1 Grace Lutheran Church Companion Congregation: Msindo Parish in Tanzania Welcome to Worship Sixteenth Sunday After Pentecost September 9, :00 a.m. Liturgical worship with piano Eclectic Setting
OUR STATEMENT OF MISSION Grace Lutheran Church is a community of faith, centered in worship, held in grace, strengthened in love, sent forth in mission, in Jesus name. Welcome! If this is your first time worshipping at Grace, you picked an exciting time to join us! We will be holding worship in Grace Hall while our main entrance, Gathering Hall and Sanctuary are being renovated. Please join us for coffee, tea, and donuts after the service. We apologize for any inconvenience during these renovations. If you are interested in finding out more about membership at Grace, please contact Pastor Mike at Mike@gracedm.org, We worship together in many ways: Standing, sitting, singing, speaking, listening. You are invited to worship in as many (or few) ways as you are comfortable and able. When following along in the bulletin, the congregation is invited to read the items in bold (often marked with a C:) aloud. Here at Grace we worship in two alternating styles, organ-led liturgy or piano-led liturgy. The style for today, as well as which liturgical setting is used, is listed on the front cover of your bulletin. Large print bulletins are available from the ushers. Please sign the Attendance Registration sheets which are found in each pew. Children belong and are welcome in worship! Children s bulletins are available from the ushers, and activity bags are available outside the doors to the sanctuary. Communion We welcome all people to the Lord s table to receive Holy Communion. Children ages 3 and above are welcome at the parents discretion, after meeting for instruction with the pastor. Children not instructed are invited to come forward for a blessing. If you are not able to come forward to take communion, please notify an usher before the service. Then try to sit by the aisle and the pastor will commune you in your pew. 2
Prelude Partita on God, Who Stretched the Spangled Heavens Anne K. Organ Welcome Please stand as you are able Confession and Forgiveness P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, the one who fashions us, the one who heals us, the one who reforms us again and again. C: Amen. P: Let us confess our sin, calling for God's transforming power. Pause for silence and reflection. P: Source of all life, C: we confess that we have not allowed your grace to set us free. We fear that we are not good enough. We hear your word of love freely given to us, yet we expect others to earn it. We turn the church inward, rather than moving it outward. Forgive us. Stir us. Reform us to be a church powered by love, willing to speak for what is right, act for what is just, and seek the healing of your whole creation. Amen. P: In the mercy of almighty God... the name of the Father, and of the +Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Gathering Hymn We Come to You For Healing, Lord #617 Please be seated Centering Ourselves in Prayer Please stand as you are able Greeting P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. Kyrie Opening Hymn We are a singing church, so we follow the advice of the apostle Paul to teach and admonish one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord (Colossians 3:16). Kyrie In Mark 10 we hear of Jesus journey through Jericho to Jerusalem where he encounters 3
Bartimaeus, a blind man, who hears this is Jesus and shouts, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me. From that time to the present, Jesus followers have prayed that same prayer to God: Kyrie Eleison ( Lord, have mercy ). We are totally dependent upon God, so we pray for mercy in every aspect of life. 4
Canticle of Praise P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. Prayer of the Day P: Let us pray, 5
C: Gracious God, throughout the ages you transform sickness into health and death into life. Open us to the power of your presence, and make us a people ready to proclaim your promises to the whole world, through Jesus Christ, our healer and Lord. Amen. Reading Notes Faithful Christians do not show partiality to the rich and powerful of the world, especially at the expense of the poor and weak. Likewise, faith does not pay mere lipservice to God s will. Instead, a living Christian faith expresses itself in acts of compassion and mercy for those in need. 6 Presentation of Bibles Kindergarten: Alton Calahan, Jack Chenoweth, Joviana Reyes, & Levi Wilner Third Grade: Finnegan Holst, Piper Hutton, & Zara Preston Sixth Grade: Catherine Lewis Please be seated Reading James 2: My brothers and sisters, do you with your acts of favoritism really believe in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ? 2 For if a person with gold rings and in fine clothes comes into your assembly, and if a poor person in dirty clothes also comes in, 3 and if you take notice of the one wearing the fine clothes and say, Have a seat here, please, while to the one who is poor you say, Stand there, or, Sit at my feet, 4 have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? 5 Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters. Has not God chosen the poor in the world to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him? 6 But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who oppress you? Is it not they who drag you into court? 7 Is it not they who blaspheme the excellent name that was invoked over you? 8 You do well if you really fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 9 But if you show partiality, you commit sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. 11 For the one who said, You shall not commit adultery, also said, You shall not murder. Now if you do not commit adultery but if you murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. 12 So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty. 13 For judgment will be without mercy to anyone who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment. 14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill, and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? 17 So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. L: The Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God
