2 EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST PROPER 20 September 23, 2018 AS WE GATHER Though today s Old Testament Reading happened about 2,600 years ago, it portrays a circumstance that may ring familiar to many of us. The prophet Jeremiah faithfully proclaimed God s Word to an increasingly unfaithful people. Their anger and attempts to silence Jeremiah blindsided him. If he was doing God s will, shouldn t people appreciate and thank him? We like to hear feel good stories about people today being faithful to God and receiving respect and adulation in return. But we also hear stories and sometimes live real-life events where we act or speak in Christian kindness, yet get blindsided by an angry or ungrateful response. The rejection of Jeremiah points forward to Jesus rejection by His own people. Blindsided by both Judas who betrayed Him and Peter who denied Him, Jesus persevered in faithfully fulfilling His mission to suffer, die, and be raised for the very people who despised Him. In those times when we are blindsided by negative reactions to God s will for the world, our Savior empathizes with us and sustains us by the Holy Spirit. And because of the Father s love for us in Christ, there are times even now when we are blindsided by Jesus mercy though we know we don t deserve it. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Psalm 25:6 7 P: God is our helper. The Lord is the upholder of our lives. Let us then, assured of God s love, confess our sin before God and one another. A time of silence is observed. P: We confess to You that we are by nature sinful. C: We have sinned in thought, word, and deed. We cannot free ourselves. P: We thought we were wise, when we were actually foolish. C: We have acted out of jealousy or selfish ambition. P: We have relished and reveled in conflict both within and outside the Christian community. C: We have failed to seek Your help in resolving differences great and small. I did not know it was against me they devised schemes, saying, Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name be remembered no more. 20 But, O LORD of hosts, who judges righteously, who tests the heart and the mind, let me see your vengeance upon them, for to you have I committed my cause. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all. EPISTLE James 3:13 4:10 13 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. 4 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? 10 PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: The Lord God calls us to turn to Him and live. So now let us turn to God in prayer, looking not only to our own interests, but also to the interests of others. For the Church throughout the world, that, rather than argue about who is the greatest, we serve the lost and the least of this world and share the hope that is ours in Jesus Christ. For missionaries at home and abroad, that their proclamation and demonstration of the Gospel bring hope and healing to people in despair. O God, C: hear our prayer. P: For the world, that the leaders of our nation and of nations throughout the world promote peace and well-being for all whom they serve. For those who serve in dangerous occupations that help to keep the peace soldiers, police officers, judges that they be kept safe from harm and fulfill their tasks confident that they are part of establishing and keeping the good order of society that God desires for us. O God, C: hear our prayer. P: For the needs of our local community, that the hungry are fed, that the homeless find shelter, that the unemployed find work, that the wealthy share generously, that the peacemakers not lose heart. O God, C: hear our prayer. P: For those who are experiencing distress, [especially...]. For those who are sick, that, according to God s holy will, they experience healing and renewal. For those who are dying, that they take comfort in knowing that nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. For those who are grieving, that they experience peace in the hope of the resurrection. O God, C: hear our prayer. P: For our own congregation, that we live by the wisdom from above pure, peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. O God, C: hear our prayer. P: In thanksgiving for those who have gone before us in faith and have died, [remembering...], that their examples of faith and good fruits inspire us to the same, until that day when we are all gathered around the throne of the Lamb, singing His praise. 11 SACRAMENT We believe, teach and confess that in the Lord s Supper, Christ comes to us and his body and blood are really present to forgive our sins and assure us of everlasting life and salvation. We, as baptized believers, prepare for Communion by examining ourselves, repenting of our sins, anticipating our Lord s forgiveness and drawing on Christ s power in the Sacrament to help us live an amended life for Christ. To those who share this confession with us, we invite you to join us as we welcome you to the Lord s Table. PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. 2 Timothy 4:22 C: And also with you. 12 PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING P: All thanks and praise to You, Lord God, for the mercy and salvation You have demonstrated throughout the ages. Thank You for sustaining and upholding the prophet Jeremiah, even when his faithfulness to You caused him to be despised by so many. Thank You for Jesus, who went all the way to the cross for our sake and died to forgive our sins. Thank You for raising Him up from the grave and exalting His name above every name. Thank You for giving us this humble Meal, where we receive Christ s body and blood, so that our lives reflect the humility and self-sacrifice of our Lord Jesus. Thank You for nourishing us in both body and soul with this bread of life. C: Amen. THE WORDS OF OUR LORD P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. 16 Concordia Lutheran Church s Covenant with One Another How Do We Love One Another at Concordia Lutheran Church? 1. We will behave in a spirit of forgiveness always speaking well of others with love and kindness knowing that God created every human being in His image and we will always show respect for others despite our mutual failures, acknowledging shortfalls and willing to forget prior harms. 2. We will promote and practice honest conversations following the 8 th Commandment to speak well of each other, avoiding gossip by redirecting people to the appropriate person and avoiding anything that would cause divisions in the Body of Christ. 3. We will lift up each other in prayer in all that we do by turning to God for guidance and support, showing our gratitude and thanksgiving, and realizing we depend on Him for our entire existence. 4. We will offer a hand of hospitality welcoming all people by acknowledging the presence of others, greeting everyone with concern for them and openly sharing our biblical faith with everyone in word and deed. 5. We will be positive and joyful sharing openly our happiness in the Lord with fun, positive humor and inclusive fellowship always defending each other, speaking well of each other, and putting the best construction on everything.
