1 The Bell and the Well Volume 52 May 2018 Number 4 Pentecost: Pas de Deux Pas de deux is a dance step involving two people. It is characteristic of ballet, and it is recognized by some if not by many in The Nutcracker. A pas de deux is a term used also to describe how two nations get along carefully and delicately, wanting to have a relationship amidst differences yet avoiding any toe-stepping. Pas de deux might be no less a term to describe the church s relationship with the risen Lord. From Old to New Testament, the Bible makes it clear there is a relationship underway. There is conversation taking place between a divine God and very human people. Those people are not talking into thin air or talking to themselves like disturbed individuals. There is a relationship, a conversation underway. God talks and we listen. We talk and God listens. There are questions and answers. There are requests and blessings. At times, there is even silence. On May 20, the church celebrates Pentecost, commonly known as the birthday of the church. It is the moment when we realize we are in a unique relationship. Up to Pentecost, we have been aware of what God is doing and saying. The acts of God have been noted: creation, redemption, blessing, salvation, resurrection. On the other side of Pentecost, the conversation shifts. The church responds to what God has said and done and continues to accomplish. As we listen to God, so now God listens to the church through its responses of work, worship, mission and witness. The marvel and mystery of being God s people is in the conversation. We are in a dialogue. We have a say, a word, a voice in a dialogue that is necessary for life. We are permitted, we are encouraged to tell God whom we are, what we need. We are invited to fill the air with our thoughts, be they confused or cogent. God awaits our word, no matter how nuanced by emotion and experience. Pentecost marks the important shift in the conversation from God speaking to our mission and witness. We mark the shift through the celebration of the Sacrament of a meal. At the Lord s invitation, we acknowledge we are still in the conversation. We let it be known we hear our names being called. God is not talking into thin air. The living God of Jesus Christ is addressing us, you and me. There is a conversation taking place. Faithfully, Gus Succop, Pastor

6 PAGE 6 Quail Hollow Church Preschool Erin Gillis, Director Spring Sing & End-of-Year Despite the threat of thunderstorms and downpours, the sun shone brightly in the sanctuary filled with parents, grandparents, and friends, on Thursday, April 26 th for the annual Preschool Spring Sing. The children sang songs they had been working on all year along accompanied by several hand motions. The program concluded with Tomorrow (The sun will come out tomorrow ) from Annie. We were treated to the first verse being sung as a solo by a child from the 3-year-old class. Jesus said, Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs. (Matthew 19:14) Next up: Teacher Appreciation week (May 7-11) at QHPS. We have incredible teachers who teach and love our children, daily. At the start of the school year, I shared with you the thought that when you enter the Preschool consider yourself one of the special members of an extraordinary family. What a joy it is to see that thought lived out everyday through teachers, children, parents, and church members, all of them working together as members of an extraordinary family. Be on the lookout to learn of the exciting plans for the fall celebration of the Preschool s 40th anniversary!
7 PAGE 7 From Oswald Chambers in My Utmost for His Highest: Yielding... you are that one s slaves whom you obey... (Romans 6: 16) When you yield to something, you will soon realize the tremendous control it has over you. Even though you say, Oh, I can give up that habit whenever I like, you will know you can t. You will find that the habit absolutely dominates you because you willingly yielded to it. It is easy to sing, He will break every fetter, while at the same time living a life of obvious slavery to yourself. But yielding to Jesus will break every kind of slavery in any person s life. Scottish Sunday - May 6, 2018 We remember our Scottish heritage on Sunday, May 6. The Rev. Dr. Richard Burnett will be our preacher. Richard is the editor of the publication, Theology Matters. He has also taught theology at Erskine Theological Seminary. If you have a tartan, either personal favorite or family, wear it that Sunday. A Blessing of the Tartans will be held during worship.
8 PAGE 8 Reid Johnson Memorial Kairos Breakfast Bring a Friend and learn more about Kairos Saturday, May 12, 2018, 8:00 am Everyone is invited to breakfast on Saturday, May 12 to learn more about the Kairos Prison Ministry. Twice a year, the Kairos team holds 72-hour walks where participants receive instruction about Christian faith and life, develop friendship with other Christians, and are encouraged to build small-group fellowships with fellow prison residents which can support them in their walk with Christ on a daily basis. Each month, a Saturday morning reunion is held at the prison to fellowship and worship with, encourage, and be encouraged by the Kairos community. Reid Johnson was a dedicated member and champion of the Kairos Community. He participated regularly in the walks and reunions. The breakfast honors his contributions to the Kairos Ministry. Make plans to attend the breakfast and invite friends who want to learn more about this important ministry in the prisons. It is an incredible way to share God s love with others. Mission Potluck Dinner May 2, 2018, 6:00 pm Lance and Lisa Lawrence will join us for the Mission dinner on May 2 nd. Lance, Lisa, and their three children live, go to school, and work in the Middle East. They will share about their experiences in the Middle East and their interactions with Arab Muslims. 9 PAGE 9 May Scripture Lessons Indeed, the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword. (Hebrews 4: 12) May 6, 6 th Sunday in Resurrection Time (Scottish Sunday): I Peter 2: 1-12 The Rev. Dr. Richard Burnett preaching: But now May 13, 7 th Sunday in Resurrection Time: Acts 1: 15-17, Pastor Succop preaching: The New New Member Committee May 20, Pentecost (Holy Communion): Ezekiel 37: 1-14 Pastor Succop preaching: From Bones to Bodies May 27, Trinity Sunday: John 3: 1-17 Pastor Succop preaching: The How Questions The Breath of God Within Us When we speak about the Holy Spirit, we speak about the breath of God, breathing in us. The Greek word for spirit is pneuma, which means breath. We are seldom aware of our breathing. It is so essential for life that we only think about it when something is wrong with it. The Spirit of God is like our breath. God s spirit is more intimate to us than we are to ourselves. We might not often be aware of it, but without it we cannot live a spiritual life. It is the Holy Spirit of God who prays in us, who offers us the gifts of love, forgiveness, kindness, goodness, gentleness, peace, and joy. It is the Holy Spirit who offers us the life that death cannot destroy. Let us always pray: Come, Holy Spirit, come.
