Trinity and Gillygooley trio bound for Kenya Adam and Johnny Moore from Trinity, and Adam Stevenson from Gillygooley will be travelling to Kenya this July as part of a team of eighteen volunteers participating in a Jengana project in Nairobi. Jengana is a Christian charity based in Northern Ireland and Nairobi and work with partner organisations to help some of the poorest people in Kenya. They have recently acquired a plot of land and are developing this to incorporate a school, living accommodation, centre and urban farm. There will be lots for the team to do, working on the site, visiting Jengana projects in Nairobi and helping out with school and home visits. All three are really looking forward to their trip and to the experiences and challenges that await them in Kenya. In the run-up to July they will be very busy with preparations and with fundraising for the work of Jengana. All funds raised and money donated goes directly to the projects in Kenya. This Quiz realised over 100 for GB funds and to buy prizes for the display evening. The Annual Display was held on the 27th March in Trinity Hall at 7.OO pm. Reverend Jane Nelson from 1st Omagh was the Inspecting Officer for the occasion. The girls were well turned out and performed short sketches, dancing and singing items. The awards were presented to the girls by Rev. Jane Nelson and Isla McGonigle gave a bouquet of flowers to her at the end of the presentation. Lieutenant Jolene Bell gave the retiring Captain Mavis Jardine a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the Company. Supper was served by the parents to everyone at the display. Manse Hedge gets a "Spring Clip" A beech hedge has been planted around part of the perimeter boundary of the Manse and on the morning of St Patrick's Day, Robert McCay, Mitchell McKnight and Greg Parke gave the hedge a "Spring Clip" before the onset of summer growth.the hedge is maturing well, apart from a small section which has been restricted due to lack of drainage. It is hoped that a new drain will be laid in the near future which will resolve this problem. The photographs show Robert McCay and Mitchell McKnight beside the hedge before and after its "clip". For our end of year trips the juniors went to Jonny Rockos in Irvinestown, were they had the choice of bowling or the soft play area, this was enjoyed by all. The seniors went to Campsie Go Karting, and all had a really great time. As usual all members were really well behaved and were a credit to the club. Enrolment will take place again in early September. For further information Contact Alison Hemphill or Sharon McFarland. Pictured left: Members of Senior Club at Campsie Go Karting.

Nicola Hemphill. ULSTER PROJECT Nicola Hemphill has been lucky enough to be chosen for the Ulster Project this year, she is a pupil at Omagh Academy and a member of Gillygooley Presbyterian Church. Nicola is travelling to Salt Lake City on the 25th June and will return home on 27th July which she is really looking forward to. On Tuesday 25th two members of Gillygooley Congregation Andrew and Jack Stevenson are heading for the USA for 4 weeks Andrew as a leader to the Lake Charles Group and Jack as a participant in the Salt Lake City Group. Both boys will be hosted by local families in America and will live and integrate themselves into daily American lives while they are there. They are both very excited to have been picked to participate in the Ulster Project and are counting the days to they leave in June. The cross community groups travelling to USA are each made up of 6 girls and 6 boys with 1 female and 1 male leader in charge of each group. They take part in all sorts of activites like river trips, swim parties, visiting amusement parks and water parks as well as attending church with their families and other group members and helping out with volunteering in local community projects. The Teens find out more about the families that they will be staying with and will start to communicate and correspond with them so as to get to know them a little better before they go. In the meantime they are preparing a scrap book which details their lives here in Northern Ireland and their interests and activities which they will present as a gift to their host family when they arrive. They are also working hard as groups to secure funding through fundraising for the project. There will be a L R Jack and Andrew Stevenson. period of adjustment for everyone when they go to USA as they adapt to the change of climate, time change, diet and the fact that long winter woolies will be replaced by shorts and sunscreen and that mobile phones are not allowed on the trip so as to help the teens better integrate with their host families and the planned activities. ANDREW TO STEP DOWN AS TRINITY & GILLYGOOLEY NEWS EDITOR (CONTRIBUTED) Andrew Scott, editor of Gillygooleys contributions to the Trinity and Gillygooley News has announced that he will step down after 20 years at the helm of the publication. Launched in 1992, the news sheet was originally designed for Trinity church members with no contributions from the Gillygooley congregation. But with such a vibrant community base, Andrew decided that Gillygooley should also be included and has been dedicated to producing innovative, interesting and informative articles covering stories and features about our congregation and the extended Gillygooley family. Engaging his readers Andrew has conducted interviews over the last 20 years speaking to family and friends of those with Gillygooley connections from as far away as Australia, Canada, Caribbean and New Zealand. Sticking closer to home he has also ensured that the Trinity and Gillygooley congregations are fully up to speed on all church matters and missions as well as activities in the locality including Flower arranging, barbeques, bus trips, fashion shows, penalty kick offs, parties, Harvest activities, radio Ulster interviews, young enterprise successes, tourist visits and many, many more. He established the Children s Corner page as well as Youth in focus and Where are they now and has covered key local news including the refurbishment of Gillygooley Presbyterian Church and Gillygooley Orange Hall as well as the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II, the visit of Moderator, Right Rev. David Clarke and the 200 th anniversary milestone of our small rural church. He will be handing over to Diane Mills who has helped him in a subbing capacity over the last number of years. Photo: Diane & Andrew busy getting the next edition together. So as Andrew steps down as joint editor of Trinity and Gillygooley News we thank him for all his contributions and for all his hard work and dedication in keeping us up to speed on news of interest to our congregations and for the history of church life contained within its volumes.

