Hopefully, all are part of a Group Reunion and participating in Ultreya. If not, go to your area s Ultreya or contact your sponsor or a team member from the Weekend (you were given a roster in your take-home packets), and they can assist. It is in sharing with your brothers and sisters in Christ about your attempts to grow in Piety, Study, and (apostolic) Action that you will persevere and progress in the spiritual life that s where you will find total security!! Remember that Christ is counting on you, and you said that you would count on Him. He gave you the gift of the Cursillo Method of Group Reunion and Ultreya to help you in the Fourth Day; these tools will help you live each day in a more focused way, that focus being Christ. 1 Comments from Participants of the Recent Weekends (Kate Davis, St. Patrick Parish, Imperial, NE) I didn't realize I went up the mountain until I woke up in the valley on Thursday. I want to be back on the mountain but the reality is that God asks us to walk in the valley. I am watchful for opportunities and when one arises it brings me the peace of the mountain again. Cursillo has also changed my prayer life. Instead of running a marathon, I am starting to appreciate sincerity of prayer. He is teaching me to be still and know that He is God. Words don't express how Cursillo has opened me up to the Lord. It is truly something which must be lived and fails explanation. De Colores! Kate (Conrad Buhrman, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, North Platte, NE) My Cursillo Weekend was a great opportunity for me to renew my commitment to God and understand that we are called to piety, study, and action all through our lives and that they are all intertwined. I have especially enjoyed the weekly small group follow up sessions - they have been particularly important to my spiritual growth. Conrad (Fr. Bernard Lorenz, St. Patrick Parish, Imperial, NE) My experience again was that Cursillo is at the heart of the mission of the church, in forming the weekly group reunion groups that, as a small spirited group of disciples, can bring Christ to the world and build up each participating disciple with great Christian comradery and support. Those small groupings are the key!!! Bless you all. Father Lorenz (Fr. Matthew Vandewalle, St. John Nepomucene (Weston) and St. Vitus (Touhy) I loved to see that the guys on the Cursillo weekend, who were already good guys, were nevertheless very moved by what they experienced. The kindness and grace they felt surrounded by gave them a new sense of joy and living in grace such that they want to live the Life of Christ in a deeper way. One quiet, good man who made the Cursillo told me at the end Thanks Father for the best weekend ever. I love to see those good guys have a real conversion experience and want to then bring that to their home environment. (Thai Nguyen, Sacred Heart, Crete, NE) My first Cursillo revealed the core message of Christianity to me, which is to love others as Jesus loves us. It completely changed my mindset regarding who I am... who I was created to be, which then changed my trajectory in life. I am who I am now because of the Cursillo. The Cursillo provides us a practical guide and example on how to live the life Jesus wanted us to by providing us with deep friendships and a clear method on building those friendships. Since my first weekend, the subsequent weekends on team have served to be re-directions, setting up the course of my year. It re-focuses me and reaffirms my perpetual vocation, which is to love and serve Christ by loving and serving others in my life. The friendships built and then rekindled on each weekend, on each SOL, each Ultreya, and most importantly, on each Grouping, have been lasting sources of comfort and reminders of Christ's tangible love on Earth. God is love, and in the Cursillo, there is a lot of love. 2

The Vietnamese-language Group gathers on the second Sunday of each month after the 9:00am Mass (about 10:15am) at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Lincoln. Not Currently Having Ultreyas Please participate in a neighboring Ultreya For more information, contact John Springer (402) , Lay Director Plattsmouth-Nebraska City Weston-David City-Shelby-Wahoo 2. Precursillo and Three Days Recall that in the PRECURSILLO we identify, befriend, and help someone who is searching for something that they think is happiness or fulfillment, but which we know is really Somebody -- Jesus Christ. NOW is the time for the work of the Precursillo!! Actually, the work of Precursillo is never done we should always be working on friendships with those around us (and sometimes those we have yet to encounter), in order that we might help those we come in contact with on a daily basis to become friends of Christ. A big part of Precursillo work (and that work isn t just about 3 inviting someone to a Cursillo Weekend) can be very slow and time-consuming (it can literally take years) but if you don t begin, then will that person ever come to know Christ as a Friend? We should especially be alert for the far away (those who don t know God well or don t know Him at all). There is a lot to do in the Precursillo (making a friend, being a friend, and bringing your friend to Christ). But the key is to begin the work, always in a spirit of Palanca (talking to God about your friend before talking to your friend about God). Your mind/heart/will should be set to the highest level to persevere in winning this person for Christ. As we are in the midst of the Easter season, we were all reminded at Easter of our Baptismal promises may we ALL accept our Baptismal commitment to live the Gospel and do our part in building up the Body of Christ!! Living Cursillo is a great way to do just that when an opportunity presents itself, rely on your growth in Piety and Study to help you be apostolic (Action). After all, you and Christ are an overwhelming majority!! The next THREE DAY WEEKENDS have not yet been discussed. Initial discussions will be held during the May Secretariat meeting. In terms of the three phases of the Cursillo Movement: In the Precursillo, the person seeks Christ. In the Three-Day Cursillo, the person encounters Christ. In the Postcursillo, the person follows Christ. It is here that we daily live what is fundamental for being Christian. 3. Postcursillo Region VI Spring Encounter (April 22-24, 2016) The Region VI Spring Encounter was hosted by the Diocese of Wichita, KS on April 22-24, It was held at the Hiawatha Campus & Retreat Center, Wichita, KS. There were approximately 115 cursillistas who participated in the Encounter: 21 attended the English language sessions (3 from the Lincoln Diocese) and the rest attended the Spanish language sessions. All of the prayer times, Masses, and the Ultreya included both language groups. The three English workshops dealt with the Precursillo phase of the Cursillo Movement, and the spiritual presentation dealt with reflections on Mercy from the Catechism. The gathering was joyful, instructive, prayerful and very community-oriented National Encounter (August 4-7, 2016) The 26th National Encounter is being hosted by the Archdiocese of Chicago at Lewis University, Romeoville, IL (near Chicago) on August 4-7, A registration form for the 26 th National Encounter was included in March/April newsletter. See the National Cursillo webpage ( for more details (i.e., speakers, etc.). 4

3 Grand Ultreya Sunday, June 26, 2016 St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in North Platte, NE What is a Grand Ultreya? The Grand Ultreya is a FAMILY event!! This is a diocesan-wide, family-oriented event. It will last from approximately 2:30pm (Mass) 5:30/6:00pm (3:30pm Ultreya followed by potluck supper). The Mass fulfills the Sunday obligation. If you have already gone to Mass and/or need to leave after the Ultreya, that works, too come for whatever part you can. This will be a potluck dinner, so each family should bring a dish to share. The Secretariat will bring plates, napkins, glasses and plastic-ware; coffee/iced tea/water will be provided. Where will it be held? St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish Hall, 3301 Echo Drive, North Platte, NE We will gather for the 2:30pm Mass in the Church, then move to the Parish Hall for the Grand Ultreya and meal. Therefore, the event will go on rain or shine. Why have a Grand Ultreya? Our diocese is widespread geographically and it is rare that cursillistas from the east and west all get together. This is a time for cursillistas AND THEIR FAMILIES and friends to take part in a Cursillo event. Past years have been great fun Please come and renew friendships or make new ones! 5 4. School of Leaders (SOL) The April SOL was held April 9, 2016, at St. Ann Parish in Doniphan. The Technique Talk was from Chapter 11 ( Go and Make Disciples ) of Fr. Frank Salmani s book, Whom Shall I Send? The Doctrinal Talk was from Pope St. John Paul II s encyclical Dives in Misericordia ( Rich in Mercy ). The June SOL (all language groups are invited) will be held on June 11, 2016, at St. Ann Parish in Doniphan. As usual, there will be a 9:00am Mass for those who would like to participate, followed by the actual SOL beginning at 9:30am. The Technique Talks will continue from Fr. Frank Salmani s book, Whom Shall I Send? The Doctrinal Talks will continue to come from Pope St. John Paul II s encyclical Dives in Misericordia ( Rich in Mercy ). From the Lay Director For Lent, like many of you, I read Rediscover Jesus by Matthew Kelly (I read one section each day). Many of the sections seemed to zero in on many topics of the rollos we hear on Cursillo Weekends, but I will just focus on Chapters 36 and 37 The Biggest Lie and The Holy Moment. Remember the Piety rollo? We may not think we can be holy people, but the truth is we can! The biggest lie the devil