Psalm Hallelujah! Praise the Lord, O my soul! 2 I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. 3 Put not your trust in rulers, in mortals in whom there is no help. 4 When they breathe their last, they return to earth, and in that day their thoughts perish. 5 Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help, whose hope is in the Lord their God; 6 who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them; who keeps promises forever; 7 who gives justice to those who are oppressed, and food to those who hunger. The Lord sets the captive free. 8 The Lord opens the eyes of the blind; the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous. 9 The Lord cares for the stranger; the Lord sustains the orphan and widow, but frustrates the way of the wicked. 10 The Lord shall reign forever, your God, O Zion, throughout all generations. Hallelujah! Please stand as you are able Gospel Acclamation Gospel Acclamation P:The Holy Gospel according to Saint Mark the Seventh Chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. Gospel Mark 7: [Jesus] set out and went away to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know he was there. Yet he could not escape notice, 25 but a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him, and she came and bowed down at his feet. 26 Now the woman was a Gentile, of Syrophoenician origin. She begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27 He said to her, Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children s food and throw it to the dogs. 28 But she answered him, Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children s crumbs. 29 Then he said to her, 7 Gospel The Gospel Lesson is a selection from the accounts of the life of our Lord recorded by the four evangelists, St. Matthew, St. Mark, St. Luke, and St. John. Because Christ is with us in the Gospel reading, we stand to honor his presence. We also sing short verses before and after the reading of the Gospel. Gospel Notes In Mark s gospel, encounters with
women usually signify turning points in Jesus ministry. Here, a conversation with a Syrophoenician woman marks the beginning of his mission to the Gentiles. For saying that, you may go the demon has left your daughter. 30So she went home, found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone. 31 Then he returned from the region of Tyre, and went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. 32 They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hand on him. 33He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue. 34Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. 35And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. 36Then Jesus ordered them to tell no one; but the more he ordered them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. 37They were astounded beyond measure, saying, He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak. P: The Gospel of the Lord C: Praise to you, O Christ Please be seated Sermon Satisfied Please stand as you are able Hymn of the Day God, When Human Bonds Are Broken Creed The Creed is our response to God's speaking to us. Martyrs and saints have been confessing this creed since 325 A.D. The word "creed" comes from the Latin "credo" which means, "I believe!" 8 Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. #603
Prayers of the People P: Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: Into your wide embrace, gracious God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your boundless mercy through Jesus Christ, our Redeemer. C: Amen. All: God of love, have mercy on us. Pour out your Spirit upon us. Center us in worship. Hold us in grace. Strengthen us in love. Send us forth in mission. In Jesus holy name. Amen. Passing of the Peace P: The peace of the Lord be with you all, C: And also with you! Please be seated Announcements The Offering Offertory I Need Thee Every Hour Jeff Bennett Prayers of the People This prayer in the service follows the directive of the Apostle Paul to young Timothy, a pastor: I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone for Kings and all those in authority, that we may live in peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. Please stand as you are able Offering Prayer P: God of life, you give us these gifts of the earth, these resources of our life and our labor. Take them, offered in great thanksgiving, and use them to set a table that will heal the whole creation; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Light. C: Amen Great Thanksgiving 9
Preface Holy, Holy, Holy Thanksgiving at the Table P: In the night in which he was betrayed P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray. Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen Invitation to Communion P: Speak to us, O Lord, in the breaking of the bread, and make us one with you. Please be seated 10
Lamb of God Distribution Hymns 472(3x), 471, 496, 518 Please stand as you are able Prayer after Communion P: Holy and compassionate God, in bread and wine you give us gifts that form us to be humble and courageous. May your words come to life in our serving and in our witness, that we might speak a living voice of healing and justice to all the world, through Jesus Christ, our rock and our redeemer. C: Amen Blessing P: The Lord bless you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Sending Hymn Oh, For a Thousand Tongues to Sing #886 Dismissal P: Go in peace. Sound the good news. C: Thanks be to God. Postlude Praise to the Lord, The Almighty John Carter We will receive by intinction this morning: Receive the host (wafer).
