Tutor Training Part 1 Barry Baker Exec. VP of City Gospel Mission John Parker Director, Whiz Kids Tutoring and Mentoring
Objectives: Understand Mission, Vision and Purpose of City Gospel Mission and Whiz Kids Tutoring and Mentoring Develop better understanding and implementation of the ENDS---Life Transformation Roadmap Strategies to establish effective relationships
History of CGM: Began in 1924 by James M. Gamble---Rest, safe, eat, loved Countless meals and volunteer hours, enormous amounts of prayer and many mergers later we now partner with over 450 churches in some form CGM is involved in 4 major causes---food and Shelter, Recovery, Job Readiness and Placement and Youth Development
10 years ago Whiz Kids was launched in Cincinnati. Once again by a passionate, called man of God---served 100 kids and partnered with 3 churches 2015 school year ended with students involved, volunteers, 90+ churches engaged and 70 different Whiz Kids sites from Dayton to Cynthiana All working with and through local churches
Mission Statement= What s wrong with the world and how you intend to fix it. Vision Statement= What the world will look like after you ve finished changing it.
CGM Mission Breaking the cycle of poverty and despair one life at a time. CGM Vision Jesus Christ transforming Greater Cincinnati through local churches.
Purpose of Whiz Kids Whiz Kids exists to engage, equip and empower churches to bring about life transformation in the lives of at-risk youth and their families across 4 areas: Physically, Mentally, Socially, Spiritually Break the Cycle and Make Disciples
How? By partnering with churches to help them establish and sustain effective ministry to reach youth and families in their community via the local school, in a method consistent with the churches available resources, the context of their community and the philosophy of their ministry.
What if Every child involved became proficient in reading and math Graduation rates soared Teen pregnancy was a thing of the past Kids could develop the ability AND love for reading and learning that lasted a lifetime
What if Parents without jobs found meaningful employment These relationships lasted thru middle and high school and beyond Each and every kid had someone else telling them I believe in you!
What if Families were welcomed into and embraced by the local church, became followers of Jesus, were discipled and generations changed as a result of your investment in this student The church was seen as an incredibly valuable asset to the community
What if Needs could be met in healthy, dignifying ways that lead to mutual growth and understanding Cross-cultural sensitivity increased to a rate where we embrace our distinctions and see them as beneficial and necessary to the community as a whole
What if These kids became influencers of positive change in their communities Trust, respect and intrinsic worth replaced judgement, assumption and distance in relationships
Bottom to Top Chris & Chris Deb & Faith Whiz Kids Tutoring and Mentoring Family done right Eyes opened Loving and serving This is HAPPENING!!
What are these items?
ENDS--- A Life Transformation Roadmap Helping us Go from Unaware to Aware to Intentional
Some common questions: Where did it come from? How has this proven to be useful? What is the purpose of this form/tool? What do we do when we become aware? How is this info used by CGM/WK? How often will we fill this out? How do we see the SC s and churches using this tool and the info it brings?
What do these characters have in common?
Poverty: The extent to which we lack resources. Many forms: Cultural Financial Material Spiritual Relational
4 ways out Goal or vision Talent or skill Pain too great Significant relationship
If relationships are a key to overcoming poverty What is necessary for a healthy relationship?
4 levels of relationship Intimate Personal Social Public What works well in one area, may not work in another.
4 ways to grow relationships Sharing Wondering Listening Kindness
Top 10 for at-risk youth ministry: 1. Don t ignore inappropriate behavior. 2. Let the children know you love them, even when they misbehave. Affirm the child, not the behavior 3. Don t take things personally. 4. Remember, relationships are built over time.
Top 10 for at-risk youth ministry: 5. Demonstrate correct English, good manners and courtesy. 6. Celebrate small victories 7. Kids are kids. 8. Be sensitive to and understand cultural distinctions.
Top 10 for at-risk youth ministry: 9. Children, (or adults for that matter) don t care how much you know until they know how much you care. 10.You can make a difference!
Big Ideas: We know what s involved in a healthy relationship We know how to be a friend Not about intelligence or ability
Big Ideas: Humility is necessary for learning This may be as beneficial to you as it is them THE KEY to all of this is the strength of relationships developed
Mentoring Details: Involved for 6 months Be a follower of Jesus Site needs appropriate leadership Volunteer Mentor Coach Meet with that coach for support, encouragement, prayer, etc. 1 year commitment, once a week over the course of the year Additional application, training and background check
Give 1 hour. Change 2 lives.
THE FIVE THINGS LIVING MISSIONALLY AFTER COLLEGE
THE FIVE THINGS LIVING MISSIONALLY AFTER COLLEGE Jesus talks about producing fruit that remains in John 15. Think about how you can really live bearing fruit that remains, as a spiritually fruitful person