tells us is that holiness is not possible. God calls us to holiness, and we can be holy. The Holy Moment chapter gives concrete examples on how to create holy moments little steps that make us aware of how God is reaching out to us. In the Piety rollo, we talked about this being aware of God s presence, doing everything with God, talking to God, praying always, and so on. This opens our hearts, minds, and souls to new realities we truly can be holy! In 2007 (March 25, Solemnity of the Annunciation), I made my Consecration to Mary. I renew it every year with a 31-day preparation using the book I used in 2007 My Ideal, Jesus Son of Mary by Father Emil Neubert, S.M., first published in I see this book around, so others must use it, too. The book is basically presented in two parts. In the first part of the book, Jesus sets forth the Ideal, and then sets forth the requirements for the Ideal. In the second part, Mary explains transformation into Jesus, followed by a description of her soldier. Each year I underline and highlight more of the book, it speaks to me in so many ways. I want to focus on what we hear in the rollos and then try to live as cursillistas. What follows comes from the second part of the book; it discusses good, solid guidelines for those trying to live the Christian life (the italicized sections are quotes from the book). Pray before taking action, so that God grants it the success which He desires... pray during your activities so that God continues to act through you. Pray after your action to thank God if you have succeeded, or to beg Him to accomplish His work nevertheless if you seem to have failed. Sacrifice before every apostolic effort, in addition to praying, offer some sacrifice. If 6

4 the work is particularly difficult, prepare and accompany it with particularly hard sacrifices. To an apostle who makes generous sacrifices, God sends all sorts of trials as a special reward... Do not be astonished if the devil tries to ruin your work. Offer your prayers and sacrifices to Jesus through Mary s hands so your intentions for your apostolate may be realized. Alone, you are a weak sinner; united to Jesus, you participate in His Divine nature. Suffering by itself remains unfruitful, but once it is united to the sufferings of Jesus, it participates in their Divine efficacy. Make a friend. Be honest and upright be straightforward and sincere be conscientious and faithful in your duties strive to appear just what you are be Christian your conduct will be a sermon take an interest in others. Love them as their Redeemer and Mother loves them. Being an apostle means bringing souls to Christ and giving Christ to souls. To speak as an apostle, you need not preach Truth by its very nature is attractive The thing which convinces people is not what you say, but what you are. Before each conversation, ask Jesus and Mother Mary what to say. Group reunion, Ultreya, community: Have like-minded companions. Do not remain isolated. Join with others who have the same ideals as you have. The far-away and study of the environment: A sincere, ardent, generous unbeliever is better fitted to fight your spiritual battles with you than is a Christian who lacks energy and the spirit of sacrifice. May you be blessed for your prayers and Palanca for Cursillo. Remember, Group Reunion and Ultreya provide the total security that Cursillo gives us for persevering in our Fourth Day. Please go to your Ultreya, someone there needs you, and you will find that you need them as well. There you will experience over and over the community of faith we all knew during the Three Day Weekend. If there is not an Ultreya near you, consider a road trip with some friends times/dates/locations for upcoming Ultreyas are always listed in the Newsletter. Make that phone call grab someone after Mass reach out. Take note of when the School of Leaders is and try to come when you can, you will be glad you did. Cursillo needs all of us, Cursillo needs you. May God bless you! De Colores!! John Springer From the Spiritual Advisor We are journeying through the Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis. The Doctrinal Talks at the School of Leaders (SOL) during the Year of Mercy are reflections on St. John Paul II s Encyclical Dives in Misericordia ( Rich in Mercy ). In paragraph #3, St. John Paul II observed The Gospel writer who particularly treats of these themes [of mercy] in Christ s teaching is Luke, whose Gospel has earned the title of the Gospel of mercy. If I ever heard that the Gospel of Luke was the Gospel of Mercy, I had forgotten. During Liturgical Year C (this year), the Gospel that is primarily proclaimed at Sunday Masses is the Gospel of Luke. Thus, I wonder if Pope Francis chose this particular year to celebrate 7 the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy in part because the Gospel of Luke (the Gospel of Mercy) is proclaimed. One interesting point that