4 Anne Bradstreet suffered numerous losses during her lifetime. She vividly records one such loss in a poem entitled Upon the Burning of My House ; a poem which describes the emotional turmoil she experienced while watching her family home burn to the ground. Amidst her personal tragedy Bradstreet pens the words, The world no longer let me love, my hope and treasure lies above (qtd. in St. John 67), reminding herself and her reader that our hope and comfort must rest in our eternal God rather than the transient things of this world. Although Bradstreet struggled with the reality of her loss, she forced herself to recall the goodness of God rather than dwelling on her suffering. One need not look far to observe a world filled with similar suffering today. Cancer ravages loved ones. Shooters take innocent lives. Floodwaters destroy family farms. Surrounded by death and destruction, where can one find hope? Many seek hope in work, money, education, or fame, somehow thinking that these will provide them with the security they seek, only to be disappointed in the long run. The Bible tells a different story. The Apostle Paul exhorts believers to set [their] minds on things above, not on earthly things (NIV, Col. 3.2). Christ also tells Christians to store up treasures in heaven because where [our] treasure is, there [our] heart[s] will be also (Matt. 6.20). Bradstreet clearly understood, as all followers of Christ should, that only a heavenward mindset will sustain believers in this fallen and broken world. Though the things of this world never last, Christ offers eternal hope and comfort to those who put their faith in Him.

7 Extended Response #2 OUTLINE (TSL Chapters 1-4) (Lit. Elements Tone and Mood) Writers Inc. defines Mood as the feeling a text arouses in the reader (258), and Tone as the overall feeling, or effect, created by a writer s use of words. This feeling may be serious, humorous, or satiric (261). In these first few chapters of The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne sets a somber tone, and the reader may feel a variety of negative, or dark feelings. In this extended response OUTLINE, explore the mood and tone set in these first four chapters (pp ). What mood or tone does Hawthorne create, and what do you believe to be his purpose in creating this tone or mood? What, specific words or phrases did you find in your reading that helped create this tone or mood? Give at least three textual examples as evidence(use correct in-text citations). Your response must be composed in proper MLA OUTLINE form. You must write in complete sentences but should arrange your sentences as an outline. Be sure you compose a clear thesis statement (underline, please). This assignment will be graded on format and style of writing. No first or second person pronouns should be used in this response. Note: 1. If your assignment is not in proper outline form, it will not be accepted. Review the youtube video posted on my Weebly page for help with correct form. 2. If your outline is not written using complete sentences, it will not be accepted. 3. Although this is an outline, YOU MUST STILL PROOFREAD YOUR WRITING. 9 Hints for Extended Response #2 Outline As you read/annotate, think about the tone/mood! Find 3 examples as you read and mark them in your book! When you ve finished reading/annotating, go back to your marked passages to find a quote for each example (be sure to cite the page number) Each quote should be followed by at least one sentence of explanation/application
