1 MCDONALD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH MARCH 2011 LENTEN SERVICES TO BEGIN FAMILY PROMISE You will find located on page 8 a listing of all the Lenten Services sponsored by the McDonald Ministerium. We ask that you please post this is in a convenient location so you know when and where each service will be located. Along with that, the Presbyterian Women will host their annual Ash Wednesday Service and Continental Breakfast on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 in the fellowship hall of Trinity Center. The imposition of ashes and the serving of communion will be offered. We hope you will bring a friend! Beginning Sunday, March 13, 2011 through March 20th we will once again be hosting families from the Interfaith Hospitality Network. If you would be interested in volunteering for this mission, please contact any Deacon. The families we hosted in December found their experience to be quite comfortable and at this time we have learned that all of the families we served have now found permanent housing. EXPERIENCE THE WAY MARCH 6, 2011 A PRAISE AND WORSHIP EVENT This concert is a presentation of the Gospel using narrative, scripture, video, and contemporary Christian music. We will be hosting the concert here at McDonald Presbyterian Church in the sanctuary of Calvary Center. This concert is a partnership between MPC and Third Presbyterian Church Washington. If you missed this great event the first time around when it was held in Washington you do not want to miss it again. Circle of Faith Praise Band from Third Presbyterian Church and MPC Praise Team have joined forces once again to present Experiencing the Way. Mark your calendars for March 7pm. More details to follow. Start spreading the news. Jesus said, I am the way, and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 2 PAGE 2 PASTOR S PAGE-REV. JUSTIN AMSLER Visitor from Ethiopia This month we have the privilege of hosting a very special guest of the Presbytery. As some of you are aware we have begun to assist with a mission partnership to the South West Bethel Synod in Ethiopia that Washington Presbytery has maintained for about ten years. Throughout the length of this partnership it has been very difficult and almost impossible to gain visas for our Brothers and Sisters in Ethiopia to be able to travel here and see our churches in order to connect with us, minister to, and encourage us. Prior to this visit only one other leader from their church was able to gain a visa. Haile Sadins (First name pronounced like the English word highly ) is a passionate and charismatic leader of the Ethiopian church who is sure to inspire us and broaden our understanding of global Christianity. He will be making his first trip to the United States this March 10 th -23 rd. In the photo, Haile is leaning against the wall on the left. His wife Atalalech is beside him, with his one-year-old son Biruk. Rusty Salminen, the Washington Presbytery Coordinator for the Ethiopia Mission Partnership gives this short bio: Haile is 35 and has worked at various jobs in South West Bethel Synod in development and in theology. He is finishing a degree in intercultural theology at a seminary in Hermannsburg, Germany. That's the reason his stay is short; his dean recommended he would need most of his semester break to write his thesis. Besides speaking excellent English, Haile has a wonderful personality. He's representative of what makes people fall in love with the Ethiopians. And while he's serious-minded and sure in his faith (he's the first member of his family to become a Christian), he's also blessed with humor. Lots of charisma. McDonald Presbyterian Church will have the privilege of hosting Haile for Sunday March 20 th. This corresponds with our Hop-a-thon and potluck dinner following worship. He will be giving the Sermon presentation at both the 10:45 AM and the 7:00 PM services of worship. Following the 7:00 PM service of worship there will be a special opportunity for a prayer session with Haile. We have been encouraged to view this visit as preparation for future visits and a deepening relationship. Haile will hopefully visit our Presbytery again several more times for longer periods before his visa expires in November There are many churches who would have been honored to have Haile on one of the two Sunday mornings that he will be with us so please make a special effort to be present in church on Sunday March 20 th to hear about the fastest growing Presbyterian Church in the world, the Ethiopian church.

Recently, some of the schools were returned to Education Board after the government decided they could not afford to run them. They were returned in very bad condition. So now PEB (public education board) is trying to rebuild and improve conditions with our help! The Synod goal is to raise $20, for seed money for a home for girls exposed to abuse and sexual exploitation. It will provide vocational skills, raise public awareness and offer formal education when possible. Executive Director, Veeda Javaid reminds us the meaning 3 Cups of Tea in Pakistan. The first is to show hospitality and understanding, the second, to discuss business and the final cup of tea to seal the deal. We as Presbyterian Women would like to help the Synod to attain their goal A Little Red Teapot will be on the hospitality Table in the New Beginnings Room to receive your offering. We will keep it there for the next few weeks and we thank you for your generosity. MCDONALD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH FUND A permanent fund has been established on the books of the Washington Community Foundation, Inc. known as the McDonald Presbyterian Church Fund. The fund is a part of the foundation and not a separate trust. The McDonald Presbyterian Church Fund was created in July, 2010 by the transfer of the Marguerite Allison Lohman Trust for the Trinity Presbyterian Church and the Marguerite Allison Lohman Trust for the Calvary Presbyterian Church. A check in the amount of $1, was remitted to the church in February which represents the 2011 allocation from the Fund. This year s allocations were applied to the principal of the roof debt. The church will receive annual allocations from the fund based on the contributions, earnings and interest. The 2010 year end balance of the fund was $65,441. This fund is open for contributions at any time and is especially appropriate to name as a beneficiary in wills and bequests. If you have any questions about the fund, you can contact Betsie Trew, president and CEO of the foundation at 724/ or Alvin W. Berthold of McDonald Presbyterian Church.

12 McDonald Presbyterian Church Non Profit Org. US POSTAGE PAID MCDONALD, PA PERMIT NO. 9 Worship Site: 202 West Lincoln Avenue McDonald, PA Offices Located at: 119 Station Street McDonald, PA Telephone: 724/ Return Service Requested Website: March Newsletter MAUNDY THURSDAY SEDER SERVICE THURSDAY, APRIL 21, 2011 Please plan to join us on Thursday, April 21, 2011 for a traditional Seder Meal for our Maundy Thursday Service. Though plans are still the early stage, this service will be held in the Trinity Center Fellowship Hall. It will feature foods, drama and music. More information will be coming in the weekly bulletins and the April Newsletter. The Seder meal is the first feast of the Jewish festival of Passover. It is celebrated in the spring and coincides with the Christian celebration of Easter. There is good reason for this: Jesus last supper, which we remember as part of Maundy Thursday, was a Seder meal, and he used the symbols of Seder-well known to every Jewish person of his day and ours-to proclaim his place in the order of God s universe and plan. The word Seder which means order, and the meal is a strictly ordered process, prescribed and established by God himself for the teaching of his children.
