14 TH WEEK AFTER PENTECOST~ LECTION 23 SERVICE OF THE WORD SEPTEMBER 10 TH AT 9:00 AM ~ SEPTEMBER 11 TH AT 6:45 PM WELCOME TO RALLY SUNDAY THE LORD JESUS CHRIST WELCOMES ALL to this house of worship! As Jesus welcomed the crowds to listen to him teach, so the Spirit of God welcomes us to listen to our Lord s teachings. May our gathering around God s Word of grace bless one and all alike! Today s Rally Day: God s Work-Our Hands activities immediately follow today s Sunday Worship. All are welcome! WORSHIP AIDS LARGE PRINT BULLETINS are available for those who need them from the ushers. ACTIVITY BAGS for young children are on a stand at the rear of church; please return after services. Thanks. THE NURSERY located upstairs by the balcony is not staffed during worship, however, it is available for your use. I WISH CARDS are in your pews; please let us know your ideas to improve our Trinity home. GATHERING WE PREPARE: Today, we welcome Drew Campbell from Mankato as our pulpit guest. He serves as a Blue Earth County Supervisor and a LSS volunteer with homeless youth. We also welcome Dawn, Drew s wife, who is also sharing their gracious musical talent with us. We are fortunate having them with us on this Rally Sunday as we lift up the important work of L.S.S. representing Our Hands doing God s Work in every county of Minnesota from assisting adoption and homeless care to refugee resettlement and financial counseling and more. We are thankful for the Campbell s joining us today and sharing God s Word of grace and the work of the church. Today s readings speak of our God who wills to seek and save the lost, not only as a holy hope, but as our only hope. Conflict and bad choices are part of our relationships and community life. Jesus words in today's gospel are often used in such situations. The prophet Ezekiel is told to be faithful in warning sinners to turn from their ways. Paul reminds us that only love can fulfill the law. Our gathering in the name of Christ, assures us that Jesus is present among us bearing the gifts of peace and reconciliation. Thanks be to God! PARISH NOTICES RINGING THE BELL CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Blessed be the Holy Trinity, + one God, the Sovereign over all the earth, the Wisdom from on high, our merciful Judge and Savior. Amen. Let us boldly approach the throne of grace, trusting in God's mercy and love. Generous and faithful God, Silence is kept for reflection 2

we confess to you all the ways, known and unknown, that we reject and undermine your steadfast love. Though you made us your people, we treat strangers with suspicion. Though you forgave our debts, we collect without mercy. Yet we are quick to pass judgment on others. Have mercy on us, O God, and remember your promise to us, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. Through the living Word, + Jesus Christ, God forgives your every debt, your every sin, and gives you a new heart and a new spirit. Amen. GATHERING SONG Earth and All Stars ELW #731, 1,2,4&5 GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. 3

PRAYER OF THE DAY O Lord God, enliven and preserve your church with your never ending mercy. For without your help, we mortals will fail; remove far from us everything that is harmful, and leads us toward all gives life and salvation, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. DAWN AND DREW CAMPBELL 5

WORD FIRST READING Ezekiel 33:7-11 So you, mortal, I have made a sentinel for the house of Israel; whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me. If I say to the wicked, "O wicked ones, you shall surely die," and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from their ways, the wicked shall die in their iniquity, but their blood I will require at your hand. But if you warn the wicked to turn from their ways, and they do not turn from their ways, the wicked shall die in their iniquity, but you will have saved your life. Now you, mortal, say to the house of Israel, Thus you have said: "Our transgressions and our sins weigh upon us, and we waste away because of them; how then can we live?" Say to them, As I live, says the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from their ways and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways; for why will you die, O house of Israel? The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SECOND READING Romans 13:8-14 Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, "You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet"; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, "Love your neighbor as yourself." Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law. Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us live honorably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION 6

GOSPEL Matthew 18:15-20 The Gospel is found in Matthew chapter 18, verses Jesus offers practical advice to his disciples on how individuals--and the church as a whole--should show wrongdoers their need for repentance. And now The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the 18 th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one. But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them." The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. MESSAGE Mr. Drew Campbell SONG OF THE DAY We Are Called ELW #720 7