Green fingered Clive takes on new role Clive Porter is to use his green fingered skills and will take over responsibility for Gillygooley Church and Gillygooley Community Gardens. Initially established in 2007 the garden was set up as part of the renovations to the church and was extended in 2010 through a joint project with Gillygooley Youth and Community Development Association and funded by Airtricity. The garden was designed and implemented by a team of Gillygooley volunteers and led by Andrew Scott and Fred Chambers with Andrew taking responsibility for maintenance. He will now hand the role over to Clive Porter in the Spring of Pictured outside Gillygooley Presbyterian Church at the community garden, Andrew Scott and Clive Porter. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS AT 2 ND YOUTH Special birthdays seldom go unnoticed at Gillygooley 2 nd Youth. We depend on members conveying the secret to the press officer or chairperson. Special emphasis is always made on birthdays ending with a Zero. A youthful Ethel Caldwell celebrates her 80 th Birthday in the company of Violet Crosbie and Iris Moffitt Scott. Club Secretary Violet Crosbie celebrates a special birthday, (sure she still looks only 40!). John Hall Vice Chairman and Iris Moffitt Scott Chairperson paid her a surprise visit. 10 Out and About with Gillygooley 2nd Youth (50+ Club) Gillygooley 2nd Youth continued their winter programme of activities with great enthusiasm with an average attendance of 40 plus members present each night. Michael Pollard on his second visit to the club once again received a very warm welcome as he reminisced on life of the railway locally and showed some excellent slides. To bring variety to our programme David Campbell from Newtownstewart gave a most interesting talk and demonstration of Bee Keeping and the difficulties encountered for their survival due to weather and environmental issues currently prevailing. For those with green fingers Claire Rodgers of Garden Creations provided a wealth of information on good gardening practice. In March thirty five members had a fun packed and competitive day ten pin bowling in Irvinestown followed by an evening meal in Manor House Hotel. The May meeting which is an out of centre night the club travels to visit the garden of Valerie Robinson, followed by supper in Newmills Parish Church Hall. Valerie Robinson is the daughter of Trinity member Ellen McConnell. We look forward to visiting Valerie s beautiful garden and trust the weather will be favourable. The club also sent representatives to the Northern Ireland Pensioners Parliament and participated and contributed to the topics debated. Members also attended the South West Age Partnership A.G.M. in Irvinestown and recently participated in armchair activities training in the Station Centre. The club hosted Lifford and Clonleigh senior citizens club for lunch followed by an afternoon of dance activities. A trip on Lough Erne on Saturday 29th June is also planned incorporating a visit to Belleek Pottery followed by an evening meal at the Killyhevlin Hotel Enniskillen. Audrey Clements and Thelma Harkness return to bus after some shopping. Iris Moffitt Scott chairperson congratulates Terry and Sheila Hudson on their 47th wedding anniversary celebrated that weekend. 11 Sunday School and Bible Class Project 2012/2013 During the year the children and young people of Trinity and Gillygooley have been collecting money for Uzima - The Youth and Sunday School Project of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland for 2012/2013. The Uzima Project will be supporting two initiatives in Kenya and one in Ireland. The first project is within primary schools among the Maasai people near the Ol Kinyiei area of Kenya. The schools in the area are very remote and have limited resources. The Project aims to provide funding for resources and a worker who will not only support the teachers as they help to educate the children, but to also provide spiritual support and education for the children. The second area in Kenya is to help to resource a Christian Girls Secondary school in Nanyuki. Girls generally do not get to go to secondary school in Kenya, often barely making it to the end of primary school, as they are forced to marry young and so education is no longer viable. The Project aims to help with resourcing a new secondary school for girls so that they get the opportunity to be educated to a higher level and have careers within Kenya. Life in its fullest... Ireland: The members of Drogheda Presbyterian Church have recently (June 2012) moved to a new building. One of the main reasons for the new building is that there was not enough space for the growing number of children and young people that are part of the church. The Project hopes to fund the equipment needed for the 5 Sunday school rooms, the crèche room and the cry room in the new church building. Jesus said: I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. (John10:10) The YAC Project will help to resource and support children and young people in both Ireland and Kenya. The project will help children to understand Uzima - life in all its fullness - that comes from knowing God and being part of God s people. Page 11

