A $10 Donation Is Just a Text Away: Giving $10 to Hartford Seminary is now as easy as texting the word HARTSEM to the number That simple act is a concrete contribution to peace, as your gift will support interfaith dialogue and the training of religious leaders from many faiths in many settings. Click here for full details. FROM THE LIBRARY Library Hours During the Summer Session (June 2 28), evening hours will resume Mondays through Thursdays till 9pm. EVENTS AT THE HARTFORD SEMINARY Dr. Ingrid Mattson: The Earth Is a Home for You When: June 21st, 7:00pm Where: Hartford Seminary Meeting Room. Leading Muslim scholar Dr. Ingrid Mattson, who taught at Hartford Seminary from , will give a lecture titled The Earth is a Home for You. A summary: We live in an age of great displacement, due to political, environmental and economic instability and disparities. Many feel uprooted and distant from a place they consider their home as a result of forced migration; others move easily in search of economic opportunities, without ever grounding themselves deeply in the places they live. The tremendous movement of peoples in the 21st century has been a challenge to nationalism, an ideology that depends on subscribing to a mythical narrative of a unified people within a land. Multiculturalism has been attacked as a failed response to nationalism, on the grounds that it does not provide norms for common action and interests.
3 The doctrine of share values promoted by many policy makers in response to the perceived failure of multiculturalism is mostly presented in a jingoistic manner with little substance. The philosophical discourse of cosmopolitanism, in contrast, offers promise for peaceful coexistence and ethical living. Professor Mattson argues that cosmopolitanism finds deep resonance in the Qur an and early prophetic teachings which have often been marginalized by an imperial Islamic discourse. Further, Mattson argues that an Islamic ethics and practice that emphasizes connection with the earth and the rights of creation can provide cosmopolitanism with a means of engendering a feeling of rootedness and belonging that is necessary to stave off false ideologies of identity. The event is free, but registration is encouraged, click here. Celebration in Remembrance of Sister Mary Elizabeth Johnson When: June 28st, 2:00pm Where: Hartford Seminary Meeting Room. A ritual celebration will be held to remember the life of Sister Mary Elizabeth Johnson, who passed away on Thursday, May 8, not long after her 90th birthday. Prof. Miriam Therese Winter issued this invitation: Please join me on June 28th, 2:00 pm, on the deck of the Women s Center at 76 Sherman Street for a ritual celebration in remembrance of Mary Elizabeth Johnson, a Medical Mission Sister with whom I shared a mission and ministries for more than 46 years. Refreshments will follow. ME, as she was known to many, had a Master s in Religious Studies from the seminary and worked on the administrative staff for many years. The Medical Mission Sister spent 17 years of her career serving hospitals in Pakistan. Information here. Nurture: Stories of New Midlife Mothers When: Tuesday, June 1-July 31st Where: Hartford Seminary Meeting Room. The first and only art gallery show dedicated to presenting women choosing motherhood over 40 will be displayed at Hartford Seminary from June 1-July 31. The show, which also started at Hartford Seminary in 2010, has traveled to 12 venues
4 throughout Canada and the U.S. Featured in the show are dramatic black and white photos with accompanying narrative text features 25 women who have chosen motherhood over 40. The show was written and created by Cyma Shapiro. Photos were shot by Shana Sureck and Tracy Cianflone. LOCAL EVENTS Connecticut Council for Interreligious Understanding Annual Meeting When: June 19 6:45 9:00 p.m. Where: Asylum Hill Congregational Church Asylum Avenue, Hartford We're holding our Annual Meeting on Thursday evening, June 19th -- and we hope you can come. We'll talk a bit about the projects we've been working on this year -- in education, the arts, and the multi-religious / multi-cultural sharing of wisdom & ideals. We'll also share our thoughts about where we hope to venture next. But the most important part of our evening will be a vigorous & thoughtful discussion on "The State of Interreligious Understanding" -- at the global *and* the local level. Heidi Hadsell, Hartford Seminar president and CCIU board member, will share her experiences in dialogue, relationship-building & partnerships over this past year -- experiences accumulated through travel to destinations near & far. And all of us will engage in conversation about the challenges & rewards of interreligious understanding as we have experienced it -- likely on a much more local scale. RSVP to: CCIU co-chairs: Shyamala Raman (sraman@usj.edu) *or* Carol Fay (ccfnoank@yahoo.com) by June 16 th The Gay Christian Conundrum: Three Authors Discuss Their Journeys When: June 24 7 p.m. Where: The Mark Twain House The Mark Twain House & Museum and the Hartford Seminary have joined together to present this talk about the challenges of balancing faith and homosexuality. This talk will include three authors who have written books on the subject: Jeff Chu, author of Does Jesus Really Love Me?: A Gay Christian s Pilgrimage in Search of God; Justin Lee, author of Torn: Rescuing The Gospel From the Gays-vs.-Christian Debate, and Chris Stedman, author of Fathiest: How An Atheist Found Common Ground With The Religious.
5 All the authors personally struggled with the supposed dichotomy of their faith and being gay. Chu and Lee came to the conclusion that there was nothing mutually exclusive about the being a gay Christian, and embraced their faith. Stedman ended up personally rejecting religion, but seeks to dialogue with people of faith. Their books tell their life stories and about their investigations, and they will discuss the books and their own journeys at this Book/Mark event. For full information, click here.
