3 ORIGINAL SIN (WHY THE PURITANS THOUGHT EVERYBODY SUCKED)

4 THE FALL OF MAN Life was good in the Garden of Eden, until human sin got in the way Eve was tempted by a serpent to eat fruit from the tree of knowledge Creation was supposed to be good, but going into the unknown/forbidden part of nature had terrible consequences! Disobeying God to gain knowledge = original sin = humans flawed = everybody suffers

5 Why was eating the fruit bad? What about it made it a sin?

6 PURITAN INTERPRETATION Different religions interpret differently disobedience & knowledge The Puritans focused on the punishments received after the fall: Pain of birth, monthly curses, & lust Women are deceitful Eve was responsible for being seduced, leading Adam astray, and creating shame (Remember what Winthrop warned about?)

8 PURITAN DOS AND DON TS Forbidden No dancing, no theatre, no art, no drinking to excess No Lust, one of the Seven Deadly Sins No enjoyment of sex, no sex outside of marriage, no LGBT+ (Basically sexual deviance/sexual desire = going to hell) Acceptable Celebrate birthdays and nature holidays (Summer Solstice and Winter Solstice) Do: work, pray, eat (repeat) Do: sex is for making kids, that s it

9 HOW TO AVOID SEXUAL DEVIANCE Bundling = giant straight jacket/mummy suit to wrap around themselves Couldn t be overcome with temptation in the night Boarding = nail a board on the bed between male and female sleepers Often lived in one-room houses with extended family or visiting friends

10 WHAT IF YOU DON T FOLLOW THE RULES? Public shaming Whipping post Wearing a sign Branding Dunking stool Pillory or Stocks

11 HOW TO PROTECT YOUR COMMUNITY Demon Hunting Sending men into the woods to kill demons who wanted to lead people astray Believed in certain demons (Succubus = female, Incubus = male) Killing them released the town from trouble

12 DEMON HUNTING THING? The Devil is in the Forest Remember how the New World is wild and scary? Lots of things that could kill them Had to warn against straying away (conformity = survival) BUT nature is still all around them, part of their daily lives

13 WHY DOES THIS MATTER? Your community, your parents, your pastor, everybody tells you to follow the rules. But you re a person. You have a family you care about. You experience the world. You have feelings. How do those two things work together?

14 POETIC PROOF Even though not supposed to be idle, many Puritans kept journals Helped them meditate on God & way to document their holy work Anne Bradstreet even wrote poetry in her journal Educated by her father Came over on the Arabella with her father, husband, and children Felt torn between religious dedication and enjoying worldly experiences