Presbyterian News in Brief, by Gillygooley Correspondent Moderator Designate The election of the Rev Rob Craig as incoming Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland is a boost for congregations in the North West. The overwhelming vote from presbyteries across Ireland 17 2 for the 58 year old minister of Kilfennan congregation on Foyle side vindicates an earlier decision to locate this year s Presbyterian General Assembly at the Millennium Centre in Londonderry on June 3 6 to coincide with the UK City of Culture there. A General Assembly the highest legislature in Irish Presbyterianism has not been held in Londonderry since 1933 and there is a great sense of anticipation by Presbyterian congregations in the Derry and Donegal Presbytery for this highly significant event. Presbyterianism has a very strong presence in the North West, encompassing more than 50 churches in Londonderry city, east Donegal and Strabane in north Tyrone and Mr. Craig s congregation at Kilfennan on the waterside area is vibrant with 350 families. Presbyterianism was cradled in the north west 400 years ago with movement of families from Scotland in the early Scottish plantation years of the 17th century and the uplifting Calvinist witness, together with the Anglican tradition centered on the historic and celebrated St Columb s Cathedral, was a very important spiritual ingredient during difficult periods like the famed siege of Londonderry. Through the 18th century, many thousands of Presbyterian families left Londonderry, Donegal and North Tyrone to begin a new life in America and some of their offspring became distinguished US luminaries as Presidents (James Knox Polk and James Buchanan), Vice Presidents (John C Calhoun), statesmen (Charles Thomson), politicians, churchmen, soldiers, academics and musicians. The Rev Francis Makemie from Ramelton in Co Donegal founded the mainstream Presbyterian USA denomination in the early 18th century, which today has an American coast to coast membership of 10 million. Another Donegal Presbyterian pastor, the Rev Francis Allison from Leck near Letterkenny, ministered in Philadephia to some of the signatories of the America Declaration of Independence in Magee College in Londonderry was until recently a training academy for Presbyterian ministers. The UK City of Culture celebrations in Londonderry this year is designed to embrace people of the two main religious traditions in Londonderry and the Presbyterian Church as the largest Protestant denomination in Northern Ireland is ensuring that its witness will be well to the fore. Gillygooley welcomes neighbouring minister Rev Jonathan Cowan from east Donegal was ordained and installed as the new minister of Mountjoy and Drumlegagh churches at a special service in Mountjoy Presbyterian Church on Friday 26th April. There has always been a close link between the neighbouring churches and the members of Gillygooley pray for the continuing development of God s work in our congregations in west Tyrone. Rev Cowan is married to Tara and the couple have two children, Tom and Alice. Members of Gillygooley were guests at the ordination and installation in a capacity congregation which was also relayed to the church hall. As the Rev Cowan and his family settle into their new home and take up their various responsibilities we wish them God s blessing as they turn a new chapter in their lives. Moderator launches appeal for Syria The Rt Rev Dr Roy Patton has launched an appeal in support of a relief programme assisting people living within Syria and refugees fleeing the conflict. The money raised through donations will be forwarded to Tearfund, Christian Aid and the Presbyterian Church s partner in Syria, The National Evangelical Synod of Syria and Lebanon. In anticipation of the generous response, the Church has immediately released 60,000 to these organisations. Giving details of the crisis the Moderator said; Over the past two years the civil war in Syria has claimed more than 60,000 lives. Since the beginning of 2013 there has been dramatic deterioration in the humanitarian situation with upwards of five million people in need of assistance in one form or another. More than 1 million Page 12

refugees have fled to neighbouring countries at a rate of eight thousand every day, two million are displaced due to the fighting, and a similar number trapped in their homes in Syria where the health system has collapsed, water supplies are disrupted and food is in short supply. News reports coming to the Presbyterian Church from its partners indicate that refugees are arriving wet, cold and traumatised at camps, desperately in need of blankets, warm clothing, cooking stoves, and health services with the tented accommodation offering little protection from the bitterly cold winter. While there are significant barriers to the delivery of assistance inside Syria and great need in the refugee camps, the most critical constraint is quite simply the lack of funds, adds Dr Patton. Any contributions will be received through retiring offerings on Sunday 21 and 28 April Those wishing to avail of the Gift Aid scheme are asked to put their contribution in an envelope, write the words Syria Appeal Gift Aid on the front, and include their name and Freewill Offering number, or may be sent to Church House if it is not convenient to contribute on these dates. 