So we re going to come right out and say something that probably won t shock you: we re not perfect. We try to be real, transparent, and honest. But we even fail at that sometimes. You may feel ignored or unappreciated in some way this morning, but that certainly is not our intention. Please allow us to get to know you better we all came to worship a Loving God. But here s the thing: We don t come to church to meet perfect people. We come to meet a perfect God. He s inviting us to worship today. He is good and His love endures forever. And His is a love that was consummated on a cross and vindicated in an empty tomb. Jesus won the battle against sin, death and the devil. He freed us. 3 Gather! WELCOME & GREETING OF THE PEACE GO DEEPER THIS LENT as we journey with Christ to the cross and empty tomb by using one of our Lenten devotionals. There are two options: The Parables of Lent daily devotionals and Take Up My Cross and Follow! (childrens). Both are available at the Welcome Center, free for the taking. INVOCATION & CALL TO WORSHIP The word Invocation is from the Latin for call upon, the words In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit spoken at the beginning of the service; serves as a reminder of Baptism. P: We begin in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. A HUGE THANK YOU to the Board of Ed and Missions for hosting tonight s meal and for all who helped serve and provided food. Everyone s efforts with serving, preparing, and cleaning up are truly appreciated. JOIN US FOR HOLY WEEK as we continue MARCH MADNESS with the message Power Play (Mark 14:43-52) on Maundy Thursday (4/13) and The Final Door (Mark 15:25-39) on Good Friday (4/14). Both services begin at 6:30pm (no meal prior to worship). THE EXTINGUISHING OF THE LENTEN CANDELABRA During the season of Lent we journey with Jesus through the pain and agony He experienced on His way to Calvary s cross. Piece by piece, everything was stripped from Jesus. As Lent begins, the entire Lenten Candelabra is lit. Each week, as we step closer to the death of our Lord, Jesus Christ, we extinguish a new candle as a reminder of the life that was slowly taken from Him. As each candle is snuffed out, ponder all Christ went through for you. HYMN - Children of the Heavenly Father (LSB725) Children of the heav nly Father Safely in His bosom gather; Nestling bird nor star in heaven Such a refuge e er was given. God His own doth tend and nourish; In His holy courts they flourish. From all evil things He spares them; In His mighty arms He bears them. Neither life nor death shall ever From the Lord His children sever; Unto them His grace He showeth, And their sorrows all He knoweth. Though He giveth or He taketh, God His children ne er forsaketh; His the loving purpose solely To preserve them pure and holy. 10 3

4 COLLECT P: In this holy season the Son of God humbles himself so that we receive mercy. C: Humble me once again, O God, that my life would be pleasing and acceptable to you. P: In this holy season the Son of God rushes out to greet us in the midst of our sin, like a father welcoming a lost child. C: Remind me, O God, of the power of your forgiveness that covers over all my sins and gives me a new beginning. P: In this holy season the Son of God enters into his Passion and death so that we are exalted. C: Grant me your grace, O God, that my faith in Jesus would be pleasing and acceptable to you. Amen. CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION Confession is the act by which one admits or confesses sin(s) and the guilt of sin. Absolution literally means set free and is a Latin term used by theologians as a translation of the biblical word aphiemi, meaning, to set free, cancel, or forgive. P: Too often in our selfishness we squander the gifts God gives to us. Let us confess the sins of our hearts and lives to our Lord who hears and forgives: C: Most merciful God, we confess that our very nature is sinful. We do not love you with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. We do not love our neighbors as ourselves. When we use and abuse the good gifts you give to us, we display our evil and conceit. We don t even deserve to be called your servants, let alone your children. By our selfishness we have sinned against you and against others in thought, word and deed. Forgive us, most holy God. (Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self examination) P: The Lord Jesus took on the punishment of all of us prodigals. His sacrifice means that our Heavenly Father comes to greet us with grace that is unearned and undeserved. He celebrates our new life with his forgiving love. Because Jesus took on the punishment for our prodigal ways, all of your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH LORD S PRAYER The Lord s Prayer is the model prayer Jesus taught to the twelve disciples (Matthew 6:9-13). Sometimes it is called the Our Father, after the first words of the prayer. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 6 11 And he said, There was a man who had two sons. 12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me. And he divided his property between them. 13 Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living. 14 And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. 16 And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything. 17 But when he came to himself, he said, How many of my father s hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants. 20 And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. 21 And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. 22 But the father said to his servants, Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. 23 And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. 24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to celebrate. 25 Now his older son was in the field, and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 And he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. 27 And he said to him, Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and sound. 28 But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, 29 but he answered his father, Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him! 31 And he said to him, Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. 32 It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. Creed originates from the Latin word credo, I believe. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
