4 Word and Sacrament In Christian worship Jesus Christ is truly present and active among us, by the power of the Holy Spirit, through the gifts of Word and Sacrament. Wherever the Scriptures are read and proclaimed and the Sacraments of Baptism and the Lord s Supper are celebrated, the Church bears witness to Jesus Christ, the living Word, and proclaims the mystery of faith. 5 Word and Sacrament God s gifts of Word and Sacrament establish and equip the Church as the body of Christ in the world. The mission of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church flows from Baptism, is nourished at the Lord s Supper, and serves to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ to all. In the same way, the Church s ministry emerges from the font, arises from the table, and takes its shape from the Word of the Lord. W : Worship and the Church
6 Word and Sacrament The Service for the Lord s Day is a service of Word and Sacrament. We meet in the presence of the living Lord, who appeared to his disciples on the first day of the week the day he rose from the dead to interpret the Scriptures and break bread. Following Jesus example, the Church proclaims the fullness of the gospel in Word and Sacrament on the Lord s Day. W : The Pattern of Lord s Day Worship

14 From They to We Language W current: Christian worship joyfully ascribes all praise and honor, glory and power to the triune God. In worship the people of God acknowledge God present in the world and in their lives. As they respond to God s claim and redemptive action in Jesus Christ, believers are transformed and renewed. In worship the faithful offer themselves to God and are equipped for God s service in the world.