St. John Paul II made was in an extended footnote (FN 52) in paragraph #4, which deals with the Old Testament concept of Mercy. The footnotes comment that the English language has one word for mercy, while the Hebrew language has more than once word for mercy (I am combining what the encyclical says with my notes from the seminary; the italicized words come from the encyclical) as follows: (1) HEN is the mercy that a master shows to a servant (and in the Old Testament, a servant was a member of the family rather than a slave), or the mercy that a King would show to his subjects, or a teacher to his/her students. (2) HESED is the mercy between covenant partners, especially the covenant of God and His people, or the covenant of love between husband and wife. God shows His mercy as love that gives, love more powerful than betrayal, grace stronger than sin Therefore Israel, although burdened with guilt for having broken the covenant, cannot lay claim to God s hesed on the basis of (legal) justice; yet it can and must go on hoping and trusting to obtain it, since the God of the covenant is really responsible for his love. The fruits of this love are forgiveness and restoration to grace, the reestablishment of the interior covenant. (3) RAHAMIM which is a much more visceral word (derived from the word visera, which refers to intestines or gut feelings). This is the kind of feeling that a mother has for a child in her womb. While hesed highlights the marks of fidelity to self and of responsibility for one s own love (which are in a certain sense masculine characteristics), rahamim, in its very root, denotes the love of a mother (rehem = mother s womb) Of this love one can say that it is completely gratuitous, not merited, and that in this aspect it constitutes an interior necessity: an exigency of the heart. It is, as it were, a feminine variation of the masculine fidelity to self expressed by hesed. Against this psychological background, rahamim generates a whole range of feelings, including goodness and tenderness, patience and understanding, that is, readiness to forgive. One of the Priests who taught me in the Seminary made a practical application of the use of these three words to Psalm 51:1, which says Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness; in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense. Thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me. He observed that all three words (Hen, Hesed, Rahamim) are used in the first verse of Psalm 51. In a sense David, who is the author of Psalm 51, is saying to God, Whatever kind of mercy you can give me, I ask for give me Hen mercy or Hesed mercy or Rahamim mercy. Please give me mercy. In our own lives, we should reflect on the mercy that God has shown to us and continually call out to Him for mercy, and then be merciful to our brothers and sisters. I invite you to come to SOL to be with other cursillistas and to help in doing the work of Cursillo in our Diocese, and maybe learn more about Mercy in the process. De Colores!! Fr. Mark Seiker 8

7 School of Leaders June 11, N 5 th Street (5 th and Cedar Streets) St. Ann Parish, Doniphan, NE EVERY Cursillista is invited and welcome The Cursillo Movement needs your participation will you help? School of Leaders Agenda: 9:00am --- 9:30am -- ~1:30pm Mass (for those who wish to assist) Group Reunion; Technique Talk; Doctrinal (Spiritual) Talk; Work Session; Lunch (bring a sack lunch); Visit to Blessed Sacrament. Clean up and departure (estimated time may be slightly earlier may be slightly later ). Topics of Talks The Technique Talks will come from the book Whom Shall I Send? (Discerning the Will of God) by Fr. Frank Salmani (the books will again be available for purchase at SOL for $8.00). Each chapter presents a stand-alone discussion of a particular topic related to discernment in other words, the chapters don t build on one another and your inability to come to an earlier SOL shouldn t keep you away. The following is an excerpt from the Prologue of the book: This book addresses two basic questions: First, What does God want from me right now? And second, Is God calling me to be a Cursillo leader or some other work? Every Christian needs to know what God s will is for him or her. This book is a process to help discern the Lord s call. The book does not attempt to tell anyone where they should be or what they should be doing. That is up to the individual. What the book does tell us is what God expects of anyone who commits themselves to Him in any way. The specific nature of the call is up to each individual to discern. The Doctrinal Talks will be from Pope Saint John Paul II s Encyclical Dives in Misericordia ( Rich in Mercy ). Please bring the following with you to the SOL (if you have them): A sack lunch Leaders Manual, if you have one (available for purchase at SOL) We ask that you consider making a donation to help fund the work of Cursillo.
