C Amen L Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. 5 GLORIA PRAYER OF THE DAY Occasionally, John the Baptist commemoration falls on a Sunday. Today we are using Scripture and hymns appropriate for the day. L Let us pray together. C Almighty God, by your gracious providence your servant John the Baptist was born to Elizabeth and Zechariah. Grant to your people the wisdom to see your purpose and the openness to hear your will, that the light of Christ may increase in us, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen FIRST READING: MALACHI 3:1-4 The prophet Malachi announces the coming of one who will prepare a way for God s arrival. His burning program of reform will make God s people ready for salvation. 1 See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. 2 But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner s fire and like fullers soap; 3 he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. 4 Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years. 5

PSALM: PSALM 141 (two voices sing the canticle) SECOND READING: ACTS 13:13-26 In Antioch of Pisidia, Paul preaches in the synagogue and recalls the ministry of John the Baptist, showing how John was the pivot point between history and the new acts God was performing through Jesus. 13 Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia. John, however, left them and returned to Jerusalem; 14 but they went on from Perga and came to Antioch in Pisidia. And on the sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down. 15 After the reading of the law and the prophets, the officials of the synagogue sent them a message, saying, Brothers, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, give it. 16 So Paul stood up and with a gesture began to speak: You Israelites, and others who fear God, listen. 17 The God of this people Israel chose our ancestors and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it. 18 For about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness. 19 After he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land as an inheritance 20 for about four hundred fifty years. After that he gave them judges until the time of the prophet Samuel. 21 Then they asked for a king; and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, who reigned for forty years. 22 When he had removed him, he made David their king. In his testimony about him he said, I have found David, son of Jesse, to be a man after my heart, who will carry out all my wishes. 23 Of this man s posterity God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised; 24 before his coming John had already proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25 And as John was finishing his work, he said, What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but one is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of the sandals on his feet. 26 My brothers, you descendants of Abraham s family, and others who fear God, to us the message of this salvation has been sent. 7 GOSPEL ACCLAMATION L The Gospel according to Luke, Chapter 1 C Glory to you, O Lord. GOSPEL: LUKE 1:57-67 [68-80] The birth and naming of John ends his father Zechariah s silence. He announces the child s name given by the angel and speaks a prophecy about the newborn infant. 57 Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. 59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him Zechariah after his father. 60 But his mother said, No; he is to be called John. 61 They said to her, None of your relatives has this name. 62 Then they began motioning to his father to find out what name he wanted to give him. 63 He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, His name is John. And all of them were amazed. 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue freed, and he began to speak, praising God. 65 Fear came over all their neighbors, and all these things were talked about throughout the entire hill country of Judea. 66 All who heard them pondered them and said, What then will this child become? For, indeed, the hand of the Lord was with him. 67 Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke this prophecy: [ 68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has looked favorably on his people and redeemed them. 69 He has raised up a mighty savior for us in the house of his servant David, 70 as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, 71 that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us. 72 Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors, 7

8 and has remembered his holy covenant, 73 the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham, to grant us 74 that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies, might serve him without fear, 75 in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. 76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, 77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the forgiveness of their sins. 78 By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, 79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. 80 The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day he appeared publicly to Israel.] L The gospel of the Lord. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

10 THE LORD S PRAYER L Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen BLESSING L May God, whose power working in us can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine, grant you the gifts of faith and hope. 11 This is an addition to Pastor Lyn's announcement regarding the organ pipes. The organ technician found many pipes out of tune in the division that hangs over the balcony. He discovered that someone had cleaned the area between the pipes, and he'll need to make a return visit. All of the pipes will need to be tuned and the temperament will need to be reset. This is at least a three-hour process for which he'll need to use a ladder and work from the front of the pipes. The church will be billed extra. Please leave the pipes and the area surrounding them alone! Thank you, Barbara Vukich 11

12 PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Growing in faith and discipleship, we give thanks for God s merciful compassion as we pray for the church, the world, and all in need. Empowering God, you call your church to boldly proclaim your day of salvation. Bring unity to the faithful and provide opportunities for collaboration as we bring your good news to the world. Let the youth of our churches hear your love for them (as they gather in Houston this coming week). Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Creating God, you call forth life from the swirling waters of chaos, and you pour out water that nourishes the earth. Send forth ample rain for crops to flourish. Speak peace wherever homes, towns, businesses, and lands are damaged by hurricanes, floods, and tropical storms. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Powerful God, come to the aid of all nations and leaders who fear storms of conflict, violence, or injustice. Raise up advocates and peacemakers to speak truth and hope into the world. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Saving God, grant endurance and comfort to all who suffer affliction, hardship, hunger, violence, or sleepless nights of pain or anxiety. Give your promise of healing to all who long for salvation. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. God of goodness, we pray for you to wrap your loving arms around all we name before you, aloud or in silence. (pause) Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Covenant God, you call us by name and claim us as your own. We pray for those who prepare for baptism, those who have recently been baptized, and all who are called by baptism into lives of proclamation and service. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Eternal God, we give thanks for all the saints who have commended themselves to you in every way and who have endured in faith. Bring us at last to the acceptable time of salvation for all creation. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Gracious God, we lift to you these prayers and the prayers of our hearts, trusting in your everlasting love and mercy, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen 12
