1 7 NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2016 ISSUE 36 From the Rector The Church is about worship, but it is also about getting to know God and his claims on our lives. With this in mind, we will shortly be holding an Alpha Course in the parish. Alpha has been a very widely successful faith development course with a particular appeal to those who have not had a great deal of involvement in Church life. Alpha began in Holy Trinity Church Brompton in London in the early 1980s and within a number of years evolved into a specialised ministry under the leadership of Rev Nicky Gumbel. Alpha has developed an ecumenical life of its own, while retaining its Anglican roots, and has been taken up by virtually every mainstream Christian tradition in these islands and the English-speaking world. We have invited our brothers and sisters in the Roman Catholic and Presbyterian traditions to join us, both in arrangements and in joining in the course which will be held on Tuesday evenings in the Parish Centre from 7.30pm. This is fully in keeping with the spirit of Anglican generosity which has been a feature of Anglicanism for over 400 years! Alpha is about developing the Christian faith, not about defining our Christian thinking over against those who differ from us in detail but share a common faith. Our organising team is led by David and Evelyn Hamilton who live in Portmarnock and are members of Donabate Presbyterian congregation and trained Alpha leaders. It also has members of the parish and of St Sylvester's and has the backing of the leadership of all the churches in our area. I invite you all to come along and join in in a process which will enrich us all in our relationship with God and develop our spirituality, faith and purpose as Christians living in a society which needs to hear God's message in Jesus of faith and trust and love. Yours, Norman Parish Finances-----A Mid-year Update At the end of June, having completed the first 6 months of 2016, it is a good time to review how our parish is progressing financially against the plan set by the Select Vestry at the start of the year. The good news is that overall the parish has realised a small deficit (total expenditure incurred less income received) of 3k compared to a planned shortfall of 5k. Looking into more detail behind the figures shows that the income is running at 6.5 k approx. below plan, with main shortfalls under the headings of Direct Giving (Envelope Contributions) and Plate Collections. Other areas of income are typically better than plan, thereby minimising the total shortfall. Expenditure for the first 6 months is running lower than planned by 8.5k, as a result of careful cost control in all areas as well as minimising expenditure on any non-essential items. On behalf of the Select Vestry, I would like to thank all parishioners for their valued and generous contributions to date and I look forward to your continuing support during the 2nd half of the year. 2 Parish Registers Holy Baptism. 24th July, in St Andrew's; Luke Daniel Collins, son of John & Debbie Collins, 1 Lime Kiln, Carrickhill Road Upper, Portmarnock 14th August, in St Andrew's, Eimear Darcey Hardy, daughter of Stephen and Laura Hardy, 26 Castleway, Kinsealy Lane, Malahide Holy Matrimony 5th August, in St Andrew's Kieran Hunt and Elizabeth Appleton, both of 27 Lakeside Road, Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. Kieran, grandson of Deryk and Isobel Morris, returned to the church he was baptised in for his wedding. We wish Kieran and Elizabeth a long and happy married life together as they return to Canada, following a couple of years spent working in England. Christian Burial 13th July, in St Andrew's Churchyard, Sinead Mary de Barra, 10 Notburgastrasse, Munchen, Germany. Sinead de Barra died in Germany after a long illness and her ashes were interred in the family grave at St Andrew's. We offer our sympathy to her mother, Maeve (Gaybrook) her fiancé Holger (Munich), her sister, Niamh (Kinsealy) and her family in their sad and untimely loss. Sympathy We express our sympathy to Tim Shattock, Castleview Park, on the recent death of his mother. Congratulations to Suzanne Fleury, formerly of St Andrew's Grove, on her engagement to Nicolas Hantsch of Hanover. Farewell John and Debbie Collins, and Luke, have had to return to England for work reasons. In the past five years, they have been a great asset to us, being involved with Children's Church and with SAPA, and with worship in St Andrew's. We hope that they will soon be able to re-adjust to life back across the Irish Sea in the West Midlands. Service Titles At the Reformation, the title used for the Main Service was the 'Mass'. This is still the title used in the Roman Catholic tradition, and also by German Lutherans: strangely in German even when the service is not a celebration of Holy Communion. Mass comes from the last words of the service, at the dismissal and means 'sent': perhaps it stuck in the memory as a sign that the congregation were about to be allowed go home! To the Orthodox, it is the 'Liturgy', which comes from the Greek for 'work', reminding us in all traditions that the celebration of the sacrament on the instruction of Jesus and indeed being in a very real way his 'last will and testament' is the public purpose of worship. At the Reformation, a number of names were used: Mass appearing in the 1549 Prayer Book along with Holy Communion, and the Lord's Supper. Holy Communion stressed the presence of the Lord and was not favoured by Puritans, who preferred the Lord's Supper as it stressed obedient remembrance rather than a real or spiritual presence. A modern term which has found favour across the Catholic traditions is 'Eucharist', coming from the Greek for 'Thanksgiving'. It appeals to Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican and Orthodox alike and avoids the 'party' connotations attached to traditional titles. I have recently being using it as a description of celebrations, leaving the term 'Communion' to signify our act of communicating in the sacrament in faith in obedience to Christ, whether we believe in his 'real' presence, his 'spiritual' presence or stress our obedience. All will be agreed we gather in thanksgiving for all God has done in Jesus for us through his death and resurrection. There is another great worship tradition in Anglicanism. One of the features of the late medieval Church was the abuses in the manner of celebration, and the undignified treatment of the bread and wine. A new form of worship was needed to embrace the new stress on preaching the word. Other reformed Churches such as the Calvinist moved towards simple preaching and singing and as people had only been communicating about once a year, infrequent communion continued. Archbishop Cranmer took a different path, and used as his base a pattern of seven 'hours', or daily prayer services which were compulsory for clergy and often followed by pious laity. They were consolidated in two, Morning Prayer' and 'Evening Prayer' with the intention of being used daily in churches and also preceding the Communion on a Sunday. Sadly this was not a great success, folk unused to communicating failed to do so, and the Offices on their own became the Sunday norm by default until the Eucharist was revived in the 19th century thanks to the Oxford Movement which sought to stress through worship that Anglicanism was a valid part of the historic Catholic Church. Morning Prayer is sometimes referred to as Matins: this can be a conceit, but if fact refers to its use on weekdays and without a penitential element: Matins was the first service of the medieval day. Evening Prayer is often known as Evensong, a title which arose because from the 17th century it was often sung, especially in the Cathedrals. Many composers wrote elaborate settings for it, just as their contemporaries on the Continent composed settings for the Mass. Friends of St Doulagh's For the first time, St. Doulagh s will be hosting an event in Culture Night on Friday 16th September from 5.00pm until 10.00pm. There will be Music, Tours and Talks. Admission is free, but donations towards our Restoration Fund Appeal will be welcome. Since this appeal was launched in May, we are approaching 14,000 from our target of 300,000, and we have not yet really got under way! Tickets for our concert 'On The Beat' featuring the Garda Ladies Choir & the Garda Band in Christ Church Cathedral on Tuesday 15th November will bring us all back to the '60s right through to the '00s are now on 20 each and are already starting to sell, so we look forward to a packed Cathedral, and the support of Friends, and members of all the Parishes in the Diocese and further afield. We are also selling slates at 5 each, and the first of what is hoped to be many Car Boot sales will be held on 8th October. Watch this space for further fundraising events to come! Mums in Prayer Some of you may have heard Natalie Hand from Donabate speak about "Mums in Prayer" at the All Age Service back in June. We would like to invite anyone who is interested in joining us to pray for our children to meet in St. Marnock's Chapel in St Andrew's on Friday mornings at beginning from 2nd September. Harvest Assistance The season for harvest thanksgiving is upon us again! While we are an urban parish, we are still dependent on the bounty of the earth and the sea for our food and this is the time to give thanks Continued on page 3 2

3 Parish Notes Continued from page 2 to God in a very special way for all his blessings. Last year, a collection was made at the service for charitable donations in the name of the parish, and we will be doing so again for organisations in the sphere of mission and development. We all have much to thank God for, and I trust that we will all be generous in our response. Many charities and good causes approach us each year for donations. They are worthy of our support and we would like to be able to respond more generously to what are nearly always worthy purposes. Harvest Services The Harvest celebrations will be held in St Andrew's on 25th September when the preacher at a Family Service will be Canon Ken Rue, Honorary Canon of Shyogwe Cathedral in Rwanda, and Non-Stipendiary Priest in Killiskey Parish (aka Ashford and Nun's Cross!) Ken is also very closely associated with the Girls' Brigade. For many years, the School has played a part in this service and we look forward to the continuance of this tradition. Harvest reminds us of our dependence on good weather and hard human work, and this is very important to remember at a time when food production has become both industrialised and globalised, not always to our advantage or long-term good. Two weeks later, on Sunday 9th October there will be our Harvest Celebrations in St Doulagh's. There will be two services: the first is a celebration of the Eucharist at am when the preacher is Canon George Irwin. George and the Rector were contemporaries in the old Divinity Hostel, and were both student readers in St George's. He was also the Rector's best man! George's ministry was spent in Connor Diocese and he has just retired as Rector of St Mark's Ballymacash in Lisburn. At 7.00pm that evening, a Harvest Evensong will be held at which the preacher is Ven Robin Bantry-White, formerly Archdeacon of Cork and now Assistant Priest in Carlow. Robin and the Rector have known each other for fifty years in a common pursuit of both railways and historical studies in TCD. This service has an ecumenical dimension in that we extend invitations to the members of the other Churches in