ENROLLMENT AND BLESSING OF CONFIRMATION STUDENTS AND PARENTS Parent(s) of each student presents their child(ren) before the railing with the minister addressing them: P: Students, you have been received by our Lord Jesus Christ in Holy Baptism and are reborn children of God and inheritors of eternal life. By water and the Holy Spirit you were made members of the Church, the body of Christ. Living in Christ, you are now at the age this year to study the Holy Scriptures and the teachings of the Lutheran Church, and learn what it means to participate in the communion of saints. Today, we ask you for your commitment and re-commitment to devote yourself to this special commitment of time and effort. P: Parents, I ask you, will you support your daughters and sons in your prayers and by your example of living out your faith in Christ? Will you make WNW s, fellowship & service events, and attendance to worship a priority? We do and we ask God to help and guide us. Students, will you attend WNW s, fellowship & service events, worship, and complete assignments given to you as you are able? Students kneel at the railing with parent s laying on their hands: I will, and I ask God to help and guide me. P: Let us pray Most gracious God, we thank you for these young people who have received your love in the water and Word of holy baptism, and who, on their journey of faith have received promise in forgiveness in Word and Sacrament. And now, as they join and resume their participation in the church s ministry of Confirmation and make preparations to publicly affirm the faith of their baptism in Christ, we ask for your blessing to be upon each one. Guide and lead them with your Spirit. Place a hunger in their hearts for you. May the hands of these parents extended in blessing, give support, protection, and love to their children, so that they may eagerly learn, serve, and live life in your name the Name that is above every name who calls us his own, Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN. CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION (respond after Lord, in your mercy: Hear our prayer.) SHARING THE PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. THANKSGIVING OFFERING There is a Balm in Gilead Senior Choir 8

September 10 th, 2017 God calls us to show mercy and not judge others. DAILY BIBLE READINGS These readings are related to the Lectionary readings for this Sunday. We invite you to take time each day to read the assigned Bible passages. Sunday Matthew 18:21-35 A parable about forgiveness Monday Genesis 18:20-33 Abraham pleads for Sodom Tuesday Genesis 33:1-16 Jacob meets Esau Wednesday Genesis 45:1-15 Joseph forgives his brothers Thursday 1 Samuel 26:5-25 David spares Saul s life Friday Acts 6:8-15, 7:54-60 Stephen prays for his killers Saturday Psalm 79:8-11 Help us, O God our Savior Sunday Matthew 20:1-16 Parable of the vineyard workers SCRIPTURE VERSE FOR THIS WEEK So why do you judge your brothers or sisters in Christ? And why do you think you are better than they are? We will all stand before God to be judged. Romans 14:10 SAY, PRAY AND BLESS: A Prayer for the Week: Lord, help us not to judge others today. Help us to accept them and be kind to them. Amen. (Romans 14:1) Mealtime Prayer: Lord, as we eat the food you give, make us ready to forgive. We re so glad we have your love; thank you, Father, up above. Amen. A Blessing to Give: May the Lord forgive you all your sins, and help you to forgive others. Amen. CARING CONVERSATION Discuss in your household or small group: Have you ever felt judged by somebody? How did you feel? Why should we be careful about judging others? God is like the master in the Parable of the Unmerciful Servant (Matthew 18:21-35). What can we learn from this parable about judging others? DEVOTIONS Act out the Parable of the Unmerciful Servant (Matthew 18:21-35) or read it together with household members speaking as the different characters in the parable. Then, talk about each character. What are they like? Which of the characters are you most like? Take turns praying for each other, that God may help you to be kind and forgiving towards others. SERVICE Joseph was badly treated by his brothers, but God used what happened to bring about good (Genesis 50:20). Through his work as a leader in Egypt, God used Joseph to take care of many people in a time of great famine. Prepare a letter to send to an elected leader of your region or community. Thank them for their work on your behalf and let them know that you are praying for them. RITUALS AND TRADITIONS Jesus told Peter that he should forgive someone who sinned against him seventy times seven (Matthew 18:22). By this, he meant that we should never stop forgiving. Find a page or roll of small white stickers and write 70x7 on each. Stick these up around your home to remind you of Jesus call to practice forgiveness toward one another Vibrant Faith Ministries.
