American University Student Government Annual Internal Diversity Assessment President Yamillet Payano Written by Rafael Cestero, Director of Diversity Equity and Inclusion Executive Summary: One of the primary goals of American University Student Government (AU Student Government) is to foster diversity, equity and inclusion within the university and the organization, to make sure that all students feel welcome on campus. Thus, on February 18th of 2018, the American University Undergraduate Senate passed bill asking the AU Student Government Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to design and administer an annual assessment that helps us analyze the diversity of AU Student Government. This report is summarizing the results from the first survey conducted in April 2018, which we hope helps us understand: How to ensure that AU Student Government membership reflect the diversity and richness of the American University Student Body How to ensure that all who want to be part of AU Student Government feel welcome and engaged, and How the entire AU Student Government community can advocate for communities on campus more efficiently The survey was conducted online, and the number of responses is assumed to be representational. There is no margin of error, as it is not a random sample of the population studied. This is the first step towards analyzing the diversity of AU Student Government in order to make sure that we meet our goal to foster diversity, equity and inclusion not only on the university but also within AU Student Government itself.
2 Summary of Findings: One of the issues identified in the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion conversations was the lack of information on the number of individuals from diverse identities who are participating in AU Student Government. To get a sense of the diversity of AU Student Government a digital survey was administered. The four main takeaways from the survey data are: 97 members of student government filled out the survey The majority of respondents, 36.44% are part of the School of Public Affairs. Furthermore, 48.89% of Student Government is White/Caucasian leaving 51.11% of Student Government being people of color or mixed race. The survey showed that Student Government is 2.25% international students compared to an 11% university-wide. Method: The survey was created with the review from a committee comprised of the advisor of Student Activities, Director of KPU, Director of Women s Initiative, Director of CASE, Director of SUB, Director of Founders, Chair of JCEP, and the Speaker of the Undergraduate Senate. The committee members offered feedback as the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion designed the survey with guidance from the Center for Diversity and Inclusion as well as the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment. This was an online survey that was distributed among all members of AUSG for a data collection period from April 9th to April 23rd (2 weeks). After the two week collection period, the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion took two weeks to compile this report. As you go through the report you will find further information about the questions that were asked in the survey and the results. The survey was designed to have open-ended questions, as we did not want respondents to feel categorized.
3 Data: Q1 - Please indicate which branch of AUSG you are apart of: - Selected Choice 0 34 Undergr Senat 4 3 Executi ve... Preside nt's... 9 Student Boar 17 Kenned y Women s Center for... Founder 's Judicial Board Election s... 7 Not Listed: Q10 - Please indicate your primary school(s) of study: School of Public Affairs College of Arts and Sciences Kogod School of Business School of International... School of Communications What can be seen from this is that AU Student Government has an over-proportionately number of students from the School of Public Affairs with 36.44% compared to a 20.61% university-wide. Similarly, the comparisons for the other schools are, respectively: CAS 18.64% : 26.67%, Kogod 9.32% : 14.9%, SIS 20.34% : 25.27%, SOC 15.25% : 12.52%. What the student government should look to do in the future is find ways that they can engage with these underrepresented schools, especially Kogod School of Business, to make sure that all students have a voice, as different schools have different needs.