the area, and St Doulagh's, always beautifully decorated for the occasion, takes on a special beauty of spiritual warmth and physical cosiness in the dark. Assistance in decoration of both churches is always welcome. St Andrew's will be decorated on the Saturday morning, and St Doulagh's on the Friday morning. Gifts of fruit and vegetables will be most welcome, even if you feel your arranging skills are not up to public display! Substitute Duty From 26th Sept to 8th October, in case of pastoral emergency, please contact Rev Kevin Brew ( ) Rev Willie Black The preacher on Sunday 2nd October will be Rev Willie Black. Willie is Dublin Port Chaplain of the Ministry to Seafarers, and was formerly Rector of Drumcondra: in the 1980s he spent some time as Non-Stipendiary Priest in Malahide Group under Canon Cooper, and is well known to many of us, especially as his two brothers, Victor and Patrick, are parishioners here. Confirmation Classes The Archbishop will be visiting the Rural Deanery on April 29th or 30th to administer Confirmation, and classes for younger members will begin on 9th October when prospective Candidates and their parents are asked to attend the 6.30pm service which will be followed by a meeting in St Marnock's chapel. NB all candidates must be 14 years of age by the date of confirmation. Classes will be held on Sunday evenings at 6.30pm. There will also be classes for adults who have not been confirmed and details will be made available nearer the time. Memorial Service This is held each year in All Saints' Tide and we invite all those in the parish who have suffered bereavement in their families during the past year to come along as we remind ourselves of the Christian message of resurrection hope. This year, it will be held on Sunday October 30th at 7.00pm and will be followed by refreshments. Alexandra Crescent Alexandra Crescent is a sheltered housing development for the elderly at the rere of St Patrick's Nursing Home, Dublin St, Baldoyle. Opened recently, it has been built by Cowper Care, owned by the diocese. It consists of 13 bungalows, and shares the facilities of the nursing home. The parish was represented at the opening by the Rector and Hazel Bolton. Any parishioners interested in the facility should contact Cowper Care. It helps to fill a gap in provision in North Dublin. The name comes from the former residential home in Harold's Cross, Alexandra Guild House, and was in part financed from its sale. Diocesan 800 The present diocese was formed out of the two dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough in Dublin was the area of the Scandinavian Kingdom of Dublin, Glendalough the surrounding area under Gaelic influence. The 800th anniversary is currently being celebrated, and the following prayer has been written for the occasion: Almighty God, you called your people in ancient times to minister in word and deed, to nurture the faith delivered to them and to go into all the world in witness and in mission. We ask your blessing and guidance on The United Dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough as we mark eight hundred years of unity. We wish them well in the future and pray they find a new community church. We need more helpers! If you are interested please contact me. On the 28th August we had an open house after church. We would like to thank everyone for coming. Katy and I are blessed to be serving the people and community of Malahide. Blessings, Jamie Heffelfinger Parish Youth Worker jkheffelfinger@hotmail.com Reeling through the Select Vestry Minutes 21/10/1957 St. Doulagh s Bell The Rector stated that Mr and Mrs Symes had been kind enough to offer a bell to be hung in the tower of St. Doulagh s Church. He had inspected the bell which was of good tone in the company of the Contractor who was of the opinion that there would be no difficulty in removing the bell from its present site and hanging it in St Doulagh s Church. Mr Rumball felt that it was imperative that the present appearance of the Church should not be altered and Capt. Butler said that there were clear indications that a bell had once hung in the tower. The Rector said that while it was necessary that provision be made for the sound of the bell to emanate from the tower this could be done without interfering with the appearance of the structure. Capt Butler proposed Mr Manning seconded and it was agreed that Mr and Mrs Symes offer be gratefully accepted 4

5 Parish Notes Continued from page 3 God the Spirit in the love of our neighbour as ourselves. This we ask in humble gratitude to you for the lives of the saints of past, present and future who inspire us to know that the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace. All of this we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Irish Cancer Society The Irish Cancer Society s Volunteer Driver Service is in need of volunteer drivers to drive local patients to and from their chemotherapy treatments in our partner Dublin hospitals (St. James s; The Mater; Tallaght & St. Vincent s). Driver expenses are paid. Telephone Rebecca on or transport@irishcancer.ie There are many local patients who can t get to their treatments for a number of reasons; 1. Patients are living on their own with little or no immediate family support 2. The patients family is not in the immediate vicinity 3. The patients family cannot take time off work to bring them to and from the hospital (when the recession really hit, people became afraid of taking time off work) 4. Patients are elderly and cannot drive (and their spouse cannot drive) 5. The treatment is too aggressive and the patient has been advised not to drive So a service like this one is really needed so any assistance you can give us, is most welcome. If you need any further information, please let me know.
