light, being identified as such by our love for each other, let us then confess our weakness in corrupted flesh to Him who bore flesh yet committed no sin. Prayer of Confession All: Merciful God, we confess that Christ came in perfection as fully human, with no faults. We confess that Christ is our example in how we should live but have failed in following that which has been taught us. We all are weak but leaning upon your grace we become strong. We thank you for your kindness toward our feeble attempts and accept your forgiveness with gladness of heart. Praise you for these gifts, giver of life. Declaration of Forgiveness One: Indeed, God did not send the Christ into the world to condemn the world but so that those who hear and believe might be saved through him. 4 *Statement of Faith (in unison) Apostles Creed (Traditional) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. 9 Communion Blessing of the Bread and Wine. One: Open our eyes, Lord Jesus, to see you in this communion, that we see you in this common bread and in our common lives. Let us see you in our hunger and our fullness, in our joy and in our brokenness. All: We take this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Spirit we who eat and drink them may know a closer experience of your presence. Servers please take your places One: All: One: All: One: All: On the night before Jesus died, he shared food with his friends. He took bread, blessed and broke it, and giving it to them said, Take and eat, this is my body which is given for you and for many. Do this to remember me. He took wine, blessed it, and giving it to them said, Drink this all of you. This is my blood which is shed for you and for many; do this to remember me. To God be the glory forever. Amen. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The gifts of God for the people of God. Come and let us take this Holy Sacrament remembering that Jesus died for us, and believe in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving, that Christ died for us and rose again in eternal life. Servers distribute elements Communion Prayer One: Loving God, you have created all humanity in your image and likeness, and have revealed your plan and purpose in calling your friends and family. As we share this holy meal, inspire our hearts to see every man, woman and child given the dignity and value which is your purpose and your gift. All: O God, strengthen us in our desire to serve you and others, and breathe into our bodies the passion of your love. We pray this in the name of Jesus, from whom we have received the promise of the resurrection. 10 Announcements Please come to the church Saturday, January 14 at 9:00 a.m. for the unhanging of the greens. There will be pastries of some kind served along with coffee. Come volunteer and stay for free lunch at noon! The Congregational Care Committee would like to invite YOU to be a shepherd for Each shepherd is assigned 6-7 sheep (members of our church family). The following is an example of the things Shepherds are asked to do for their sheep. 1. Pray for each person every day. 2. Remember birthdays, anniversaries, and other special days with a card or phone call. 3. Make a special effort to greet them at church on Sunday. 4. If they miss church several Sundays in a row, check in with them to be sure they re okay and to determine if they need anything. 5. Respond to concerns as you are able and communicate to the pastor and the Congregational Care Committee any concerns that need a broader response. 6. If one of your flock is homebound or in a nursing home, please try to visit 3-4 times during the year. Being a shepherd is more reward than work and we would like to see more of our members take advantage of this opportunity.