4 Q11 - Please indicate your class by credit hours: Freshman (0-29 credits) Sophomore (30-59 credits) Junior (60-89 credits) Senior (90+ credits) The difference between classes within student government is minimal. This might allude that by having equal numbers from all classes, student government is able to understand the concerns at all levels of the undergraduate community. This report commends the student government in their recruitment among students of different classes. Q9 - Please indicate you age: 17 or younger or older
5 Q2 - Please indicate the primary racial/ethnic group with which you identify: - Selected Choice African American/Black 14 American Indian/Alaskan... - Asian/Pacific Islander 11 Latino/Hispanic 9 Middle Eastern 7 White/Caucasian Prefer Not to Respond - Not Listed: Shown by the data above, 48.89% of Student Government is White/Caucasian leaving 51.11% of the Student Government being people of color or mixed race. This number is compared to a 34% of student s university-wide being students of color. While this comparison is commendable it is necessary to break down the data further. When looking at the breakdown you can see, that there are 14 people in student government who identify as African American/Black. This is 15.56% of the student government and when you compare it to the 9.3% African American/Black students university-wide, we have a higher percentage of this identity group. On the other hand, we only have 10% of student government identifying as Latino/Hispanic compared to a 13.6% university-wide, leaving Student Government with a lower percentage than the university as a whole. Additionally, there is a higher percentage in Asian/Pacific Islander within Student Government, with the percentage being 12.22% and the number campus-wide being 6.5%. Student Government also has 7 people identifying as middle eastern and 0 identifying as American Indian/Alaskan Native/Aleut. The university unfortunately does not collect data on middle eastern identity campus-wide, but the university does have less than 1% of its population being American Indian/Alaskan Native/Aleut. Upon reflection, while we have made advances to increase racial/ethnic diversity within AU Student Government there are lower percentages in certain identity groups. These identity groups should be the focus of our continued diversity recruitment. Finally, AU Student Government should advocate for the university to collect data on middle eastern identifying students on campus.
6 Q4 - Please indicate whether you are an international student: Yes 3 No 87 Prefer Not to Respond **NOTE: One response in this section was invalid making the number of international students 2 International students are continually underrepresented and not thought about when thinking of diversity, equity, and inclusion. With that said, 11% of AU's student body is comprised of international students. In AU Student Government there are only 2 international students, making it 2.25%. With the understanding of this data, it is recommended that AU Student Government, as a whole, empower more international students to be involved in student government.
7 Q8 - Please indicate the tradition or religion with which you primarily identify: Agnostic 10 Atheist 13 Baha i Buddhist Mahayana Buddhist Sokka Gakkai Buddhist Therevada - Christian Anglican 1 Christian Assemblies of God - Christian Baptist (American... 2 Christian Baptist (Independent... - Christian Baptist (National... 1 Christian Baptist (Progressive... - Christian Baptist (Southern... 1 Christian Catholic (Roman... 8 8 Similar to internationality, religion tends not to be thought about when discussing diversity, equity, and inclusion. The majority of religious representation in AU Student Government is of the Christian faith. It is highly encouraged that the student government consider religion when discussing diversity, equity, and inclusion as it is imperative to our understanding of equality. ** For this data compilation Straight and Heterosexual were combined to the category of Heterosexual The majority, 59.52%, of AU Student Government identifies as heterosexual. AU Student Government is also composed of 16.67% bisexual, 11.90% Gay, 5.95% Queer, 2.38% Asexual and around 1% Pansexual and Female. Thus, it is important that two things happen with this data. One, AU Student Government must engage and encourage people of different sexual orientation within their body. Secondly, it is important for student government to have conversations with these identity groups on campus in order to further understand the issues and concerns they have.
9 ** For this data compilation Male and Female were considered to be Cis-gender As shown, there is not a large variety of diversity among gender expression with 50.57% Female and 47.13% Male. The student government should examine how we can empower more people of varying gender expressions to participate in student government. Also, AU Student Government should make sure that we are participating in conversations with these less present identities Finally, there should be an understanding that all gender expressions are welcome, and their opinions are excepted. Conclusion: This report is a step in the right direction, as AU Student Government continues to prioritize diversity, equity and inclusion. There were many takeaways from this report, and while we have done a great job at diversifying AU Student Government, it is important to continue working on recruitment. While this survey yields invaluable information, future examination of the questions posed in the survey might be necessary. With that said, this survey was commissioned to solely analyze the numerical diversity of AU Student Government so that it may begin to work to be more diverse, equitable, and inclusive. This assessment was not written to lay out any of the plans or initiatives for diversity, equity and inclusion and those plans will be published in subsequent communications.