'Day by day and with each passing moment, strength I find to meet my trials here. Trusting in my father's wise bestowment, I've no cause for worry or for fear.' Harold MCCauley House Celebrates 20th Anniversary Sunday 10th February 2013 marked the 20th anniversary of the opening of Harold McCauley House and the occasion was marked with a special service in First Omagh Presbyterian Church. Various people who have been involved in the life of the home from its inception gave reflections on the care, spiritual support and comfort provided for the residents. Harold McCauley House has been awarded the Best of the Best residential facilities award in three consecutive years 2010, 2011, and Communion table theme Love and care makes a house a home. 14 WHERE ARE THEY NOW? In October 1970 I left 83 Claragh Road to go to the University of Newcastle upon Tyne to study Mechanical Engineering. That was really my second choice, as I had wanted to go to the University of Glasgow to study Veterinary Science, but I got a C grade rather than a B grade in my A level Chemistry examination and that wasn t good enough for me to be a vet! Both these choices of career seemed very natural to me, having been involved on the farm at Laught all my life, helping to look after the hill cows, milking the dairy cows, acting as my father s mechanical apprentice as he covered the countryside ploughing, baling hay, cutting corn (and occasionally chatting as well!). I think I had a very good training in all things agricultural; however I decided it wasn t for me. I guess when I left home to go to Newcastle I never really considered where the journey would take me in life; I haven t really moved that far in that after six years at Newcastle University (where I met and married my wife Jeanette as well as achieving a PhD degree) I started work as a Junior Project Engineer at Babcock and Wilcox in Renfrew, just outside Glasgow. Babcock design, manufacture, install and maintain the boilers which produce the steam ( from coal, oil or gas) to drive the turbines which produce electricity.so when you flick on your light switch or TV in all probability the electricity will have been produced by a boiler designed, installed and maintained by Babcock! Over the past thirty five years I have moved up through the organisation, and I am now the Managing Director of the Boiler unit in the UK. In the UK the company employs over 4,000 people. During that time there have been a few changes in the ownership of the company, and we are now part of the Doosan Group, one of South Korea s largest companies employing over 40,000 people worldwide (and if you are a golf fan and watch the Open Golf you will see the Doosan name prominently displayed as a sponsor!). I have been lucky enough in my career to have travelled on a regular basis to all parts of the globe..usa, Russia, China, Hong Kong, South Africa, Taiwan, most countries in Europe and all over the UK. Of course none of these places can hold a candle to Laught, Gillygooley and Northern Ireland..home is always home! Jeanette and I live in a small village called Houston in the Renfrewshire countryside, where we have been for the last thirty years. Jeanette was a teacher in the local primary school before she took early retirement a few years ago. Our children Rachel and Simon attended the local primary and secondary schools, before both going on to University. They both have PhD degrees (just like their father!) ; Rachel is a curator at the Bavarian National Museum in Munich, and Simon works as a geophysicist for a company based in South East London. We see them at home once or twice a year, and we all enjoy going as a family to the Christmas Carol service at Houston Kirk Church of Scotland but very similar services and approach to the Presbyterian church at home..but with a Scottish twang!. I enjoy all forms of sport.spectating now rather than participating after my adventures in my youth with the Omagh Academy rugby team..and am ( or rather was!) a keen supporter of Glasgow Rangers. Simon and I had a season ticket at Ibrox until last year; we have been lucky enough to see all the heroes such as Gascoigne, Laudrup, Gough and Mc Coist play in the flesh, and there has been some great European football nights as well. The team haven t got their troubles to seek at the moment, but in a few years time I m sure that they will be back at the top of the league! I also enjoy walking in the beautiful Scottish countryside.we are only twenty minutes from Loch Lomond.the scenery in some places is very similar to home. I don t get back to Northern Ireland as often as I would like, and it s a real pleasure to get home and see all the folks.there s always some new arrival or other celebration to be had in the King family!
