1 Dominican International School RELIGIOUS STUDIES 9 COURSE SYLLABUS GRADE LEVEL: 9 SCHOOL YEAR: TEACHER: MR. JOHN ERICK S. MOJE jmoje@dishs.tp.edu.tw COURSE DESCRIPTION: Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. Luke 24:27 The Religious Studies course for grade nine students are anchored on the three Pillars of the Campus Ministry Department namely: Word for Doctrine, Witness for the valuing and application of the concept learned, and Worship for the celebration of faith. The harmony of these three pillars will help to ensure wholistic formation of the students. This course will commence with the Basic understanding about Philosophy to dig deeper about the richness of the philosophical origin and its impact to our civilization then and now. This will lead the students to understand easier the concept about God. In this course, students are expected to increase their knowledge of the meaning of the Old Testament and deepen their understanding of its value by studying the following: Old Testament literary characteristics, geographical and historical background of the Old Testament, the authority of the Scriptures and the enduring significance of the Old Testament. This will also increase student s knowledge of the composition and meaning of the Pentateuch by studying the literary forms and elements, traditions and groups of writers, prehistoric period, and distinction between a literal reading

2 and a reading for religious truth. Furthermore, students will also increase their knowledge of the meaning of the Old Testament and deepen understanding of its value by discovering the literary characteristics, Laws, codes, and ways of life as they influenced the patriarchal stories, and the ancestral history of God s people. Meanwhile, students will also explore the literary aspects of Joshua, judges, and Ruth, Israelites conquest and settlement of Canaan, concepts of holy war and cold war, and the value of conflictresolution. Students will also shed lights about the Divided Kingdom and the role of the prophets. Indeed, the fulfillment of God s promise in the Old Testament is realized in the New Testament. Weekly Reflection about the Word of God will also help the students develop interior silence in response to the challenges of present time. The Word will be an invitation for them to live with faith, hope, and love in their hearts. 5 50 % Deportment (Behavior) - Truthful.20 points - Organized..20 points - Reflective...20 points - Courageous...20 points - Helpful..20 points TOTAL 100 points Note: The highest possible grade students can get every quarter in Deportment 95 points the way it was designed using the current grading system. The Project D (Detention) affects the Deportment Grade of students. SOME OF THE TEACHING STRATEGIES/APPROACHES APPLIED TO FACILITATE EFFECTIVE TEACHING-LEARNING PROCESS OF THE SUBJECT WORD: Dominicans are TRUTHFUL! Faith Book: This is used to write student s reflection about Sunday Gospel or Bible story; This can be done individually, by partners, or by group; Big and small group discussion and report; Movie Viewing: Bible Stories or documentaries related to the lessons; Seatwork and Chapter Review from the Textbook; Announced or surprised Quiz; WITNESS: Dominicans are ORGANIZED, HELPFUL, and COURAGEOUS! Group Dynamics Activities: These are used to intensify the value of collaboration and unity within the group; Dramatization/ Bibliodrama, Role playing, photography (Capturing God s message into picture), creativity in painting and coloring; The PETA varies accordingly; WORSHIP: Dominicans are REFLECTIVE! Prayer is an essential part of the subject because it gives students a chance to communicate with God joyfully;

6 Holy Mass is the highest form of worshipping God. Reflection/deepening about the Mass is followed during the class; Prayer Composition: This gives students a chance to compose or to write personal prayer. Different ways of prayer will also be introduced to the students; Meditation also helps students develop concentration and appreciate silence; PRIMARY TEXTBOOK & OTHER RESOURCES 1. Sophie s World: The History of Philosophy Online References: Bible Stories about Jesus (New Testament) and other Bible stories from the Old Testament; ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: - Students are REQUIRED to have Religious Studies notebook. It will serve as one major requirements of the subject per quarter; - The FB or Google Classroom code will be given to students during RS Class; - There will be NO Homework to be given during weekend except during major exams or quizzes; It is to give them a chance to spend quality time with their family;
